Research shows that consumption correlates with the experience of subjective well-being. However, there is little literature on this phenomenon among young people. This exploratory study aims to know how university students perceive that consumption and brands intervene on subjective well-being and identify the elements they consider in their consumption behaviors aimed at obtaining well-being. A qualitative methodology of phenomenological design was used, with university students from the city of Lima. The analysis followed a process of descriptive coding. The experience of consumption and well-being reveals itself as a phenomenon relative to each person, in particular their sense of need and value framework about material goods, factors that seem to be modulated by their family environment. Young people find in purchase practices and brands a conduit to meet their social needs, specifi...

Purpose. The increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in news production raises important questions about audience acceptance. This research explores group differences in comfort levels toward news generated by AI and news produced with AI assistance, focusing on the effect of the main news sources. It is hypothesized that using social media as a main gateway for news may influence comfort with AI-generated news due to the users’ familiarity with algorithm personalization. Methodology. A quantitative analysis was conducted on a representative sample of 2012 Portuguese internet users. Nonparametric tests were applied for group comparisons, and a composite AI Comfort Index was developed to enable parametric testing of interaction effects between awareness of AI and main source of news. Results and Conclusions. The analysis identifies higher comfort levels when AI is presented as a...

Digital media allows the emergence of different activities that provide new ways to participate in social and political life. The Internet allows reaching groups that are normally inactive or less active in conventional or offline forms of political participation. We sought to explore the influence that frequency of Internet connection, Internet social participation and political discussion (talk about politics) have on political participation on the Internet in three different generations (n = 502, age: 18-67). The youngest participants presented a higher frequency of connection and activities on the Internet, while the older generational group exhibited a greater frequency of political discussion. In general , the three variables are relevant to explain political activity on the Internet; however, the weight of each variable is different depending on the generation considered.

This study aimed to explore the relationship between parental disciplinary practices and internet addiction. 568 adolescents participated. A Sociodemographic Questionnaire, the Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and the Dimensions of Discipline Inventory - Form C (DDI-C) were used. 73.1% of users with mild and moderate addiction were identified. Mothers showed greater use of all disciplinary dimensions. Differences were found only in the father's inductive discipline, depending on the family setting. However, there were no differences between adolescents from different family setting regarding internet addiction. Associations were observed between parental disciplinary dimensions and internet addiction. Finally, the punitive discipline of the mother and father and the inductive discipline of the mother, were predictors of internet addiction.

Addressing the global challenge of sustainable waste management, this research investigates the influence of social dynamics and digital connectivity on rural residents’ willingness to adopt waste classification practices, essential for sustainable environmental management. Through a comprehensive analysis of 5413 rural participants surveyed in the China Labor-force Dynamic Survey (CLDS), this study employs a novel mixed-methods approach. It integrates quantitative analysis with the Manski social interaction framework and a Recursive Bivariate Probit model to explore the intricate interplay between community interactions, internet access, and environmental behaviors. Our methodology stands out for its unique combination of social theory and econometric modeling to address a pressing environmental issue. Results highlight a significant effect of mobile internet use and social interactio...

At present, there is diverse scientific evidence of the contributions of smart environments (SE) that have positively impacted various urban problems. However, the concept of SE is very broad, so it is relevant to investigate how these technological trends have been integrated into the university educational environment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore and describe the state of the art on the impact of intelligent environments implemented through the Internet of Things (IoT) in university education. Therefore, a systematic review of the literature was developed. The research was developed with a mixed approach and descriptive scope. From this study, it was determined that the purpose of implementing SE in university education is focused on contributing to the teaching and learning process and managing and optimizing the use of resources provided by the educational en...

The study aimed to examine the excessive use of the Internet in the mental health of students of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at the National University of the Alti-plano, Puno, Peru. The study was descriptive, explanatory and cross-sectional, carried out with 226 students (152 men and 74 women) from I to X cycle, aged 23.4 ± 5.5 years. Mental health was related to anxiety, depression and the sleep quality index. Internet use was quantified through a survey, exploring the time (h/day) of use during the last 30 days; anxiety and depression were determined through the Hamilton Rating Scale (HARS and HDRS), with internal consistency, α = 0.93 and 0.89, respectively; and the sleep quality index using the Pittsburgh questionnaire (α=0.87). The results indicate that depression (β= 0.292; p<0.001), anxiety (β = 0.229; p<0.001) and excessive use of the Internet (β = 0.178; p&l...

In this paper we report the results of a qualitative research study about the emerging teaching strategies derived from the growing problem of academic plagiarism due to large amounts of information available on the internet. The participants were 17 experimented (seniority of 10 years or more) teachers engaged in undergraduate teaching at the second largest public university in Mexico. The main goal of the study was to account for the classic or traditional teaching strategies that teachers resort to in order to fight plagiarism, a practice that is rife because of the easy access to internet and related technologies. The results made possible to establish two main categories, the first one related with the strategies to prevent academic plagiarism, and the second one related with the strategies of detection and sanction of it. The analysis explore...
