The effects of organic and conventional crop systems on chemical composition, antioxidant activity and functional properties were evaluated in white and dark chia (Salvia hispanica L.) seeds. The organic system reduced the total protein content, and increased the total carbohydrates but did not change polyunsaturated fatty acids, total phenolic or flavonoids. Organic white chia seeds showed the best techno-functional properties. The antioxidant capacity of chia extracts varied in relation to the chemical complexity and differential rate kinetics of different assays. Extractable total phenolic acids and antioxidant capacity were better in organic white chia seeds. In this first approach, we have demonstrated that the organic white chia seed has a better total antioxidant capacity measured by direct quencher approaches than its conventionally-grown counterpart. To summarize, we conclude th...

Myrciaria dubia is an Amazonian fruit shrub that produces numerous bioactive phytochemicals, but is best known by its high L-ascorbic acid (AsA) content in fruits. Pronounced variation in AsA content has been observed both within and among individuals, but the genetic factors responsible for this variation are largely unknown. The goals of this research, therefore, were to assemble, characterize, and annotate the fruit transcriptome of M. dubia in order to reconstruct metabolic pathways and determine if multiple pathways contribute to AsA biosynthesis.RESULTS: In total 24,551,882 high-quality sequence reads were de novo assembled into 70,048 unigenes (mean length = 1150 bp, N50 = 1775 bp). Assembled sequences were annotated using BLASTX against public databases such as TAIR, GR-protein, FB, MGI, RGD, ZFIN, SGN, WB, TIGR_CMR, and JCVI-CMR with 75.2 % of unigenes having annotations. Of the...

Purple corn (Zea mays L.) is a superfood native to Peru, highly regarded for its functional properties and commonly used in the preparation of traditional beverages and desserts, such as chicha morada and mazamorra morada. Following processing, the corn cobs remaining as a byproduct retain significant amounts of bioactive compounds with potential for utilization. This study proposes their use as a primary component in the production of teas. To ensure product safety, the moisture content, total ash, and counts of enterobacteria and aflatoxins in the raw materials were first evaluated. Fourteen formulations were developed, varying in the proportions of corn cobs, quince, stevia, cinnamon, and cloves, as well as extraction times (5 and 10 minutes at 100 °C) with hot water. Two rapid sensory evaluation methods using consumer panels were applied sequentially: Flash Profile (FP) and Check-...

Anodic electrogeneration of molecular chlorine from sodium chloride in an electrolytic cell produces a hypochlorous acid solution in an aqueous medium. This mixture of chloride and hypochlorous was used to leach gold from alluvial ore to its complex forms, [AuCl2]-, [AuCl4]-. The optimal amounts of NaCl in a neutral medium for gold leaching was 10 g L-1, while at pH 2, with a fixed NaCl concentration of 10 g L-1 it was observed a gold leaching increment of 70.4%. The addition of sodium hypochlorite to a solution of sodium chloride at pH 2 shows that it is the chloride oxidized product that performs the function of oxidant and can be used successfully for gold recovering from alluvial ore without the use of mercury.

During the last years, the world avocado trade is on the rise, however, approximately 20% of the production is rejected for low caliber. This avocado discarded by low caliber can be used in the elaboration of other products, to give it added value. The objective of this study was to determine the shelf life of Hass avocado oil, type of discard, obtained by: (a) Drying by stove/Soxhlet (b) Lyophilized/Expeller. For the physicochemical characterization of the oil, density, melting point, acidity index, refractive index, iodine index and peroxide index were determined. The induction time was carried out by the RANCIMAT method, for which three temperatures of 140 °C, 160 °C and 180 °C were used and the shelf life of the oil was obtained by extrapolation at 25 °C. The results indicate that there is a significant statistical difference in the physicochemical characteristics of both oils. T...

Experimental studies have polycythemias dual purpose; First, they can provide useful information for interpreting the other polycythemias mechanism occurring in man; also to better clarify constribuyen erythropoietic function. In our country, flushing height is a problem that deeply interested; production mechanism and implications physiologism have been studied by Professors Monge, Hurtado et al. In our stay in the United States, when we worked in the laboratories of Eleazar Barron, one of the topics we chose as research was polycythaemia caused by cobalt. At the same time we studied the oxidation of ascorbic acid and was discussed on the role of this vitamin in the mechanism of erythropoiesis reason that prompted us to investigate the action that ascorbic acid might exert on the development of polycythemia by cobalt and the study of the intimate mechanism of this polycythemia.

Humic substances (HS) are the main component of soil organic matter (SOM), a product of the pedogenetic process. In this study, the morphometric factors and climatic variable that condition the degree of humification, the organic carbon content of humic acids (HA) fulvic acids (FA) of 42 soil samples are related through the functional equation of factors of state of the soil proposed by Jenny. The degree of humification was determined by the Nagoya method proposed by Kumada. The quantification of organic carbon was determined using the method by Walkley and Black. The morphometric parameters of the relief were obtained from the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and the climate parameter of the MODIS sensor. The results show that the relief factor conditions the degree of humification and the climate factor conditions the organic carbon content of humic acids (HA) and fulvic acids (FA).

The current understanding of acid-base physiology states that all changes in the blood, pH, as well as variations in a healthy state and during disease occur through changes in 3 variables: (a) Carbon dioxide (CO2), (b) electrolyte relative concentration, and (c) weak acid concentration. Internal milieu and acid-base disturbances generate alterations inthree areas: a) direct damage in multiple organs and systems, (b) a compensatory response to the disturbance, which may be suitable or incomplete, and (c) functional alterations in immune cells. The classically used Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for the classification of acid-base disorders in respiratory (abnormal CO2) and metabolic (abnormalbicarbonate) and for the “anion gap” calculation, but this equilibrium  equation assumes that albumin and phosphate concentrations are very close to normal, a condition that is not necessari...

The mechanisms of conversion to elemental sulfur, sulphites, sulfates and others; they are diverse, leading to the formation of sulfuric acid and therefore, to the acidification of the medium. Based on these characteristics, acidophilic bacteria are considered as sulfur chemolytotrophs, since they obtain their energy from the conversion of sulfur compounds and, in most cases, the final product is sulfate. The acid formed by these bacteria that oxidize sulfides is sulfuric acid. Similarly, bacteria isolated from acid drains, during their metabolic action, generate a decrease in pH. The Thiobacillus genus is relevant among the others for its ability to oxidize sulfur compounds, producing elemental sulfur extracellularly. The energy required to carry out its functions is derived from the oxidation of one or more reduced sulfur compounds including sulfide and thiosulfate. In the study of the...

In this work, it has been studied the influence of oxygenated functional groups on adsorption property of an activated carbon (CA), which was prepared from aguaje seeds (Mauritia flexuosa L. F.) by a chemical activation with phosphoric acid. Later the activated carbon was oxidized with nitric acid. The adsorptive capacity of phenolic compounds such as phenol, 4-chlorophenol and 4-nitrophenol were compared using both of the adsorbents, the activated carbon (CA) and the oxidized activated carbon (ACA). The characterizations of both activated carbons were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption measurements, Boehm titration, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and FTIR spectroscopy. The oxidized sample (ACA) showed an increase in the microporous area from 756 m2/g to 1272 m2/g, likewise ACA presented an increase in the concentration of oxygenated functional groups from 4,22 mmolH+.g-1 to 4,82 mmolH+...

The alterations of the lipid metabolism and the uncertainty at the moment of selecting beneficial foods to the human body lead to the investigation of omega fatty acids. The study is based on the evaluation of the effect of three preparation methods of chía seed, before getting the oil through two extraction methods and the characterization of the lipid fraction of chia seed (Salvia hispánica L.) from Colta-Ecuador. The oil yield of the conditioned seeds showed statistical differences. Regarding the extraction method, the differences were highly significant, the use of ether in the Soxhlet equipment showed the superiority in the oil performance in a relation of approximately 2:1 versus immersion in hexane. The presence and the content of fatty acids was determined by the use of a gas chromatograph with FiD detector Agilent Technologies 5975C brand, fatty acids were separated with a cap...

This research focused on the synthesis of a functional alginate-based material via chemical modification processes with two steps: oxidation and reductive amination. In previous alginate functionalization with a target molecule such as cysteine, the starting material was purified and characterized by UV-Vis,1 H-NMR and HSQC. Additionally, the application of FT-IR techniques during each step of alginate functionalization was very useful, since new bands and spiked signals around the pyranose ring (1200–1000 cm−1) and anomeric region (1000–750 cm−1) region were identified by a second derivative. Additionally, the presence of C1-H1 of β-D-mannuronic acid residue as well as C1-H1 of α-L-guluronic acid residue was observed in the FT-IR spectra, including a band at 858 cm−1 with characteristics of the N-H moiety from cysteine. The possibility of attaching cysteine molecules to an a...
