This research focused on the synthesis of a functional alginate-based material via chemical modification processes with two steps: oxidation and reductive amination. In previous alginate functionalization with a target molecule such as cysteine, the starting material was purified and characterized by UV-Vis,1 H-NMR and HSQC. Additionally, the application of FT-IR techniques during each step of alginate functionalization was very useful, since new bands and spiked signals around the pyranose ring (1200–1000 cm−1) and anomeric region (1000–750 cm−1) region were identified by a second derivative. Additionally, the presence of C1-H1 of β-D-mannuronic acid residue as well as C1-H1 of α-L-guluronic acid residue was observed in the FT-IR spectra, including a band at 858 cm−1 with characteristics of the N-H moiety from cysteine. The possibility of attaching cysteine molecules to an a...

Transportation is the sector with the highest Greenhouse Gasses (GHG) emissions in Peru, and it is almost completely dependent on fossil energy resources. For the present analysis, we take into account carbon emissions during the production of electricity which may serve as a basis for understanding the carbon footprint (CF) of the alternatives that may be derived from the use of electrical vehicles. Based on the estimated values of emissions according to the type of electricity generation source (renewable or thermal), we have created scenarios to calculate emissions under the condition of electromobility. The CF of the combustion vehicle is 180 gCO2eq/pas-km, while the CF of electric vehicles with renewable energy, national electricity and fossil electricity are 12, 89 and 140 gCO2eq/pas-km respectively. The reduction of CO2 emissions eq. with renewable electrical energy is 93%, while ...

Sensing drug substances by nanostructures are very important in accordance with the management of targeted drug delivery processes and drug substances detections. Boron nitride (BN), aluminum nitride (AlN), and gallium nitride (GaN) decorated carbon cage (BN-C, AlN-C, and GaN-C) scaffolds were assessed towards sensing the thiamazole (TMZ) drug through the wB97XD/6–31 + G* level of density functional theory (DFT) computations. The singular models were optimized and their combinations to each other were stabilized to obtain the interacting TMZ@Scaffold bimolecular complexes and their corresponding features. The results indicated the existence of non-covalent physical interactions between the substances and their electronic features indicated possibility of sensing function for the investigated scaffolds. Based on the variations of values of adsorption energy and energy gap, the features ...

A sensor based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) was developed for determination of 3-(3,4-Dichlorophenyl)-1,1- dimethylurea (diuron). The MIP were synthesized by free radical polymerization in wich diuron acted as template, methacrylic acid (MAA) acted as functional monomer and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) acted as crosslinker. For construction of the sensor, glassy carbon electrode was modified with Nafion® and MIP/NIP (non imprinted polymer) to see the contribution of MIP, as a film, in the diuron recognition. Differential Pulse Voltammetry was used to the quantification of diuron in a range of response 0.4 - 1.2 V in a PBS (pH=8). All parameters affecting the sensor were optimized. The sensor showed a linear response from 1.00x10-5 to 9.616x10-5 M in PBS 0.1 M (pH=8). The limit of detection was 0.58x10-5 mol L-1. The nanostructured sensor was prepared using carbon na...

This work describes an electrochemical sensor for the selective recognition and quantification of amoxicillin and a β-lactam antibiotic in real samples. This sensor consists of a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with mag-MIP (magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer), which was prepared by precipitation method via free radical using acrylamide (AAm) as functional monomer, N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) as a crosslinker, and potassium persulfate (KPS) as initiator, to functionalized magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic non-imprinted polymers (mag-NIP) were prepared using the same experimental procedure without analyte and used for the preparation of a CPE for comparative studies. The morphological, structural, and electrochemical characteristics of the nanostructured material were evaluated using Field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), Transmission electron mi...

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is a widely used material in container manufacturing, particularly in bottle production. It is characterized by its low cost and widespread availability. However, its improper disposal has significantly exacerbated global plastic pollution. For instance, less than 50% of plastic bottles are recycled. Moreover, studies indicate that this issue has led to a significant accumulation of plastic waste in the oceans, which continues to grow annually and could be considered floating islands of debris. This study proposes replacing PET with polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer with suitable properties for bottle production. PLA also has a shorter decomposition time compared to PET, contributing to the reduction of carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. The research methodology included a diagnostic phase to define objectives, i...

High-surface-area carbon-based capacitors exhibit significant advantages relative to conventional graphite-based systems, such as high power density, low weight, and mechanical flexibility. In this work, novel porous carbon-based electrodes were obtained from commercial cotton fibers (CFs) impregnated with graphene oxide (GO) at different dipping times. A subsequent thermal treatment under inert atmosphere conditions enables the synthesis of electrodes based on reduced GO (RGO) supported on carbon fibers. Those synthetized with 15 min and 30 min of dipping time displayed high specific capacitance given their optimal micro-/ mesoporosity ratio. Particularly, the RGO/CCF15A supercapacitor reports a remarkable specific capacitance of 74.1 F g−1 at 0.2 A g−1 and a high cycling stability with a 97.7% capacitive retention, making this electrode a promising candidate for supercapacitor desi...

This research aims to determine the effect of activated carbon obtained from cocoa husks (Theobroma cacao L.) on the adsorption of iron (II) present in water of an aquifer for human consumption. Charcoal was prepared at different carbonization temperatures (500, 600 and 700 °C) for 30 minutes and activated with phosphoric acid in the proportions of 1:1. Iron (II) adsorption was determined as a function of variations in mixing speed, contact time, charcoal dosage and stirring speed. It was determined that, over the range considered, agitation speeds had no significant effect on the percentage of iron (II) removal, being the dose of activated carbon and temperature, the most influential variables. The water samples had an initial iron concentration of 3.15 mg/L and 4 mg/L. The best iron (II) adsorption result was obtained with activated carbon at the carbonization temperature of 700 °C, ...

The current understanding of acid-base physiology states that all changes in the blood, pH, as well as variations in a healthy state and during disease occur through changes in 3 variables: (a) Carbon dioxide (CO2), (b) electrolyte relative concentration, and (c) weak acid concentration. Internal milieu and acid-base disturbances generate alterations inthree areas: a) direct damage in multiple organs and systems, (b) a compensatory response to the disturbance, which may be suitable or incomplete, and (c) functional alterations in immune cells. The classically used Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for the classification of acid-base disorders in respiratory (abnormal CO2) and metabolic (abnormalbicarbonate) and for the “anion gap” calculation, but this equilibrium  equation assumes that albumin and phosphate concentrations are very close to normal, a condition that is not necessari...
