Nowadays, wireless sensor devices have received wide attention across medical application areas; among them, implantable sensing devices are between the most important because of the contribution they make to healthcare and investigations. Nevertheless, the implantable sensing devices must be tested before pre-clinical or in-vivo studies are initiated and test benches are used to perform this previous tests. For this reason, this thesis presents the design and implementation of a test bench to acquire the data from an implantable sensing device that is being developed and will be used to sense the pressure within the thoracic cavity of mammals. The test bench consists on: a sealed container with two connections to increase and sense the internal pressure and is the environment where the sensor will be tested, and a wireless communication system that will acquire and process the sensor’...

“Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an emerging pandemic caused by aging, longevity, and industrialization. Most people diagnosed with PD initially experience mild symptoms, but over time the symptoms become debilitating. Given their intensive care requirement, most married people living with PD receive care from their spouses; most are female caregivers. Because caregiving is hard work with long hours, caregivers experience stress, fatigue, and depression, often leading to exhaustion and burnout. The purpose of this descriptive phenomenological study is to understand the lived experience of women caregivers of husbands living with PD. As part of this study protocol, women caring at home for their husbands diagnosed with PD will be purposely recruited from the Colorado Parkinson Foundation. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted by Zoom© until data saturation is achieved. Colaizzi’...

Peruvian film production has witnessed a multiplicity of proposals and new voices since the turning of the century, but the academic production of Film Studies continues to lack a comprehensive review of what is being studied, who is doing the research, where it is being conducted, and where these works can be read. This paper aimed to identify the main characteristics of the field of Film Studies in Peru between 2016 and 2023. Using a quantitative approach, a systematic literature review was conducted based on the PRISMA 2020 protocol, with Scopus and Web of Science databases as references. The data of the registers was processed through bibliometric indicators. The final sample consisted of 46 records that met the selection criteria. The results point to a considerable increase in film studies since the mid-2010s, as well as emerging research trends inspired by Humanities such as aesth...

Objective: Mining activity represents one of the most hazardous occupations related to health, with 8% of fatal injuries concentrated in this sector worldwide. Thus, it is crucial to timely identify the factors involved in such injuries. We aimed to explore the sociodemographic and occupational/organisational factors associated with injuries, causative agents and subsequent disabilities and fatality of workers exposed to occupational injuries in the mining sector. Design: A secondary scoping review was conducted following the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines. Data sources: Scopus, Embase, Virtual Health Library, SciELO and PubMed databases were searched in February 2022 and updated in October 2023. The protocol was developed in April 2022. Eligibility criteria for selecting studies: We included observational studies published within the last 13 years (2010–2022) which provided inform...

Plagiarism is a serious, yet widespread type of research misconduct, and is often neglected in developing countries. Despite its far-reaching implications, plagiarism is poorly acknowledged and discussed in the academic setting, and insufficient evidence exists in Latin America and developing countries to inform the development of preventive strategies. In this context, we present a longitudinal case study of seven instances of plagiarism and cheating arising in four consecutive classes (2011–2014) of an Epidemiology Masters’ program in Lima, Peru, and describe the implementation and outcomes of a multifaceted, “zero-tolerance” policy aimed at introducing research integrity. Two cases involved cheating in graded assignments, and five cases correspond to plagiarism in the thesis protocol. Cases revealed poor awareness and high tolerance to plagiarism, poor academic performance, an...

The present study conducted a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) on the influence of Big Data in the definition of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in logistics and their impact on customer satisfaction. The reviewed literature showed numerous studies on the use of Big Data in logistics; however, there were few efforts that synthesized aspects such as defined KPIs, developed methods, and implemented tools. The objective was to explore and analyze how Big Data supported the definition of logistics KPIs and its influence on customer satisfaction. The methodology encompassed three stages: planning, implementation, and results, following Kitchenham's approach. A review protocol was established with key research questions and inclusion and exclusion criteria. Systematic searches were conducted in relevant databases, and pertinent studies were selected. The results revealed that the definitio...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major global public health problem. It is a leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents worldwide. Although increased intracranial pressure (ICP) is common and associated with death and poor outcome after pediatric TBI, the efficacy of current ICP-based management remains controversial. We intend to provide Class I evidence testing the efficacy of a protocol based on current ICP monitor-based management vs care based on imaging and clinical examination without ICP monitoring in pediatric severe TBI. METHODS: A phase III, multicenter, parallel-group, randomized superiority trial performed in intensive care units in Central and South America to determine the impact on 6-month outcome of children aged 1-12 years with severe TBI (age-Appropriate Glasgow Coma Scale score ?8) randomized to ICP-based or non-ICP-b...
