The early stages of the development of a finite element method (FEM) based computational tool for numerically simulating mineral-slurry transport involving both Newtonian and non-Newtonian flows are described in this work. The rationale behind the conception, design and implementation of the referred object-oriented programming tool is thus initially highlighted. A particular emphasis is put on several architectural aspects accounted for and object class hierarchies defined during the development of the tool. Next one of the main modules composing the tool under development is further described. Finally, as a means of illustration, the use of the FEM based tool for simulating two-dimensional laminar flows is discussed. More specifically, canonical configurations widely studied in the past are firstly accounted for. A more practical application involving the simulation of a mineral-slurry...

The objective of the research was to estimate mathematical models for lead migration (μg/l) from a cellulose matrix using a neutral pH food simulant, taking two independent variables: total migration (mg/dm2 ) and the contact area (dm2 ), using multiple linear regression. The evaluated samples were two cellulose containers destined to the contact with food, being the origin of the cellulose from Chile and Brazil. Total and specific migration tests were carried out with the methodologies of Resolution No. 12 of MERCOSUR (1995) and method 3111 B of APHA (2005) respectively, under conditions of prolonged contact and at a temperature of 50 °C. The results of this research show that only the model for Brazilian pulp (Y = -55,864 – 0,304X1 + 9,173X2) was statistically adequate to make forecasts, with its correlation coefficient (R2) of 0,899. From the descriptive statistical analysis, the ...

We present the simulation of the application of the Model-based Predictive Control (MPC) of the drum level in a Combined Cycle Plant in order to minimize the time for reaching the highest capacity of plant, around 225 MW. In contrast to others control techniques, our simulation yields that the MPC has shown capabilities as to reach its expected power in about 40 minutes before than PID, time which normally takes the whole industrial process under this control. In the present study, we have tested up to three different reference functions in order to compare performance during the drum level control. According to the simulations, the MPC working together with these reference functions is seen to be promising in the sense of providing efficiency to the plant from the startup until the time when system is reaching 225 MW. We have also calculated a minor discrepancy of order of lees than 5%.

Currently biogeochemical models are used to understand and quantify key biogeochemical processes in the ocean. The objective of the present study was to validate predictive ability of a regional configuration of the PISCES biogeochemical model on main biogeochemical variables in Humboldt Current Large Marine Ecosystem (HCLME). The statistical indicators used to evaluate the model were the bias, root-mean-square error, correlation coefficient and, graphically, the Taylor’s diagram. The results showed that the model reproduces the dynamics of the main biogeochemical variables (chlorophyll, dissolved oxygen and nutrients); in particular, the impact of El Niño 1997-1998 in the chlorophyll (decrease) and oxygen minimum zone depth (increase). However, it is necessary to carry out sensitivity studies of the PISCES model with different key parameters values to obtain a more accurate represent...

The objective of this work is to validate the precipitation forecasts simulated with the Brazilian Regional Atmospheric Modelling Systems (BRAMS) numerical model in its version 5.3, for the La Libertad Region in Peru; this region of Peru has 80% of its land located in the northern highlands of Peru. In mountainous areas, precipitation is strongly influenced by the height of the terrain, a poor representation of the topographic elevations and depressions of the terrain can lead to an erroneous representation of the resolvable phenomena explicit by the model. Taking into account this characteristic of the study area, in the first instance the BRAMS model was configured to adequately represent the rugged orography of the local área at a horizontal resolution of 10 km. Then, the model was run to simulate precipitation forecasts at time horizons of 24, 48, 72, 96 and 120 ...

This study addresses the global issue of marine pollution, with a particular focus on plastic bag contamination, by leveraging real-time object detection techniques powered by deep learning algorithms. A detailed comparison was carried out between the YOLOv8, YOLO-NAS, and RT-DETR models to assess their effectiveness in detecting plastic waste in underwater environments. The methodology encompassed several key stages, including data preprocessing, model implementation, and training through transfer learning. Evaluation was conducted using a simulated video environment, followed by an in-depth comparison of the results. Performance assessment was based on critical metrics such as mean average precision (mAP), recall, and inference time. The YOLOv8 model achieved an mAP50 of 0.921 on the validation dataset, along with a recall of 0.829 and an inference time of 14.1 milliseconds. The YOLO-N...

We present a study of the expected advantages of application of eHealth services like telemedicine in non-urban zones located over the north part of Lima city. Essentially, this paper is focused on the fact how type-2 diabetes mellitus (DMII) and tuberculosis (TB) are spreading into a specific human group it how it might be alleviated with modern concepts of applications of eHealth technologies like telemedicine. In order to extract the most representative patterns a survey data collection was applied up to 50 families which were randomly selected. This information has served to simulate 1000 individual samples through the usage of the Monte Carlo algorithm. The simulated statistics in conjunction to the telemedicine methodologies enter into a mathematical formulation based on success probabilities and efficiencies. The resulting calculations allow us to analyze the possible scenarios wi...

The following work focuses on the kinematic and dynamic study of a four-wheeled robot, which is equipped with omnidirectional Mecanum wheels. The main objective of the thesis is to obtain a mathematical model from which both the kinematics and kinetics of the robot can be analyzed. Furthermore, the study presents a methodology to optimize the torques (and subsequent associated voltages) provided by each of the motors on the robot for a given trajectory. A system in which a non-powered trailer pulled by the robot is also analyzed at a kinematic level. In this stage, four different cases are considered. The construction of the trailer is also described on this work. In the first chapter, the global state of the art on analysis and control of omnidirectional robots (with focus on robots with Mecanum wheels) is presented. In the second chapter, the physical considerations for the general mov...

The assessment of climate change impacts on water resources and flood risk is typically underpinned by hydrological models calibrated and selected based on observed streamflow records. Yet, changes in climate are rarely accounted for when selecting hydrological models, which compromises their ability to robustly represent future changes in catchment hydrology. In this paper, we test a simple framework for selecting an ensemble of calibrated hydrological model structures in catchments where contrasting climatic conditions have been observed. We start by considering 78 model structures produced with the FUSE modular modelling framework and rely on a Pareto scheme to select model structures maximizing model efficiency in both wet and dry periods. The application of this approach in three case study basins in Peru enables the identification of structures with good robustness, but also good p...

We present a model of Probability of Success Call Completion (PSCC) from a typical I/O procedure and computationally tested through Monte Carlo simulation with Gaussian profiles. Under the I/O view the input and transfer functions are prepared without to abandon the randomness nature of the phenomenology. Because kernels are required by the I/O formulation, we have assumed that the Dirac-Delta functions play the role of kernels in according to the I/O representation. The results would indicate that under certain circumstances the formulation I/O is valid by a 10% of error respect to the Meo-Ajmone model. However, the weakness of the I/O approach would be in the extraction of a large number of free parameters, which do not necessarily encompasses the dynamic of phenomenon.

In this article, a simulation model was developed to propose and evaluate improvements that increase the productivity of the production process of a manufacturing company and at the same time help achieve the company's objectives, for which the Promodel simulation software was used. The study begins with the conceptualization of the model explaining the operation of the production process of the company, detailing the transactions used in the operations and then presenting the layout of the model with the different locations, entities and resources provided by the production process. And finally the results of the model are transcribed with the new values of the variables that intervene in the process and with these values compare it with the current ones and obtain the conclusions of productivity improvement.

At present, the use of solar energy applications is booming worldwide, particularly in Argentina, through the RENOVAR program. Therefore, an analysis of the solar resource is required for the purposes of a possible installation of a Photovoltaic Solar Plant. When the sun's rays reach the surface of the earth, certain obstacles are found in its path that tend to decrease the incident solar energy. In the atmosphere, there are gases and aerosols, such as atmospheric dust (volcanic ash, very fine earth, soot, etc ...) that cause solar attenuation. There are techniques to determine the available solar resource of a site, however, sometimes it is not applicable due to lack of adequate measuring equipment, whether for economic reasons, transfer, etc. Therefore, in this paper we want to show that knowing certain measured quantities directly and that are related to solar energy such as Normal Di...
