The aim of this study was to determine the contamination of public parks of La Molina district in Lima with eggs of Toxocara spp and its relationship with the categorization of the parks (unfriendly, friendly and not very friendly) within the Health Surveillance Programme of Parks and Gardens, prepared by the Department of Food Hygiene and Zoonoses of DIGESA - Ministry of Health (MINSA). The study was of descriptive type, evaluating 131 public parks between August 2014 and April 2016. Representative samples of soil and grass (1-2 kg) per park were collected using the double W technique and analysed by the techniques of sedimentation and flotation with supersaturated NaCl solution. The presence of at least one Toxocara spp egg in the sample was considered positive. The categorization of the parks was carried out by La Molina Municipality staff, based on three criteria (adequate infrastruc...

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Giardia spp in rodents (Rattus rattus and Rattus norvegicus) captured in a zoo in Metropolitan Lima, as well as the possible association between the presence of the parasite with the species, sex and age of the rats. A total of 127 rodents (Rattus spp) were captured between February 2013 and August 2016 by using live capture traps "Tomahawk". The handling of the rodents and the collection of the samples complied with biosafety standards and processing standards in accordance with the protocols of the Center for Infectious Diseases and Prevention of Atlanta (CDC). Samples of the small intestine and posterior digestive tract (caecum, colon and rectum) were collected and preserved with 10% formaldehyde. The modified Ritchie technique was used, considering as a positive sample the presence of some parasitic form of Giardia spp (trophoz...

The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in goats from eight provinces of the Piura region, Peru. In total, 361 sera were analysed with the commercial ID Screen Neospora caninum Competition ELISA kit for the detection of anti-N. caninum IgG antibodies. A general seroprevalence of 3.32% (95% CI 1.47-5.17) was found. The province of Morropón presented the highest frequency with 8.11% (95% CI 0-16.91) and the goats of Huancabamba, Paita, Sechura and Talara were seronegative. The animals seropositive to N. caninum were adults (>1 year) and were living at an altitude ≤500 meters above sea level.

The study aimed to determine the prevalence of zoonotic liver helminths and their histopathological characterization in rodents (Rattus spp.) from a zoo, pig farms and food markets in Lima, Perú. The morphometric parameters of each rodent were recorded to determine the age and identify the species, computing a total of 267 animals. The handling and the capture methodology were carried out according to the biosafety standards established by the Center for Infectious Diseases and Prevention of Atlanta. Livers were macroscopically evaluated for lesions. For diagnostic confirmation by histopathology, samples were taken from the right lateral lobe of all the livers together with other areas that showed damage in search of tissue lesions and inflammatory response related to the presence of the parasites. The pathological analysis determined a prevalence of 3.74% of Cysticercus fasciolaris in ...
