This paper examines whether compliance with COVID-19 mitigation measures is motivated by wanting to save lives or save the economy (or both), and which implications this carries to fight the pandemic. National representative samples were collected from 24 countries (N = 25,435). The main predictors were (1) perceived risk to contract coronavirus, (2) perceived risk to suffer economic losses due to coronavirus, and (3) their interaction effect. Individual and country-level variables were added as covariates in multilevel regression models. We examined compliance with various preventive health behaviors and support for strict containment policies. Results show that perceived economic risk consistently predicted mitigation behavior and policy support—and its effects were positive. Perceived health risk had mixed effects. Only two significant interactions between health and economic risk w...

Entrepreneurial Intention is commonly attributed to the interaction of cultural values and attitude; however, cultural values vary according to the context in which they are developed. The following study intends to show how Subjective Norms affect intentions of self-employment, as both, a direct factor and mediated through attitudinal values: Perceived Behavioral Control and Desirability, within a cross-cultural framework. A sample of 736 students from four different countries: Spain, Portugal, Mexico and India were used. Results yielded a direct relationship between Subjective Norm and Intention in all countries, except India. When mediated through attitude, the relation becomes stronger, even more when it’s through Desirability, except in Portugal, which the relationship is stronger directly through Social Norms. India does not show a relationship between Perceived Behavioral Contro...

Peru is the South American country that suffers anaemia the most (matching only Guyana) according to the WHO. It affects more than 50% of preschool children, 42% of pregnant women and 40% of non-pregnant women of reproductive age. These prevalence levels put Peru in a similar situation to most African countries. In spite of the important role of anaemia in Peruvian society, the magnitude of the problem has not been acknowledged in its consequences and costs for the country. Furthermore, the Peruvian state has not developed a systematic policy for fighting anaemia. The aim of this study is to identify and estimate the economic costs for the Peruvian state and economy caused by the current prevalence of iron-deficiency anaemia among adults; to estimate the future economic costs for the Peruvian economy of the current prevalence of anaemia among children and to estimate the costs incurred b...

As in other developing countries, Peru’s demographic transition is well underway. Concurrently, women’s labor market participation and employment rates have substantially increased. In this paper we estimate the causal effect that the reduction in fertility rates has on women’s employment using instrumental variables already tested in developed countries—twins in the first birth and the sex composition of the two oldest children. We also analyze the heterogeneity of the effects along three lines: marriage status of the mother, age of the first (second) child, and mother’s level of education. We find strong effects of fertility. According to our results, 27 percent of the total increase in women’s rate of employment between 1993 and 2007 can be attributed to the reduction in fertility rates. This is a considerable magnitude, more than four times as large as the estimate for US...

The purpose of this study is to determine whether the trade liberalization process that Peru began around 2008 has influenced labor demand in line with the expectations of neoclassical theory. Considering Peru’s specificities, it would be anticipated that: 1) employment would increase due to the rise in production and the surge in labor intensity, 2) there would be a redistribution of resources from less competitive sectors to those where Peru has comparative advantages, and 3) there would be a higher generation of employment in sectors predominantly requiring unskilled labor. Using data from the BCRP and Electronic Payroll, it was observed that from 2008 to 2019, there was an increase both of exports and imports with their effects on the production. However, in certain manufacturing areas, especially those aimed at exportation, a stronger correlation between product and employment was...

While there is evidence that ENSO activity will increase in association with the increased vertical stratification due to global warming, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here we investigate this issue using the simulations of the NCAR Community Earth System Model Large Ensemble (CESM-LE) Project focusing on strong El Niño events of the Eastern Pacific (EP) that can be associated to flooding in Northern and Central Peru. It is shown that, in the warmer climate, the duration of strong EP El Niño events peaking in boreal winter is extended by two months, which results in significantly more events peaking in February–March–April (FMA), the season when the climatological Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone is at its southernmost location. This larger persistence of strong EP events is interpreted as resulting from both a stronger recharge process and a more effective thermocline f...

This article employs a family of VAR models with time-varying parameters and stochastic volatility (TVP-VAR-SV) to estimate the impact of external financial uncertainty shocks on a set of macroeconomic variables in Peru for the period from 1996Q1 to 2022Q4. The main findings can be summarized as follows: (i) a simple VAR model with stochastic volatility is sufficient to capture uncertainty dynamics compared to TVP-VAR alternatives; (ii) uncertainty shocks have a negative and significant impact on private investment growth in the medium and long term; (iii) the impact on private investment growth is three times greater than that on GDP growth; (iv) uncertainty shocks behave like aggregate supply shocks, leading to an increase in the inflation rate; and (v) uncertainty shocks have stronger effects in scenarios characterized by unfavorable financial conditions.

This paper examines the evolution of the inflation uncertainty-inflation relationship in seven Latin American countries and the G7 from Q1 1948 to Q4 2023, using the time-varying parameter stochastic volatility in mean (TVP-SVM) model of Chan (2017) and its extension incorporating time-varying mixture innovations (TVP-SVM-TVMI) from Hou (2020). The key findings are as follows: (i) the TVP-SVM model is preferred in 8 out of 14 countries; (ii) inflation uncertainty has been higher in Latin America than in the G7, particularly during the 1980s "lost decade"; (iii) log-inflation uncertainty is more persistent in Latin America; (iv) there is no evidence supporting the hypothesis of Friedman (1977) in any of the countries analyzed; (v) the Cukierman-Meltzer hypothesis (1986) holds, as the uncertainty-inflation relationship is positive and time-varying in all countries; (vi) this relationship i...

Objective: We aim to provide early evidence of mental distress and its associated predictors among adults one month into the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil. Methods: We conducted an online survey of 638 adults in Brazil on March 25–28, 2020, about one month (32 days) cross-sectionally after the first COVID-19 case in South America was confirmed in São Paulo. The 638 adults were in 25 states out of the 26 Brazilian states, with the only exception being Roraima, the least populated state in the Amazon. Of all the participating adults, 24%, 20%, and 18% of them were located in Rio de Janeiro state, Santa Catarina state, and São Paulo state respectively. Results: In Brazil, 52% (332) of the sampled adults experienced mild or moderate distress, and 18.8% (120) suffered severe distress. Adults who were female, younger, more educated, and exercised less reported higher levels of distress. Each i...

Background:Previous studies have shown that multimorbidity is a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction (CD).Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and hypertension (HT) are very common risk factors. The association between multimorbidity due to both diseases and CD has been understudied in low and middle-income countries, in which the strength of the association might be stronger. Aim: To evaluate the association between multimorbidity due to T2DM and HT with CD among adults ≥50 years in Tumbes. Materials and methods: A secondary analysis of a population-based cross-sectional study was conducted. The exposure variable was the presence of both T2DM and HT, split into categories: without HT or T2DM, only T2DM, only HT, and with T2DM and HT; whereas CD was the outcome variable, defined as a score ≤26 in the Leganes Cognitive Test. Crude and adjusted generalized linear models were used to estimat...

The aim of this study was to analyze the psychometric properties of the Innovative Behavior Scale (IBS) among 227 Peruvian workers (51.982% male), aged between 22 and 76 years (M = 45.009; SD = 12.046). Content validity was assessed through expert judgment regarding item clarity and relevance, while internal structure was examined using confirmatory factor analysis. Additionally, measurement invariance analysis was conducted across gender and job position, and reliability estimates were obtained for both direct scores (alpha coefficient) and the construct (omega coefficient). Results show the clarity and relevance of IBS items and a stronger empirical support for the unidimensional model, as well as acceptable levels of invariance across gender and job positions. Furthermore, reliability estimates were found to be satisfactory across all measures. In conclusion, the IBS demonstrates adeq...

The recent outbreak of COVID-19 has been devastating for international tourism, adversely affecting destinations, organizations, and local communities. In particular, the crisis highlights the need for local communities reliant on rural tourism to enhance their resilience to the risks simultaneously generated by the pandemic and accelerating impacts of climate change. This is important as the effects of these hazards are intertwined and cannot be treated in isolation. We explore community responses and resilience through case study Quebrada Verde, Peru, a small rural community in the Andes Mountains. Specifically, we report on a qualitative examination involving in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus groups with key informants from the community, supplemented by relevant documentary analysis. Drawing on community resilience and social networks perspectives, we find that the commun...

The COVID-19 pandemic had a strong impact on mental health. Multiple studies report the alarming prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions due to the lockdown measures. Nevertheless, somatization has been an overlooked topic in current literature despite its strong relationship with most mental health conditions. The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of somatic symptoms and their associated factors in a sample of 3218 undergraduate students from Lima, Peru. A cross-sectional design was carried out. The prevalence of somatic symptoms was measured with the PHQ-15. As predictors of somatic symptom severity, we included psychopathological (depression, anxiety, and stress), psychological (perceived social support, resilience, satisfaction with life, and academic self-efficacy), and sociodemographic (e.g., age, sex, employment status, relationship status, ...
