Digestive diseases are the fourth leading cause of outpatient care in Peruvian healthcare centers, with gastritis and peptic ulcers being the most common. This is a retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study of secondary analysis of medical record data to evaluate the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori in patients undergoing upper digestive endoscopy during 2019 at Clinica Delgado, Lima, Peru. An association between males (PRa 1.27, 95% CI 1.10-1.48, p<0.001), age categories and upper digestive endoscopy (PRa 2.53, 95% CI 2.16-2.97, p<0.001) was reported. Based on these findings, it is recommended that other causes of gastritis be identified, especially in young women with deep chronic gastritis. Furthermore, we present a review of the scientific literature of Peru on factors associated with the positivity of Helicobacter pylori in the results of superior digestive endoscopy.

Objective: this study aimed to describe the main factors associated to mortality in a cohort of patients hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia in a public hospital in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: this was a retrospective cohort study, with a non-random convenience sampling. Adult patients with confirmed/suspicious SARS-CoV-2 pneumonia with rapid and/or molecular tests were included. Demographic, clinical, laboratory, tomographic and treatment variables were identified. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and Poisson regression techniques were used to determine the adjusted relative risk (aRR). Results: 122 patients were included, 70.5% were male, with a mean age of 55.8 years, with a history of obesity (25.4%) and high blood pressure (HBP, 13.1%). The multivariate analysis of clinical factors identified that age (aRR 1.03; 95% CI: 1,00-1.06; p=0.021), body mass index (BMI;...

Natural infection by Fasciola hepatica is recorded in a white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and a taruca (Hippocamelus antisensis), both from the department of Cusco. Animals were remitted to the Veterinary Institute (IVITA-Maranganí, FMV, UNMSM) by the authorities of the National Service of Flora and Fauna (SERFOR, Cusco Headquarters). Six trematodes were collected from the bile ducts during the necropsy of the animals, and they were preserved in 70% ethanol. Morphological analysis indicated that they correspond to F. hepatica. This was confirmed by analyzing of the mitochondrial DNA of the parasites by partially amplifying the cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1) and the NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (nad1) genes. Analysis of these genes had an identity greater than 99% compared to genes from GenBank. The present study demonstrates the occurrence of F. hepatica in these cervids...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the leading cause of congenital infection in developed countries, affecting 0.3 to 0.6% of all live births in Europe. Primary CMV infection occurs in 1 to 4% of seronegative women during pregnancy and may be transmitted to the fetus in 40% of cases. Up to 10% of intrauterine CMV infections result in symptomatic congenital disease at birth. Half of these children and 13% of those born with asymptomatic infection will develop long-term sequelae, especially neurosensory hearing loss and mental retardation. Accurate diagnosis of primary maternal and fetal infection is now possible using the avidity index of anti-CMV IgG and virological testing to detect the virus in amniotic fluid. The gold standard for diagnosis of congenital CMV infection is the detection of the virus in urine within the first 2 weeks of life by rapid cell culture techniques (shell vial) or nucleic...

Background: Tuberculosis has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including acute myocardial infarction (AMI). We investigated whether latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is associated with AMI. Methods: We conducted a case-control study in 2 large national public hospital networks in Lima, Peru, between July 2015 and March 2017. Case patients were patients with a first time diagnosis of type 1 (spontaneous) AMI. Controls were patients without a history of AMI. We excluded patients with known human immunodeficiency virus infection, tuberculosis disease, or prior LTBI treatment. We used the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube assay to identify LTBI. We used logistic regression modeling to estimate the odds ratio (OR) of LTBI in AMI case patients versus non-AMI controls. Results: We enrolled 105 AMI case patients and 110 non-AMI controls during the study period....

Infodemia is the information epidemy associated to fear, speculation and rumors, amplified and transmitted rapidly by modern information technologies and that negatively affects society. Its association with the 2019 Coronavirus Disease pandemic is not exclusive, as it had already been described with the Coronavirus-1 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome pandemic in 2003. This false or misleading information may cause public reluctance widespread adoption of infection control measures promoted by health authorities, and thus delaying essential recomendations. The World Health Organization (WHO), in its eagerness to counteract, has established the WHO Information Network to Epidemics.

The incidence of bacterial infections in shrimp hepatopancreas cultivated in the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica, presented a high impact on yields in 2016-2017, affecting the survival of the animals and shrimp farm production. In addition, important incidences of Baculovirus penaei, detected in post-larvae used in part of the shrimp ponds, were reported. An Odds Ratio analysis was performed in an observational case-control study to determine the possible participation of this virus as a risk factor for subsequent bacterioses. The study demonstrates the active participation of Baculovirus penaei as an important risk factor. Survival data are presented by ponds infected by the virus vs free ponds.
