The "algarrobo", Neltuma pallida is a key tree species in the seasonally dry tropical forests in Equatorial Pacific South America, currently at risk. Its regeneration depends on endozoochorous seed dispersal, in which seeds are ingested and later defecated by animals, helping to release and scarify them. This study compared the role of the native white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the introduced goat (Capra hircus) in seed dispersal. Seeds were recovered from the dung of both species after experimental feeding and from free-ranging goats grazing in fruiting N. pallida forests. Seed recovery was higher in deer dung (9.4%) than in goat dung (3.1%). Retention time was also shorter in deer (peak at 48 hours) than in goats (peak at 84 hours). Only deer scarification significantly improved germination percentage (Tukey test, p < 0.001) and germination speed (T25 = 8.98 days). Goats...

Introduction: Soil degradation in tropical agricultural landscapes represents one of the major challenges for sustainability and food security, particularly in the Peruvian Amazon. In this region, the loss of vegetative cover alters carbon storage and increases vulnerability to erosion. This study evaluated how gradients of canopy structure in representative agroecosystems—cassava with no canopy (CV-S), oil palm with intermediate canopy density (OP-S), cacao with medium-density canopy (CC-S), and coffee with high-density canopy (CF-S)—influence soil organic carbon density (SOCD) and erodibility (K factor). Methods: A total of 1,049 soil samples (0–20 cm) were collected across three Amazonian regions and analyzed for their physical, chemical, and textural properties, complemented by multivariate and geostatistical analyses using ordinary kriging. Results: Results showed that SOCD in...

Goat production in Peru is primarily carried out under extensive systems shaped by climatic variability, forage seasonality, infrastructure limitations, and persistent sanitary pressure. In this context, Creole goats represent a strategic animal genetic resource due to their capacity to adapt to arid and high-Andean environments. This review integrates the available evidence on production typologies in the main goat-producing regions of the country, the major sanitary and structural bottlenecks, and the state of the art of genomic, multi-omics, and reproductive biotechnology tools applicable to goats. It discusses how the transition from traditional markers to SNP genotyping, together with functional approaches such as microbiome analysis, transcriptomics, and proteomics, can contribute to understanding the biological basis of complex traits related to resilience, feed efficiency, and re...

Soil organic carbon (SOC) plays a crucial role in mitigating climate change and enhancing soil fertility. Its storage and dynamics are particularly significant in agricultural ecosystems of the Peruvian Amazon, where the expansion of agriculture and livestock farming may disrupt the regional carbon balance. This study aimed to analyze SOC variability and its relationship with edaphic and nutritional properties in agricultural systems in Eastern Peru (San Martín and Loreto regions). Four representative cropping systems were evaluated: coffee grown in agroforestry and polyculture systems; maize as a monoculture; and camu-camu and cocoa cultivated in monoculture and agroforestry systems, respectively. The highest SOC content (80.70 t·ha−1), phosphorus (12.03 mg·kg−1), and moisture (52.36%) were observed in coffee-growing soils, likely due to the presence of shade trees that enhance o...

Potentially toxic elements such as cadmium (Cd) in agricultural soils represent a global concern due to their toxicity and potential accumulation in the food chain. However, our understanding of cadmium’s complex sources and the mechanisms controlling its spatial distribution across diverse edaphic and geological contexts remains limited, particularly in underexplored agricultural regions. Our study aimed to assess the total accumulated Cd content in soils under avocado cultivation and its association with edaphic, geochemical, and geomorphological variables. To this end, we considered the total concentrations of other metals and explored their associations to gain a better understanding of Cd’s spatial distribution. We analyzed 26 physicochemical properties, the total concentrations of 22 elements (including heavy and trace metals such as As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Sr, Tl, ...
