Pathological lesions caused by acanthocephalans in marine birds are still little known. In this sense, a study of the pathological lesions in the gray gull (Leucophaeus modestus) (Tschudi, 1843) caused by theacanthocephalan Profilicollis altmani (Perry, 1942) Van Cleave, 1947 is presented. Gross lesions weremainly thickening of the intestinal wall in the area of deep penetration by the worm, with white serosalnodules. Microscopically was observed penetration from the parasite's anterior end in the villi andsubmucosa, surrounded by severe caseous necrosis and an inflammatory reaction composed by a moderate number of eosinophils and some multinucleated giant cells, mononuclear cells and peripherally a dense fibrous and vascularized connective tissue. Furthermore, the area between the proboscis and the necrotic tissue presented a number of bacilli basophilic bacteria. Additionally, in adjac...

Two species of ectoparasites were collected from a South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens) found stranded on the beaches of Chorrillos in Lima, Peru. The ectoparasites were identified as Antarctophthirus microchir (Phthiraptera) and Orthohalarachne attenuata (Acari). Some morphological characteristics are described in this report. The finding of these ectoparasites is the first records in Peru.

The study aimed to identify and determine the prevalence of zoonotic gastrointestinal helminths present in rodents (Rattus spp) in three environments (pig farms, zoo and food markets) of Lima, Peru and estimate the association between the presence of helminths and the variables place of origin, species, age and sex. A total of 245 rodents (Rattus rattus and Rattus norvergicus) were captured alive using live trap cages and were subsequently euthanized. Skulls, skin, teeth and morphometric parameters were used for taxonomic classification of species. Stomach and small and large intestine were collected. The helminths found were placed in 70% alcohol and selected tissues were preserved in 10% formalin. The prevalence of gastrointestinal helminths in rats was 72.2% whereas the prevalence of zoonotic helminth was 46.5%. Four species of zoonotic importance were found: Raillietina demerariensis...

The study aimed to determine the prevalence of zoonotic liver helminths and their histopathological characterization in rodents (Rattus spp.) from a zoo, pig farms and food markets in Lima, Perú. The morphometric parameters of each rodent were recorded to determine the age and identify the species, computing a total of 267 animals. The handling and the capture methodology were carried out according to the biosafety standards established by the Center for Infectious Diseases and Prevention of Atlanta. Livers were macroscopically evaluated for lesions. For diagnostic confirmation by histopathology, samples were taken from the right lateral lobe of all the livers together with other areas that showed damage in search of tissue lesions and inflammatory response related to the presence of the parasites. The pathological analysis determined a prevalence of 3.74% of Cysticercus fasciolaris in ...

The aim of this study was to determine the presence of antibodies against Toxoplasma. gondii in wild animals of the orders Carnivora, Primates, Perissodactyla, Cetartiodactyla and Rodentia in the zoo of the Patronato del Parque de las Leyendas, Lima, Peru, as well as to identify the risk factors associated to toxoplasmosis, establishing the role in the transmission of the parasite of domestic felines (Felis silvestris f. catus) and rodents of the genus Rattus running free in the zoo. Blood samples were taken from 332 animals (Carnivora: 75, Primates: 71, Perissodactyla: 32, Cetartiodactyla: 134, Rodentia: 20); as well as in 41 domestic felines and 124 rodents of the genus Rattus. In addition, samples of brain, heart, liver and diaphragm from the rodents for histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis. Serum samples were analysed by indirect hemagglutination (1:64 - 1: 2048), consi...
