Objectives: To determine the type of anemia most frequent in patients with AIDS and the various degrees of anemia. Material and methods: One hundred patients 18 to 60 year-old infected with human immune deficiency virus (HIV) with residence in Lima and Callao were studied from January to December 2001 for blood count bone marrow aspiration, serum iron, transferrin, ferritin, folate and vitamin B12 levels. Samples were evaluated at the “Dos de Mayo” Hospital Clinical Pathology Department. Results: From the 100 patients, 60% had severe, 30% moderate and 10% light anemia; 70% nutritional and 30% due to chronic disease. In the nutritional anemia group, 25% was ferropenic anemia, 30% ferropenic and megaloblastic (double defect) and 15% megaloblastic. Objetivos: Determinar la prevalencia de leucemias agudas, por inmunofenotipo. Diseño: Descriptivo transversal. Institución: Instituto de Investigaciones Clínicas, Facultad de Medicina, UNMSM, y Hospital Nacional Dos de Mayo (HNDM). Participantes: Pacientes con neoplasias hematológicas atendidos en el HNDM en el periodo 2011-julio 2012. Intervenciones: A todos los pacientes se realizó hemograma, mielograma, citometría de flujo (sangre medular). Principales medidas de resultados: Prevalencia de neoplasias hematológicas y leucemias agudas, características inmunofenotípicas. Resultados: Se encontró 80 neoplasias hematológicas: 42 (52,5%) leucemias agudas, 21(26,3%) mieloma múltiple, 8 (10%), linfomas, 5 (6,3%) síndromes mieloproliferativos crónicos, 4 (5%) mielodisplasias. Objectives: To determine the frequency of anemia-related dermatological abnormalities and severity. Materials and Methods: A sample of 100 subjects older than 18 years with a diagnosis of nutritional anemia who were admitted at 2 de Mayo Hospital between January and November, 2004 was studied. In each subject we measured total CBC and serum iron, ferritin, folate, and cobalamin levels. Results: The type of anemia was iron deficiency in 45%, mixed anemia (iron deficiency and megaloblastic anemia) in 35%, and megaloblastic anemia in 20%. Dermatological abnormalities were pallor (100%), atrophic glossitis (81%), angular cheilitis (60%), koilonychia (33%), tinyblue sclera (30%), thinning hair (29%), thinning nails (29%); 75% of the cases were determined as having severe anemia. Fourteen year-old male patient referred from Huancayo who presented one month gastric intolerance, jaundice, fever and a lymph proliferative syndrome. Laboratory tests revealed severe pancytopenia due to phagocytosis. Haematologic and anatomy-pathology diagnosis was human malignant histiocytosis. We present this case due to its low frequency and the emergency character of the disease.
