The Vaccinium genus consists of a variety of berries with high nutritious components consumed worldwide leading to the development of micropropagation protocols to supply the demand. Mortiño, the Andean Blueberry (Vaccinium floribundum Kunth) is a wild berry that grows in high-altitude grasslands with nutritious and commercial potential in Ecuador. In this study, the use of PPMTM (Plant Preservative Mixture™) was effective controlling contamination for the in vitro establishment of Vaccinium floribundum Kunth in contrast to a conventional method using EtOH and Clorox. Stems were defoliated and cut into 1 cm segments, then immersed in liquid MS (Murashige & Skoog) supplemented with 5% v/v PPMTM without pH adjustment for 5 hours under constant shaking. After immersion, segments were transferred to flasks containing WPM (Woody Plant Media) medium supplemented with an additional 2 mlL...

Acidithiobacillus ferrivorans is a psychrotolerant acidophile capable of growing and oxidizing ferrous and sulphide substrates at low temperatures. To date, six genomes of this organism have been characterized; however, evidence of a plasmid in this species has been reported only once, whereby there is no conclusive role of the plasmids in the species. Herein, two novel plasmids of A. ferrivorans PQ33 were molecularly characterized and compared at a genomic scale. The genomes of two plasmids (12 kbp and 10 kbp) from A. ferrivorans PQ33 (NZ_LVZL01000000) were sequenced and annotated. The plasmids, named pAfPQ33-1 (NZ_CP021414.1) and pAfPQ33-2 (NZ_CP021415.1), presented 9 CDS and 13 CDS, respectively. In silico analysis showed proteins involved in conjugation (TraD, MobA, Eep and XerD), toxin-antitoxin systems (HicA and HicB), replication (RepA and DNA binding protein), transcription regul...

Ankistrodesmus falcatus strain UCP001 is a native oleaginous microalgae isolated from the Peruvian Amazon basin. In this study we sequenced, de novo assembled, and functionally annotated the complete mitochondrial genome of the native oleaginous microalgae Ankistrodesmus falcatus strain UCP001 (Accesion number MT701044). This mitogenome is a typical circular double stranded DNA molecule of 41,048 bp in total length with G + C content of 37.4%. The mitogenome contains 49 genes, including 18 protein coding genes, 5 ribosomal (rRNA) genes and 26 transfer RNA (tRNA) genes. A phylogenetic analysis of 18 microalgae species indicated that Ankistrodesmus falcatus strain UCP001 was closely related to Ourococcus multisporus and Raphidocelis subcapitata. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Ankistrodesmus falcatus strain UCP001 enriches genomic resources of oleaginous native microalgae fro...

Capirona (Calycophyllum spruceanum Benth.) belongs to subfamily Ixoroideae, one of the major lineages in the Rubiaceae family, and is an important timber tree. It originated in the Amazon Basin and has widespread distribution in Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. In this study, we obtained the first complete chloroplast (cp) genome of capirona from the department of Madre de Dios located in the Peruvian Amazon. High-quality genomic DNA was used to construct libraries. Pair-end clean reads were obtained by PE 150 library and the Illumina HiSeq 2500 platform. The complete cp genome of C. spruceanum has a 154,480 bp in length with typical quadripartite structure, containing a large single copy (LSC) region (84,813 bp) and a small single-copy (SSC) region (18,101 bp), separated by two inverted repeat (IR) regions (25,783 bp). The annotation of C. spruceanum cp genome predicted 87 protein-c...

The population of Peruvian creole cattle (PCC) is decreasing mainly due to the introduction of more productive breeds in recent years. We report the complete mitochondrial genome sequence of a PCC bull for the first time. This genome was 16,339 bp in length with the base composition 31.43% A, 28.64% T, 26.81% C, and 13.12% G. It contained 13 protein-coding genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 22 transfer RNA genes and a control region. Among the 37 genes, 28 were positioned on the H-strand and 9 were positioned on the L-strand. The most frequently used codons were CUA (Leucine), AUA (Isoleucine), AUU (Isoleucine), AUC (Isoleucine) and ACA (Threonine). Maximum likelihood analysis clearly demonstrated that PCC are strongly related to a native African breed, giving insights into the maternal ancestry of PCC. The annotated mitochondrial genome of PCC would serve as an important genetic data set for...

Cattle spread throughout the American continent during the colonization years, originating creole breeds that adapted to a wide range of climate conditions. The population of creole cattle in Peru is decreasing mainly due to the introduction of more productive breeds in recent years. During the last 15 years, there has been significant progress in cattle genomics. However, little is known about the genetics of the Peruvian creole cattle (PCC) despite its importance to (i) improving productivity in the Andean region, (ii) agricultural labor, and (iii) cultural traditions. In addition, the origin and phylogenetic relationship of the PCC are still unclear. In order to promote the conservation of the PCC, we sequenced the mitochondrial genome of a creole bull, which also possessed exceptional fighting skills and was employed for agricultural tasks, from the highlands of Arequipa for the firs...
