Accessibility, multimodality and community translation: a preliminary study of discursive genre oncological health infographic into Spanish language

Thanks to movements such as Graphic Medicine and models as Community Translation, the transfer, accessibility and dissemination of science to society is increasing. In this context, infographics have become a communicative tool with several advantages and applications in the medical field for health professionals, patients and general public. With design based on a mixed-methodology approach that combines bibliographical review and corpus linguistics, this article aims to analyse the reliable nature of health infographics as a multimodal informative genre. After a detailed analysis of extra-and intratextual characteristics that define this resource in Spanish, we have confirmed that terminology presence in these materials is lower than processes and strategies to reformulate the content and making it more comprehensible. This demonstrates that it is possible to bring medicine closer to citizens by mitigating any linguistic, social, cognitive or cultural barriers through the inclusion of various semiotic codes.
