Tephritidae fruit flies are among the most damaging pests of fruit crops worldwide Ceratitis capitata Wiedemann, for instance, can infest more than 250 fruit and vegetable crop species, and constitutes the main phytosanitary restrict for export purposes. The investigation was carried out in a SENASA’s Production Center of Sterile Fruit Flies and PIMU’s laboratory; it was supervised by an OIEA’s irradiation expert. This research comprised two stages: 1) Determine the minimum irradiation dose to avoid emergence of fruit fly adults (bioassay test), and 2) Evaluate 30 000 individuals having been exposed to the minimum effective dose to provide statistically reliable data (confirmatory test). It was confirmed that no adult emergence occurred at 0,1 kGy, and no significant differences were found between treated and non-treated mangoes when both chemical and organoleptic tests were applie...

Despite various existing asset management methodologies, there are still many areas where they are yet to be implemented. This is mainly because they are not customized methodologies and their implementation, in many cases, generates several theoretical-practical gaps and inconsistencies, which hinder their application. Therefore, we must continue to deepen our understanding of these methodologies’ application within several contexts, especially in the circumstances wherein machinery plays an important role in achieving machinery-intensive process deliverables. Accordingly, this study discusses a failure management case focusing on the machinery employed in the gold mill tailing treatment process at a gold mining process plant. This study was conducted using three of the most renowned asset management methodologies, i.e., reliability-centered maintenance (RCM), total productive mainten...

PURPOSE: Infections are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). In Latin America, data on infectious complications in this patient population are lacking. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study of patients with newly diagnosed MM (NDMM) in seven Latin American countries between June 2019 and May 2020. Patients with active disease, on active therapy, and with a follow-up of 6 months from the time of diagnosis were included. Our primary end point was the number of infectious events that required hospitalization for ≥ 24 hours. RESULTS: Of 248 patients with NDMM, 89 (35.9%) had infectious complications (113 infectious events), the majority (67.3%) within the first 3 months from diagnosis. The most common sites of infection were respiratory (38%) and urinary tract (31%). The microbial agent was identified in 57.5% of patients with gr...

PURPOSE: Waldenstrom Macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare lymphoma with distinct clinical features, and data from Latin American patients are lacking. Therefore, we aim to investigate the clinical, therapy, and outcome patterns of WM in Latin America. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients with WM diagnosed between 1991 and 2019 from 24 centers in seven Latin American countries. The study outcomes were overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS: We identified 159 cases (median age 67 years, male 62%). Most patients (95%) were symptomatic at diagnosis. The International Prognostic Scoring System for WM (IPSSWM) at diagnosis was available in 141 (89%) patients (high-risk 40%, intermediate-risk 37%, and low-risk 23%). Twenty-seven (17%) patients were tested for MYD88L265P, with 89% (n = 24 of 27) carrying the mutation. First-line and second-line therapies were adm...

Introduction: POEMS syndrome is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome caused by an underlying plasma cell disorder. The acronym refers to the following features: polyradiculoneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal paraproteinemia, and skin changes. Methods: The study was conducted at 24 hematological centers across 8 Latin-American countries. The study included a total of 46 patients {median age was 52 years (interquartile range [IQR]: 42 61.5), 30 males and 16 females} fulfilling the POEMS syndrome criteria diagnosed over a period of 12 years (January 1, 2011, through July 31, 2023). Epidemiological and clinical data were collected in an ad hoc database sent to the members of GELAMM, as well as the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Kaplan-Meier estimates. Results: All patients had polyneuropathy and monoclonal gammopathy; 89% had bone marrow plasma cell infiltration, 33% had sclerotic b...

PURPOSEMultiple myeloma (MM) is a highly heterogeneous, incurable disease most frequently diagnosed in the elderly. Therefore, data on clinical characteristics and outcomes in the very young population are scarce.PATIENTS AND METHODSWe analyzed clinical characteristics, response to treatment, and survival in 103 patients with newly diagnosed MM age 40 years or younger compared with 256 patients age 41-50 years and 957 patients age 51 years or older.RESULTSThere were no statistical differences in sex, isotype, International Scoring System, renal involvement, hypercalcemia, anemia, dialysis, bony lesions, extramedullary disease, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The most used regimen in young patients was cyclophosphamide, bortezomib, dexamethasone, followed by cyclophosphamide, thalidomide, dexamethasone and bortezomib, thalidomide, dexamethasone. Of the patients age 40 years or younger, o...

Beams of neutrinos have been proposed as a vehicle for communications under unusual circumstances, such as direct point-to-point global communication, communication with submarines, secure communications and interstellar communication. We report on the performance of a low-rate communications link established using the NuMI beam line and the MINERvA detector at Fermilab. The link achieved a decoded data rate of 0.1 bits/sec with a bit error rate of 1% over a distance of 1.035 km, including 240 m of earth.

The skin is the largest organ of the body that protects it from the external environment. High- frequency ultra sound (HF-US) has been used to visualize the skin in depth and to diagnose some pathologies in dermatological applications. Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) includes several techniques that provide values of particular physical properties. In this thesis work, three QUS parameters are explained and used to characterize healthy skin through HF-US: attenuation coefficient slope (ACS), backscatter coefficient (BSC) and shear wave speed (SWS). They were estimated with the regularized spectral-log difference (RSLD) method, the reference phan- tom method, and the crawling wave sonoelastography method, respectively. All the three parameters were assessed in phantoms, ex vivo and in vivo skin. In calibrated phantoms, RSLD showed a reduc- tion of up to 93% of the standard deviation concern...
