This study assessed the prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal parasite infection in goats in Ayacucho, Peru. Fecal samples were collected from a total of 254 goats from four districts of Ayacucho: Ocaña (89), Colca (76), Pacaicasa (64), and Luricocha (25) during the dry season; recording the location, sex, and age of the animals. The fecal samples were analyzed using the flotation technique in salt and sugar solution, and modified McMaster egg counting techniques for eggs/oocysts (epg/opg) of gastrointestinal parasites. The associations between location, sex, and age with the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were analyzed using the chi-square test. Fecal samples showed an overall parasite prevalence of 87.80%. The identified parasites were Eimeria spp. (86.22%), Strongyle type eggs (STE) (65.75%), Skrjabinema spp. (7.87%), Trichuris spp. (3.15%) and Moniez...

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of collagenase, pipetting and incubation to reduce the filancia of semen and its relationship with sperm quality in alpacas for its cryopreservation. Semen samples were obtained by artificial vagina from 4-7-year-old males at the Reproductive Biotechnology Laboratory of the Canaán Agrarian Experimental Station of INIA (Ayacucho, Peru). The macroscopic (volume, pH and filancia) and microscopic (motility, concentration and vitality) characteristics of the semen were evaluated. Each sample was distributed in three aliquots and diluted with the commercial AndroMed® extender in a 1:1 ratio at 37 °C and subjected to three treatments: T1 = Collagenase 5%; T2 = Pipetting 10 times, and T3 = Incubation at 37 °C for 10 min. The microscopic characteristics were evaluated at 0, 20, 40, 60 and 120 min post-dilution). The filancia decreased signifi...

Background: Creole goat husbandry for milk and meat improves food security in rural areas in Perú. Body weight (BW) is a key trait for selecting breeding stock, and it is estimated to be using algorithms. Likewise, BW is common in livestock farming. Aim: This study aimed to compare BW prediction models using a data mining algorithm in Creole goats, considering their biometric measurements. Methods: Data from 1,075 females aged between 1 and 4 years were used. Measurements of chest width, thoracic perimeter, wither height, sacrum height, rump width and length, body length, cannon bone perimeter, age, and region of the herd were recorded. The regression trees (classification and regression tree), support vector regression (SVR), and random forest regression (RFR) algorithms were used. Results: The SVR was better at predicting BWs in Creole goat herds. Similarly, the results were stable du...
