The purpose of this paper is to recognize the practices of care and attention of the agents of the traditional medical system responsible for female reproductive health in the south of the Colombian Amazon. In-depth interviews, focus groups and ethnographic observation with local health agents from five rural communities and urban areas of the Municipalities of Leticia and Puerto Nariño were conducted. The results showed that the formation of people, their bodies and good treatment, mediated by a constant control of the relationships between humans and non-humans and the search for good living, are established as the determinants of care practices and attention to women’s reproductive health. Likewise, there is a deep respect for the mother’s decisions during her procreative process, which coincides with the recent international provisions. These data serve as the basis for the unde...

Tarantulas play a fundamental role as regulators of small animal populations, and are essential in studies of biodiversity, biogeography, animal behavior, and species trade. Despite their importance, there is a significant lack of information on tarantulas in the eastern Peruvian Amazon. To address this knowledge gap, we have compiled an exhaustive list of tarantula species present in the department of Loreto, using bibliographic data from publications such as scientific articles, books, theses, and conference abstracts. We reported a total of 42 tarantula species, corresponding to five subfamilies: Theraphosinae (with 30 species), Aviculariinae (with 6 species Psalmopoeinae (with 4 species), Schismatothelinae (with 1 species) and Ischnocolinae (with 1 specie), none of which are threatened in any conservation category. Of the eight provinces of the department of Loreto, Maynas reported t...

We report an 82-year-old male from Iquitos, Amazon region of Peru, with a three-month history of mild-tomoderate painful skin lesions on the right lower limb. The clinical examination revealed four tumors of the right shin, exhibiting exophytic growth, verrucose appearance, and ulceration. Two subcutaneous nodules were noted. Enlarged inguinal lymphadenopathy was observed. The histopathological examination revealed a diagnosis of melanoma. This case emphasizes the need for comprehensive and multidisciplinary surveillance in regions with limited melanoma data leading to a subdiagnosis of this malignancy. Also, it highlights the importance of primary prevention such as sun protection in tropical areas to prevent cutaneous melanoma, advocating for increasing awareness and preventive measures.

Hookworms infection has become an increasingly serious threat to public health in Brazilian indigenous. Detection and/or clinical cases of hookworms have been reported in the past; however, nothing is known about the prevalence among indigenous Tapirapé in Brazil. We studied the presence of hookworms in indigenous Tapirapé ethnic group from county of Confresa, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Stool samples were collected from 542 members of the Tapirapé ethnic group and analyzed using formalin-ethyl ether and formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation, and zinc sulfate flotation. Hookworms were detected in 104 (19.24%) indigenous and the prevalence was similar in males (21.29%) and females (17.20%). Males aged under 16 years were more frequently infected. Symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pains were reported from 104 infected individuals . Other symptoms associated with hookworms infecti...

The study focuses on the Huachana lake, a vulnerable ecosystem in the Peruvian Amazon region that receives wastewater from the city of Iquitos. Despite its significance in ichthyology and its role as a type locality for various species, water bodies near Iquitos face threats. While a portion of the ichthyological diversity in the Loreto region is known, the Huachana lake had never been subject to sampling, making this study the first to examine fish diversity in this aquatic environment. A total of 52 fish species from 5 orders, 20 families, and 39 genera were identified. The Characiformes present the greatest species richness (30 species), followed by Cichliformes (12 species). Cichlidae and Characidae are the families richest in species. No species are endangered according to the IUCN; the majority are considered of least concern. The study also identified ornamental and commercial spe...

The present study evaluated the Monogenea fauna parasitizing Trachelyopterus galeatus Linnaeus, 1766 (Cangati) and investigated the influence of environmental and morphometric factors on the abundance of these parasites. Six species of monogeneans were identified, with Ameloblastella sp. and Cosmetocleithrum sp. being the most prevalent and having the highest mean intensity. Ameloblastella sp. stood out significantly compared to the other species, suggesting greater adaptive and competitive efficiency. It was observed that 46% of the fish harbored two species of Monogenea, while 10% harbored four or five species, indicating the coexistence of these parasites. Despite variations in host weight, length, and condition factor, these characteristics showed no significant relationship with the abundance of Monogenea, suggesting that individual body factors are not determinants of the infestati...

Population genetic variability of Brazil nut Bertholletia excelsa in the Madre de Dios region was determined by analyzing 11 microsatellites markers in a total of 108 trees. The global results showed a great allelic diversity (89 alleles, with a mean of 8.09 alleles per locus), at the localities level the highest allelic richness was found in Iberia (AR = 4.82) and the lowest in Itahuania (AR = 3.64), this the same localities were the only ones that presented an excess of heterozygotes. The results of the correspondence factor analysis (AFC) show a strong genetic overlap between most of the analyzed localities. The results of the Fixation Index (Fst) show that the localities of Iñapari and Iberia are more related to each other (Fst = 0.048), but slightly differentiated with the other localities (the values of Fst with the other localities varied between -0.001 to 0.193).
