Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic is a colossal challenge for global health; nonetheless, specific subgroups face considerably higher risks for infection and mortality. Among patients with malignant diseases, those with hematologic neoplasms are at a higher risk for poor outcomes. The objective of this study was to register treatment modifications associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and their short-term consequences in Latin America. Methods: Multicenter, prospective, observational, cohort study including patients older than 14 years from 14 centers in four countries (Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Panama) who had a confirmed diagnosis of acute leukemia, and who were undergoing active treatment since the first COVID-19 case in each country until the cutoff on July 15, 2020.Results: We recruited 635 patients. Treatment modifications because of the COVID-19 pandemic were reported in 40.8% of c...

650 horses (Equus caballus Linnaeus, 1758), race Thoroughbred Race, 300 male and 350 female were studied, all of two years old, from breeding centers in the central region of Venezuela by stool by McMaster flotation technique (Willis-Molloy) during the quarantine period 2010 at the Racetrack "La Rinconada" Caracas, Venezuela. Parasitological study revealed the presence of Strongyle eggs in 477 horses (73%), Parascaris equorum (Goeze, 1782) eggs in 23 (4%) and 150 (23%) were negative. The presence of strongylos remained within the range of 550-1850 HPG (Eggs per g of stool), while P. equorum was 250-600 HPG. These results suggestive an inadequate health plan and specifically to control parasites. It is possible the parasite resistance to conventional use, but this may be associated with climate changes that alter the life cycle of these parasites. In conclusion, we reported the presence o...

By using the criterions of sensibility of IUPAC, we had determinad the sensibility far chromic (III) and (VI) from solution of its differents salts. We found that ion chromic (VI) in the form ion chromate is much sensible than chromic (III).

Applying the method of pressure swing distillation (PSD) we obtained (97 % v/v) ethanol starting from 95 % v/v ethanol, which shows that the ethanol-water azeotrope has been broken in this study. Experimental work to achieve the final product was carried out operating !he column in two stages or modes, these being: (1) Low pressure distillation (LPD), and (2) High pressure distillation (HPO). In the first operating mode, a low degree industrial alcohol (80 % v/v ethanol) is fed to a bench scale distillation column packed with Mellapack structure, where (95 % v/v) ethanol is obtained, working at atmospheric pressure. Then product collected in !he first stage is fed to the reboiler, and !he HPD process takes place to get 97 % (v/v) ethanol. Here we have shown that it is possible to perform the pressure swing using an auxiliary engineered device, instead of using a second distillation colum...

Forest census allows getting precise data for logging planning and elaboration of the forest management plan. Species identification blunders carry inadequate forest management plans and high risks inside forest concessions. Hence, an identification protocol prevents the exploitation of non-commercial or endangered timber species. The current Peruvian legislation allows the incorporation of non-technical experts, called “materos”, during the identification. Materos use common names given by the folklore and traditions of their communities instead of formal ones, which generally lead to misclassifications. In the real world, logging companies hire materos instead of botanists due to cost/time limitations. Given such a motivation, we explore an end-to-end software solution to automatize the species identification. This paper introduces the Peruvian Amazon Forestry Dataset, which includ...

Biodiesel is produced in a vertical photobioreactor using a Botryococcus braunii bubbling carbon dioxide in natural conditions of solar irradiation. The technique of metabolic control is applied in the growth of microalgae producing up to 14 g / L and 29% lipid of dry biomass. The oil is extracted with n-hexane and then by transesterification the biodiesel is obtained with a calorific value of 40 MJ/kg, a density of 0.86 kg/L and a viscosity of 5.2 × 10(-4) Pa s (at 40 °C)

Background: Recent data about clinical features, triggers and management of anaphylaxis in Latin America is lacking. Objective: To provide updated and extended data on anaphylaxis in this region. Method: An online questionnaire was used, with 67 allergy units involved from 12 Latin-American countries and Spain. Among data recorded, demographic information, clinical features, severity, triggering agents, and treatment were received. Results: Eight hundred and seventeen anaphylactic reactions were recorded. No difference in severity, regardless of pre-existing allergy or asthma history was found. Drug induced anaphylaxis (DIA) was most frequent (40.6%), followed by food induced anaphylaxis (FIA) (32.9%) and venom induced anaphylaxis (VIA) (12%). FIA and VIA were more common in children-adolescents. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and beta-lactam antibiotics (BLA) were the mo...

PURPOSEMultiple myeloma (MM) is a highly heterogeneous, incurable disease most frequently diagnosed in the elderly. Therefore, data on clinical characteristics and outcomes in the very young population are scarce.PATIENTS AND METHODSWe analyzed clinical characteristics, response to treatment, and survival in 103 patients with newly diagnosed MM age 40 years or younger compared with 256 patients age 41-50 years and 957 patients age 51 years or older.RESULTSThere were no statistical differences in sex, isotype, International Scoring System, renal involvement, hypercalcemia, anemia, dialysis, bony lesions, extramedullary disease, and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). The most used regimen in young patients was cyclophosphamide, bortezomib, dexamethasone, followed by cyclophosphamide, thalidomide, dexamethasone and bortezomib, thalidomide, dexamethasone. Of the patients age 40 years or younger, o...

B A C K G R O U N D: The aim of these clinical standards is to aid the diagnosis and management of asthma in low-resource settings in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). M E T H O D S: A panel of 52 experts in the field of asthma in LMICs participated in a two-stage Delphi process to establish and reach a consensus on the clinical standards. R E S U L T S: Eighteen clinical standards were defined: Standard 1, Every individual with symptoms and signs compatible with asthma should undergo a clinical assessment; Standard 2, In individuals (>6 years) with a clinical assessment supportive of a diagnosis of asthma, a hand-held spirometry measurement should be used to confirm variable expiratory airflow limitation by demonstrating an acute response to a bronchodilator; Standard 3, Pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry should be performed in individuals (>6 years) to support diagnosis be...
