A study in goats was carried out in the central coast of Peru to validate the FAMACHA© method for selective anthelmintic treatment in dairy goat herds. Blood and fecal samples were taken from 120 adult goats in five dairy goat farms. The micro haematocrit and the McMaster techniques plus faecal culture were used to evaluate the haematocrit, faecal nematode egg count (EPG) and to identify major nematode species, respectively. Spearman correlation coefficients were obtained. Two FAMACHA© criteria were used to identify animals that require anthelmintic treatment: 1: score 3, 4 or 5; 2: score 4 or 5, with <20% haematocrit in both cases. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value were assessed. Bunostomum sp and Haemonchus contortus were identified. Correlations between FAMACHA score, haematocrit and EPG were highly significant (p<0.001). False n...

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and monthly parasitic load of gastrointestinal nematodes and Fasciola hepatica in dairy cattle of the districts Nueve de Julio and Matahuasi el Mantaro Valley (Junín, Peru), as well as the epidemiological factors associated with these parasitosis. Monthly faecal samples were collected from 11 dairy farms in each district for one year. The samples were analysed with the modified Dennis technique for the detection and counting of F. hepatica eggs and the modified McMaster technique for nematode eggs. The mixed logistic regression test was used to evaluate the variables district, time of year, feeding system, age, temperature, rainfall and humidity as possible risk factors. The average monthly prevalence in Matahuasi and Nine of July for gastrointestinal nematodes was 24.5 and 30.3%, with monthly loads of 118.3 and 87.4 hpg, and for F. ...

This study assessed the prevalence and risk factors associated with gastrointestinal parasite infection in goats in Ayacucho, Peru. Fecal samples were collected from a total of 254 goats from four districts of Ayacucho: Ocaña (89), Colca (76), Pacaicasa (64), and Luricocha (25) during the dry season; recording the location, sex, and age of the animals. The fecal samples were analyzed using the flotation technique in salt and sugar solution, and modified McMaster egg counting techniques for eggs/oocysts (epg/opg) of gastrointestinal parasites. The associations between location, sex, and age with the prevalence of gastrointestinal parasites were analyzed using the chi-square test. Fecal samples showed an overall parasite prevalence of 87.80%. The identified parasites were Eimeria spp. (86.22%), Strongyle type eggs (STE) (65.75%), Skrjabinema spp. (7.87%), Trichuris spp. (3.15%) and Moniez...

There was no significant association between the location and the presence of parasites (p<0.05), however, there was a higher prevalence and parasite variety in Luricocha. Sex and age did not have a significant association with parasitosis (p>0.05), except in prevalences of Trichurisspp....
