Helminths are a group of invertebrates of major scientific interest due to their high impact on public health and the diverse evolutionary histories that some of its members have followed in order to adapt to the parasitic lifestyle. In the Neotropical region, though, helminth research has been traditionally associated with their effect on public health. This topic awaits more reflection and political support for its beneficial implementation, especially in rural zones where the prevalence of infection by helminth parasites in humans can be very high (Cabrera, 2003).

Soil contaminated with helminth parasites of animals can pose risks of zoonoses to humans. It is important to determine the transmission dynamics of embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis (Werner, 1782). The aim of this study was to evaluate soil contamination by T. canis eggs in public parks in the district of Santiago de Surco, Lima, Peru in 2007 and 2008. The study was descriptive, longitudinal and comparative. Soil samples were evaluated in November-2007 (spring, n = 39), June-2008 (autumn, n = 37) and November-2008 (spring, n = 41); a total of 117 samples of soil (n = 84) and grass (n = 33) from 51 public parks representing the district of Santiago de Surco, Lima, Peru. At each site we measured the area of the park, collecting between 1 to 1.5 kg of soil sample into five equidistant points (four laterals and one central) at a depth of 5 cm. The samples were stored at room temperature fo...

Spotted Butterfish Stromateus stellatus (Cuvier, 1829) is a pelagic species that lives on the continental shelf where it forms small schools. Its geographic distribution includes mainly Ecuador, Peru and Chile, and further south in South America. Eighty specimens of S. stellatus were obtained from the coastal zone of Chorrillos, Lima, Peru between December, 2008 and September, 2009 to assess the community ecology of parasitic fauna. Of the tested fish, 51 were females and 29 were males. The fish showed a mean total length of 16.5 ± 1.8 cm (12 cm to 22.5 cm). Metazoan parasites were collected and plotted using standard parasitological procedures. The parasite assemblage presented a higher percentage of internal parasites (97.2%) compared to ectoparasites. The mean parasite species richness was 0.4 ± 0.6 (0.0 to 3.0). Fifty-four hosts (67.5%) were infected and 26 hosts (32.5%) were infec...

Labrisomus philippii (Steindachner, 1866) is a marine fish species of intertidal-subtidal rocky bottom with distribution on the coast of Peru and Chile. 124 specimens of L. philippii were acquired in the Chorrillos Fishmarket, Lima, Peru, between May to September 2008 to evaluate parasitefauna infracommunities. Fish showed a mean length of 19.1 cm (10 cm to 24.5 cm). Parasites were collected and counted employing conventional techniques. Parasite assemblages were higher for endoparasite (99.3%) than ectoparasites abundance (0.70%). The mean parasite species richness as 1.1 (0-5). Forty-seven hosts were not parasited and seventy-seven hosts showed infection at least with one parasite specie. Eight parasites with the following prevalence and mean abundance were found: an unidentified mixosporea (7.2%; 0.1±0.5), the copepod Acanthochondria syciasis (Kroyer, 1863) (4%; 0.04±0.2), three tre...

Pathological lesions caused by acanthocephalans in marine birds are still little known. In this sense, a study of the pathological lesions in the gray gull (Leucophaeus modestus) (Tschudi, 1843) caused by theacanthocephalan Profilicollis altmani (Perry, 1942) Van Cleave, 1947 is presented. Gross lesions weremainly thickening of the intestinal wall in the area of deep penetration by the worm, with white serosalnodules. Microscopically was observed penetration from the parasite's anterior end in the villi andsubmucosa, surrounded by severe caseous necrosis and an inflammatory reaction composed by a moderate number of eosinophils and some multinucleated giant cells, mononuclear cells and peripherally a dense fibrous and vascularized connective tissue. Furthermore, the area between the proboscis and the necrotic tissue presented a number of bacilli basophilic bacteria. Additionally, in adjac...

A fecal parasitological study of the population performing artisanal fishing of Terminal Pesquero de Chorrillos (Fishing Terminal of Chorrillos), Province of Lima, Peru, was conducted aiming at determining the prevalence of endoparasites and their relationship with fishing activity. Fecal samples were examined by the Ritchie's Method and the Spontaneous Sedimentation in Tube Technique. The prevalence of endoparasites was 68%. The only pathogenic protozoa found was Giardia intestinalis (syn. G. lamblia) (Lambl, 1859) Kofoid & Christiansen, 1915 with a 16% prevalence. The helminth parasites found included Hymenolepis nana (Culbertson, 1940) and Ascaris lumbricoides (Linnaeus, 1758), both with a 4% prevalence. Commensal parasites found included Endolimax nana (Wenyon & O´Connor, 1917) at a prevalence reaching 40%, followed by Entamoeba coli (Grassi, 1879) with 28% and finally Iod...
