Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of Peruvian purple corn (Zea mays) administration in serum lipids levels reduction (hypolipidemic effect) in non hypertensive diabetic patients with dyslipidemia; to compare hypolipidemic effect of Peruvian purple corn and simvastatin. Objective: To establish the effect of fresh maca (Lepidum meyenil walp) on the sportsmen physical performance at high altitude. Design: Comparative, prospective, and experimental study. Materials and Methods: Ten high altitude sportsmen constituted the sample. We first measured the maximum oxygen consumption under physical activity. Then they received 1500 mg of fresh maca daily during 60 days and a second evaluation was performed under similar conditions. The maximum oxygen intake and performance were determined and subjects were monitored for a 30 days period. Dosage of transaminases ALAT, ASAT, and serum creatinine were done during each evaluation. OBJECTIVE: To demostrate that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) patients in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) phase associated with tuberculosis (TB) or cryptococcosis have hypomagnesemia-related inadequate treatment response. DESIGN: Prospective and longitudinal study. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We studied 300 subjects, divided in six groups of 50 patients each: positive HIV patients, TB patients, AIDS patients with TB, AIDS patients with cryptococcosis, no-AIDS patients with acute infections and a normal group (blood donors). RESULTS: Average magnesium values were below normal in the groups AIDS/TB, AIDS/cryptococcosis and TB. There were important statistical differences in magnesium levels in the groups HIV, AIDS/TB, AIDS/ cryptococcosis and TB. Objetivos: Evaluar el efecto hipolipemiante del aceite de sacha inchi. Diseño: Estudio experimental, doble ciego, con grupo control comparativo. Objective: To determine the frequency of cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) in obese menopausal and premenopausal women aged 30 to 75 from Metropolitan Lima, Peru. Methods: We conducted a descriptive, analytical, transversal study in 95 obese women aged 30 to 75 from Metropolitan Lima from 2015 to 2017, where 48 were menopausal (MENO) and 47, premenopausal (PREMENO). Obesity grade was determined using the World Health Organization criteria. Conventional methods were used for anthropometry, blood pressure (BP), fasting blood glucose (G), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, insulin (I) and transaminases values; VLDL, LDL and non-HDL (cNoHDL), and HOMA coefficient were calculated. Objectives: To compare the hypolipemic effect of Sacha Inchi/galactomannan´s emulsion (SIE) with Simvastatin (SVT) in diabetics type 2 (DM2) with dislipoproteinemia. Objectives: To determine the type of anemia most frequent in patients with AIDS and the various degrees of anemia. Material and methods: One hundred patients 18 to 60 year-old infected with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) with residence in Lima and Callao were studied from January to December 2001 for blood count bone marrow aspiration, serum iron, transferrin, ferritin, folate and vitamin B12 levels. Samples were evaluated at the “Dos de Mayo” Hospital Clinical Pathology Department. Results: From the 100 patients, 60% had severe, 30% moderate and 10% light anemia; 70% nutritional and 30% due to chronic disease. In the nutritional anemia group, 25% was ferropenic anemia, 30% ferropenic and megaloblastic (double defect) and 15% megaloblastic. We report 16 cases of Pemphigus foliaceus occurred at Ucayali, department of Peru. Most of them came from Coronel Portillo, Ucayali’s province (94%), and half of them from Campo Verde district. Eighty per cent belonged to rural areas, 56% were females and 7 children were affected (43%). All patients had generalized skin involvement without mucous membranes compromise. Nikolsky sign was present in 50%. In all cases skin biopsy showed subcorneal acantholysis and only 40% presented pemphigus positive immunofluorescence.

Introduction: In our context, there are no studies which had evaluated the markers of bone turnover in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, considering the high rate of morbidity and mortality associated with fragility fractures. Objective: To know the biochemical features of bone metabolism in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: A cross-sectional study. 49 women with postmenopausal osteoporosis were included. Bone mineral density in spine, hip and forearm was measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry. Calcium, phosphorus, osteocalcin, alkaline phosphatase, vitamin D and paratohormone were measured in blood. Background: Previous studies have shown oxidative stress in pemphigus vulgaris and pemphigus foliaceus, nevertheless, it remains unknown whether a similar response is characteristic of endemic pemphigus foliaceus in Peru. Objectives: To determine the oxidative stress response in endemic pemphigus foliaceus patients and subjects with positive for anti-desmoglein1 antibodies (anti-dsg1) from endemic areas of Peru. We report the case of a 31 year-old male from Cajamarca, Peru, with cognitive problems since childhood, who at 12 year-old developed increased volume and deformation of his right lower limb and to a lesser extent of his left, associated to massive skin folding, growth of subcutaneous nodules, elephantine look due to nerve cords formation in thigh and leg, pain and functional walking limitation. Objective. To evaluate the importance of bone biopsy in the diagnose of the bone metabolic diseases, its relationship with bone densitometry (BMD) and biomarkers. Methods. In a descriptive, transversal study, 38 biopsies of pelvic bone were made, 36 in female (34 postmenopausal and 2 premenopausal) and 2 in male. All had BMD in spine, hip and/or forearm measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry. El Pénfigo Foliáceo Endémico (PFE) es una enfermedad autoinmune de la piel endémica en áreas de la Amazonía. Se revisa el caso de una mujer de 36 años que presentó PFE en la semana 17 de embarazo. A las 29 semanas, comenzó un tratamiento antimicrobiano y esteroides. En el momento del parto la enfermedad en la madre ya había sido controlada con corticoterapia, mostrando inmunofluorescencia indirecta (IFI) para IgG total negativa. De esta manera no habría descarga de anticuerpos hacia la placenta, y la recién nacida también mostró títulos negativos. Durante el seguimiento la niña varió sus títulos de anticuerpos, de negativo a 1/20. Recientemente se demostró que 45% de familiares de pacientes con PFE presentan anticuerpos anti Dsg-1, siendo más frecuente en familiares de primer grado.
