There are few studies in Spanish that analyze the complex relationships between gender stereotypes and gender morphology, even fewer that include non-binary forms. We evaluated the effects of two independent variables (stereotype bias and gender morphology) on the comprehension of sentences that include role nouns with masculine and feminine stereotypicality. We analyzed two dependent variables: noun phrase reading time (determiner + role noun) and total reading time. We found an early incidence of stereotypes during comprehension and different effects at the noun phrase level compared to the sentence level. Furthermore, the non-binary form [-e] seemed to function as a generic term for speakers of Argentine Spanish.

This paper analyzes the negative influence that cultural friction areas can promote on intercultural contacts. First, we expose the critical incident method like cross-cultural training model (Arthur, 2001). Then we show the negative effects that sensitive cultural zones can exert on the formation of prejudices and stereotypes about culturally diverse groups, analyzing 77 critical incidents collected in two different formative contexts. The main cultural shock areas detected are a) intercultural communication barriers, b) gender roles, and c) the cultural expressions statement. Strategies to improve the method validity are proposed.

Walking plays the role of the primary structuring axis of the landscape. Recent studies highlight the importance of evaluating walkability from a gender perspective. This article addresses this gap, analysing different in the use of space in central areas of São Paulo, through an urban ergonomic evaluation. The results revealed that the presence of women on the sidewalks is related to mixed-use areas and the presence of active facades. It is suggested that urban planning policies consider these specificities to promote gender equity in walkability and improve the quality of life in cities.

Violence and insecurity associated with drug trafficking have generated high levels of crime in Mexico. The latter has led to an increase in crime rates among society and, furthermore, to a large part of the population perceiving insecurity and victimization as two of the country’s main problems. This article proposes an explanatory and psychosocial model to study fear of crime in Mexico. In order to achieve this, the perspectives of victimization, risk perception and vulnerability are addressed. A total of 443 university students participated in the study (49.9% men and 50.1% women) with a mean of 21.32 years (SD = 2.23). The results showed that having been a victim of a crime (victimization) and the perceived risk perception (contextual) further promote concern about the crime. In relation to gender (vulnerability), it was found that women are more concerned than ...

In the present text, the authors propose a novel methodology for the identification and analysis of the speeches made by plaintiffs and judges in cases of recognition of trans* identities. Both conclude that these actors converge in the process from rigid binary, pathologizing and genitalizing discourses, making very scarce references to the most recent contributions that Law and Social Sciences have made to the understanding of gender identity.

The research was aimed to determine the differences between the levels of multiculturalism according to gender, place of origin, and the living experience with the traditional customs of students of high school No. 157 “José Abelardo Quiñones” (Peru). To reach this goal, the researchers implemented a study based on a quantitative approach, with a hypothetico-deductive method and a descriptive cross-sectional design. From the application of the intercultural traits instrument,  we conclude that there are significant differences, with a strong level tendency, in gender and customs living experiences of the students.

The analysis of gender dynamics in the context of climate change reveals underlying power structures that shape the implementation of adaptation strategies. Social dynamics intersecting with climate impacts often create vulnerabilities and elicit varied responses between genders. This study presents small-scale research on gender roles in climate adaptation within coffee farming in the Olmedo canton, Loja province, Ecuador. Using qualitative interviews and participant observation, data were collected from coffee-producing families. Findings indicate that coffee production involves gender-differentiated family efforts influenced by power relations and traditional gender roles, with women and their children assuming pivotal roles in adopting climate adaptation measures. These insights contribute empirical evidence for discussions on gender neutrality in climate adaptation policies in South...

Women victims of sexual assault encounter several hurdles when seeking justice in Chilean legal institutions; however, recent efforts by the Chilean Supreme Court to fight bias against underrepresented groups have foregrounded the importance of applying a gender perspective in court trials. In light of the publication by the Chilean Supreme Court in 2019, I analyze the court ruling of a 2004 rape case that led Corporación Humanas?a feminist NGO?to file a petition before the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Given the ruling’s egregious biases, the NGO holds Chile responsible for the violation of several victims’ rights specified in international human rights treaties. Based on the written court ruling, I examine how the judges and other legal actors failed to deliver justice with a gender perspective. For that purpose, I analyze how the judges, the prosecutors, and the defe...

Thanks to movements such as Graphic Medicine and models as Community Translation, the transfer, accessibility and dissemination of science to society is increasing. In this context, infographics have become a communicative tool with several advantages and applications in the medical field for health professionals, patients and general public. With design based on a mixed-methodology approach that combines bibliographical review and corpus linguistics, this article aims to analyse the reliable nature of health infographics as a multimodal informative genre. After a detailed analysis of extra-and intratextual characteristics that define this resource in Spanish, we have confirmed that terminology presence in these materials is lower than processes and strategies to reformulate the content and making it more comprehensible. This demonstrates that it is possible to bring medicine closer to c...

Different genres of discourse have been addressed in studies of professional discourse, but there is little empirical evidence on this subject (Foscarini, 2013). This paper presents an approach to the lectionary genre from a rhetorical-discourse analysis perspective based on genre studies that allow for a text graphic description (Swales and McCarty, 2017). The aim was to describe the discourse characteristics and rhetorical structure of the lectionary in the Chilean context and to situate it in relation to other genres and practices in the field of education. For this purpose, interviews were conducted, regulatory documentation was analyzed, and a sample of one hundred lessons from ten different lectionaries was examined. The analysis of content and linguistic discourse reveals two mandatory and recursive steps (contextualizing a lesson in lesson planning and describing the lesson) to f...

Objectives: To analyze and discuss barriers for diagnosis and therapy of cervical cancer (CC) in a public hospital in Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: A qualitative study was performed between December 2019 and March 2020. Observation and detailed interviews were the data collection tools used. In total, 15 detailed interviews with patients and healthcare personnel were carried out. Results: For healthcare personnel interviewed, barriers (for good care) are basically lack of personnel and poor hospital infrastructure. This leads to weakening educational campaigns with respect to the importance of adequate screening for CC prevention. For patients, time limitations, lack of knowledge and fear of being exposed to a male healthcare worker are the main barriers for healthcare proper decision making with respect to CC prevention and management. Conclusions: The weak Peruvian hospital infras...
