La toxocariasis es una zoonosis de tipo parasitaria producida por un nemátodo del género Toxocara, un parásito zoonótico que infecta a perros y gatos. La infección humana se da al ingerir los huevos larvados presentes en lugares contaminados o directamente en perros o gatos parasitados. Una vez ingerido el huevo larvado por el humano, este migra a diversos órganos del cuerpo, pero no llega a desarrollar la fase adulta. La infección por larvas, dependiendo de la especie de parásito y su ubicación, puede producir: larva migrante cutánea, larva migrante visceral, larva migrante ocular y larva migrante neural. La infección por larvas de Toxocara canis produce larva migrante visceral y ocular. La seroprevalencia humana es alta en los grupos más susceptibles como los niños o los criadores de mascotas.
