The study analyzes the speech of people from marginal urban areas of Lima for the meanings and their assessment of organizational processes and participation in their localities. Twenty two in-depth interviews were conducted in 3 settlements in the southern cone of Lima. The results show that family and community networks are valued as resources that can face the challenges of living in an environment perceived as precarious. The organization and community participation are important strategies to overcome their difficulties. Interviewees identify a number of weaknesses in the strategies, like the lack of recent positive experiences and the wear from over-use of these local resources to answer collective problems.

The migration of peoples to the capital has generated a break in the continuity and survival of their customs, their mother tongue. The latter is lost over time. In this case, it was investigated in the population of Shipibos, arriving from the Amazon to Lima, in which evidence was found that attempts to rescue part of that loss. In this article we analyze this intercultural phenomenon, in which, the Shipibo-Conibo in the new urban scene retain their ethnic identity, culture, customs; and its native language. Among the findings, we analyze the role of the Shipiba woman and the jungle school as a pillar for the conservation of that culture.

Public security refers to the state where individuals can live freely and safely, without fear of violence or crime, and where the government guarantees the protection of their rights. However, due to the failure of national-level public security strategies, there is a need to review approaches aimed at promoting public security and the perception of security in Peruvian cities. This has revealed a gap in the need for innovative proposals that take a community perspective on security. The research aimed to assess the use of community education as a means of enhancing public security in the southern districts of Metropolitan Lima. The study covered eleven districts, namely Chorrillos, San Juan de Miraflores, Villa María del Triunfo, Villa El Salvador, Lurín, Pachacamac, San Bartolo, Pucusana, Punta Hermosa, Punta Negra, and Santa María del Mar, which make up this area. The study follow...

Due to the food crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, community pots have made a comeback in Lima’s vulnerable areas, as an alternative mechanism to fight hunger. They have become a symbol of resilience and solidarity, as well as spaces where women can support each other and become empowered. In this context, community pots have captured the attention of the State, which has created policies aimed at supporting them. However, these public initiatives still present significant shortcomings.

This article examines the development of digital fabrication in Peru, focusing on Lima Makers, the country’s first maker space. Through this case, the study explores the dynamics of socialization, collaborative identity, and innovation practices in a context where digital fabrication intersects with local artistic and technological culture. Utilizing the concepts of recursive publics, communities of practice, and infrastructuring, the analysis shows how Lima Makers fosters cohesion among its members and encourages creativity, while also facing challenges in forming active recursive publics involved in the governance of digital fabrication in Peru. Furthermore, the article argues that this local dynamic reflects a process of cultural appropriation and the creation of new technological identities in the global south.

Populations that live in poverty with restricted social mobility and limited access to health care services, such as the Shipibo-Konibo community of Cantagallo (Rimac), are at risk to get COVID-19. After the report of three fatalities due to COVID-19 in that community a multidisciplinary team involving the ministries of health, interior affairs, culture and the major of the Rimac district, the community of that district and NGOs did not allow the movement of persons in and out the community. The proportion of members of the community with positive IgM serological tests come down and those with positive IgG levels increased, suggesting reduced transmission or presence of mild- asymptomatic cases. The vulnerability of indigenous communities as reported here is a clear evidence of the need to have sustainable and articulated plans to protect these communities from devastating diseases such ...

More than half of freshwater gastropods are in some category of conservation worldwide. Th e objective of this study was to evaluate the drastic decrease in the gastropod community of the Los Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge (RVSPV), Lima, Peru from 2005 to 2010. 8,640 gastropods were collected from eight sampling stations near the “Marvilla” lagoon of the RVSPV. Th e relative abundances by species, families, and study year were obtained. Th e population density of gastropods (ind·m-²) by families was analyzed and also they were grouped between native and exotic species. Th e effect of water quality, established by physicochemical factors, on the density of gastropods according to family and year of study was evaluated. Th e alpha diversity for the gastropod community covered the indices of S (Richness), H' (Shannon- Wiener), D (Simpson), and DMn (Menhinick) per year of study. Th ...
