The effect of adding oregano (Origanum vulgare) essential oil and dry ginger (Zingiber officinale) in the diet on body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion rate was evaluated in 624 male Cobb 500 broiler chicks randomly assigned into four treatments with four replicates of 39 chicks each. Intestine and liver samples from four broilers per treatment were collected at day 14 and two at day 42 after treatment to determine possible histological toxic alterations and to determine the intestinal histomorphometry of jejunum. The treatments were: APC, Bacitracin methylene disalicylate (1 kg/MT of feed) and colistine sulfate 8% (0.25 kg/MT); SPC, without growth promoter; AEO, oregano essential oil (1 kg /MT); and JD, dryy ginger (10 kg/MT). There was no statistical difference between groups in body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion rate. Group AEO showed slightly larger villi b...

The aim of this study was to isolate and identify bacteria of Lactobacillus genus from poultry litter with 1, 2 or 3 uses and low ammonia records. Resistance for conditions at pH 5 and 8 was evaluated as well as the ability to inhibit activity in urease bacteria (Staphylococcus spp and Pseudomona spp) isolated from poultry litter. Seventy three suspected colonies of Lactobacillus were identified by culture in selective media and morphological patterns. Gram staining and catalase test revealed that only 19 strains were of Lactobacillus genus. Furthermore, through PCR was found that 53% corresponded to L. reuteri, 32% to L. plantarum, 10% to L. vaginalis and 5% to L. salivarius. All isolates survived at conditions of pH 5 and 8 and all strains produced some type of active biocin against Staphylococci spp or Pseudomona spp which might be useful as additive to regulate the microbiota in poul...

The present study evaluated the in vitro probiotic capacity of 150 lactic acid bacteria (BAL) isolated from feces of three breeds of guinea pigs from an Experimental Center of intensive rearing, by means of in vitro tests on agar that evaluated the capacity of amylolytic, proteolytic enzymatic activity, cellulolytic and antagonism against pathogenic Salmonella sp. The BAL strains that achieved a positive result in any of the in vitro tests were evaluated for survival at pH 2.0, 4.0 and 0.3% bile. Gram positive strains were obtained, 93.3% of them with bacillary morphology and6.7% with ovoid morphology. 38.7% of strains showed the ability to degrade soluble starch, 66.7% for milk proteins and 4% for sodium carboxymethyl cellulose. Only 5.3% of strains had an antagonistic action against Salmonella sp. The frequency of strains according to race in relation to amylolytic and proteolytic degr...

The objective of the study was to determine the presence of ivermectin residues in liver tissue of alpacas in an abattoir in the province of Caylloma, department of Arequipa, Peru. In total, 50 liver samples were collected and evaluated by competitive ELISA technique with a commercial kit. In addition, information was collected on the origin of the alpacas (Challhuanca, Tocra); age (less than 2 years, between 2-3 years, more than 3-4 years, and more than 4 years); sex (male or female) and breed (Huacaya or Suri). Results showed that 10% of livers were found to be positive for ivermectin residues with values that were above the Maximum Residue Limit established by the Codex Alimentarius for alpaca liver tissue (15 µg/kg). Positive samples contained levels between 17.28 to 79.10 µg/kg of ivermectin residues. Positive results were found for liver samples from different origin, age group, ...
