Daily consumption of probiotics reduce levels of serum cholesterol by up to 3%, which is significant to prevent hypercholesterolemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and cause of mortality. The genus Lactobacillus is used in industry as a probiotic and some species reduce serum cholesterol by two mechanisms, the adsorption of cholesterol and the production of the enzyme bile salt hydrolase, which vary according to species. The aim of the study was to assess the ability of probiotic bacteria group isolated from coast serum. 53 strains were isolated from nine coastal serum sample; the sensitivity to cefoxitin and vancomycin, and the tolerance to pH 2.0 and 0.3% bile salts were evaluated to determine its probiotic potential. Five microorganisms were selected and molecularly identified as Lactobacillus fermentum. The ability to absorb cholesterol measured by the method of Kimoto, sh...

The objective of the study was to characterize microorganisms with probiotic potential of manure of lactating Brahman calves in Sucre (Colombia). Bacteria and yeasts were isolated from manure samples and the probiotic capacity of these strains was determined by bile salt resistance test (0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.3%), resistance to acidic pH (pH 3, 4, 5.6, 7 ), tolerance to NaCl (2, 4, 6, 8, 10%) and antagonistic activity (Salmonella sp and Escherichia coli). Nine microorganisms were identified and three passed the tolerance tests. The antagonistic capacity was determined against pathogenic bacteria (Salmonella sp and E. coli), evidenced by halos (mm) of the three selected strains. The identification of the strains was carried out by the biochemical methods API 50 CHL V5.1 for Lactobacillus and API 20 AUX for yeasts. Molecular analysis of two strains (M13a and 103M2) identified strain M13a as E...

Autochthonous probiotics derived from the host’s native microbiota can enhance gastrointestinal colonization, feed efficiency, disease resistance, and stress tolerance in aquaculture species. This study evaluated bacteria isolated from the intestine and gills of gamitana (Colossoma macropomum) based on key probiotic selection criteria, including tolerance to acidic conditions and bile salts, antagonistic activity against pathogens, antibiotic susceptibility, biofilm formation, and enzymatic activity. A total of 69 bacterial isolates were obtained using Man, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) broth and Trypticase Soy Broth (TSB). Five isolates (7.2%) met all selection criteria and were molecularly identified as Lactobacillus brevis (IPIFAB2, IPIFAC1, BRALA1) and Lactococcus garvieae (G25, G23). L. brevis isolates showed moderate acid tolerance, with survival rates between 31 ± 2.04% and 36.4 ± ...

Irritable intestine syndrome is a common condition that affects millions of persons all over the world. It has a significant impact in the quality of life of affected persons, influencing their social and working environments and leading to individual suffering and a macroeconomic impact because of increased absenteeism and poor working performance. Prebiotics and probiotics are supplements of nondigestible diet, made up of some chemicals and live microorganisms (bacteria or yeasts from the intestinal commensal flora), which, when ingested in optimal amounts (symbiotic therapy), are beneficial for human health. With no doubt, the intestinal mucosa is the greatest surface in the human body exposed to external stimuli, and it also contains a high proportion of immune cells. Any alteration in homeostasis between beneficial and potentially harmful microorganisms in the intestinal microflora ...

Probiotic therapy in endodontics emerges as a promising biotherapeutic strategy to modulate the microbiota of the root canal system, prevent microbial recolonization, and promote pulp-periapical health. Probiotics, defined as live microorganisms that confer health benefits to the host, have demonstrated antimicrobial and immunomodulatory effects, in addition to competing for nutrients and adhesion sites against endodontic pathogens such as Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans. The reviewed evidence includes in vitro, in vivo, and clinical studies, highlighting the ability of strains such as Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus, Limosilactobacillus reuteri, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, Lacticaseibacillus casei, and Bifidobacterium species to inhibit pathogens in both planktonic and biofilm phases, with efficacy comparable to traditional irrigants and intracanal medication but with lower c...
