Introduction: Early onset neonatal sepsis (EONS), particularly in preterm sepsis, is a potentially fatal issue. Evaluation of mean platelet volume (MPV) as an EONS predictor was the goal. Methods: Four databases were used to conduct a systematic evaluation of cohort and case–control studies. Up till the end of October 2022, 137 articles were found utilizing the search method. Following the review, 12 studies were included. Leukocytes, MPV, platelets, gender, birth weight, gestational age, mortality, and C-reactive protein (CRP) were all taken into account while analyzing the prediction of EONS. Inverse-variance methodology and the random-effects model were used. Using GRADE, the evidence’s quality was evaluated. Results: Neonatal patients with sepsis had significantly higher MPV levels than do neonates without sepsis (MD 1.26; 95% CI 0.89–1.63; p < 0.001). An increased MPV during t...

Background: In Peru, the current immunization schedule for COVID-19 includes BBIBP-CorV, BNT162B2 and ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 vaccines. Although the full immunization schedule is two doses, some countries have recently included a booster dose to their schedule. Methods: We conducted a search for scientific evidence on the efficacy and safety of booster vaccination with BNT162b2 vaccine in a population with a complete vaccination schedule for COVID-19 in Peru. Evidence: Four evidence-based recommendation documents, one observational study and three ongoing phase III clinical trials were included for analysis. Conclusion: To date, there is insufficient evidence on the efficacy of adding a booster dose to the immunization schedule for COVID-19. The available evidence does not justify the use of a booster dose of BNT162B2 vaccine in a population that has previously received two doses of the aforemen...

Background: The risk of prematurity includes a wide variety of complications at birth, such as infectious diseases, intraventricular hemorrhage, neurosensory deficiencies, respiratory failure and involvement of other systems, as well as growth and developmental problems. Therefore, the achievement of the Millennium Development Goal of reducing child mortality depends largely on the reduction of mortality related to premature birth, making it one of the most important challenges for modern public health. Objetive: To identify maternal factors associated with prematurity. Material and Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted on 2000 live newborns in a public hospital in Trujillo, between 2015-2019. The groups were divided according to the criteria of gestational age. The paired maternal clinical variables were analyzed according to prematurity or term, and a bivariate and ...

Background: Skin cancer incidence has increased over the last years, becoming a major public health problem. Objective: To describe the awareness, behavior and attitudes concerning sun exposure among beachgoers in the northern coast of Peru. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study in the Pimentel beach, Peru. The "Beach Questionnaire" was used and we surveyed all the beachgoers from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from March 5 to March 19. For the statistical analysis, sun exposure habits, sunburns history, knowledge, attitudes and practices were crossed with sex using the chi2 test. Results: We surveyed 410 beachgoers, the most frequent phototype was type III (40.5%). Only the 13.66% of the respondents correctly answered the seven knowledge questions related to sun exposure and skin cancer. Men more frequently agreed that "when they are tanned their clothes looks nicer" (p = 0.048). Likewise...

Aim: To assess the association between elevated triglycerides/glucose index (TGI) and insulin resistance (IR) or hyperinsulinemia after oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) in a sample of healthy adults. Methods: We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study in euthyroid non-diabetic adults, who attended the outpatient service of a private clinic in Lima-Peru during the 2012–2016 period. Participants were categorized in two groups according to the presence or absence of elevated TGI, IR or hyperinsulinemia after OGTT. A TGI value ≥ 8.65 was considered as elevated. We defined IR as a Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA-IR) value ≥ 2.28 and hyperinsulinemia after OGTT as a serum insulin value ≥ 80μU/mL after 120 min of 75-g glucose intake. We elaborated crude and adjusted Poisson regression models to assess the association between elevated TGI and IR or hyperinsulinemia after OGTT...

The 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic (COVID-19) has posed various challenges to the strata of society and medical education has been no exception. Globally, universities have proposed various initiatives in undergraduate and medical internships such as the partial virtualization of their curricular content, the modification of their curriculum and educational activities and the incorporation of students from the last years to the management of COVID-19 patients. In medical residency, surgical specialties and those that base their learning on procedures are the most affected. Residents of different specialties have been incorporated into healthcare tasks different from their specialty and some of their learning activities have been virtualized. Peru must make an evaluation of these strategies and the possible adaptation to our reality.
