The objective of this research was to look into the self-reported food consumption and wastage behavior in Brazil during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and the motivations to prevent this waste. The data were collected during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Brazil, May 2020, using a self-administered questionnaire with 60 questions on food consumption behavior and characterization of food waste behaviors. The target audience comprised Brazilian residents responsible for household food purchases; out of 489 responses, 458 were considered valid. The main findings reported that regarding consumption behavior, there are no significant differences in relation to gender, education, and age. The surveyed population preferred shopping in person, despite the recommendation of social distancing, and reported activities to avoid food waste. This behavior suggests the importance of information and...

This document seeks to highlight the relevance of innovation as a collective process, supported by the efforts of multiple actors – public, private and organized civil society – in the construction of a sustainable future. That is to say, innovation is analysed under an approach towards the construction of a sustainable future, based on a shared responsibility, which implies the expansion of governance mechanisms, with an inclusive view, that respects and values the environmental, social and economic dimensions. Therefore, we argue that thinking about advances in knowledge on this topic implies recognizing the relevance of the diversity of perspectives and joint decision-making and actions, in addition to recognizing the factors that facilitate or limit sustainable innovation. In this sense, this special issue of the GECONTEC Journal presents four selected papers from the Congress of...

The study analyzes the export performance of Peruvian KIBS in terms of their digitization, innovation results and knowledge bases differentiated by KIBS subsectors (technological, professional and creative). Different non-linear probability logit models were estimated using the 2019 National Business Survey. It was verified that, among digital capabilities, only those associated with productive uses of ICTs were found to have a positive relationship with export performance, as well as organizational innovation. However, when considering KIBS subsectors with different knowledge bases, it is observed that innovation has heterogeneous results on export performance regardless of the inclusion of digitization as a determinant. The findings suggest for policy design to consider that there are particular drivers of innovation in certain KIBS subsectors.

This study analyzes the impact of Venezuelan immigrants’ human-capital on their occupational choice in Peru, in terms of job qualifications. Cross-sectional data were sourced from the National Survey to the Venezuelan Population in Peru, using ordered probit models for 2018 and 2022. The results show that immigrants with university education or previous job experience are overeducated for jobs requiring university education, in the Peruvian labor market, for both years, since they are more likely to obtain jobs with technical education requirements, the intensity of the phenomenon reduced in 2022. The study verifies the Venezuelan immigrants’ overeducation in the Peruvian labor market.

Objective: We aim to provide early evidence of mental distress and its associated predictors among adults one month into the COVID-19 crisis in Brazil. Methods: We conducted an online survey of 638 adults in Brazil on March 25–28, 2020, about one month (32 days) cross-sectionally after the first COVID-19 case in South America was confirmed in São Paulo. The 638 adults were in 25 states out of the 26 Brazilian states, with the only exception being Roraima, the least populated state in the Amazon. Of all the participating adults, 24%, 20%, and 18% of them were located in Rio de Janeiro state, Santa Catarina state, and São Paulo state respectively. Results: In Brazil, 52% (332) of the sampled adults experienced mild or moderate distress, and 18.8% (120) suffered severe distress. Adults who were female, younger, more educated, and exercised less reported higher levels of distress. Each i...

The COVID-19 pandemic spread a multidimensional crisis of never-beforeexperienced proportions. Because of it, the situation in Brazil, which already had a scenario of great vulnerabilities and social disparities prior to the pandemic, was aggravated. The crisis and the fragility of the State's responses to the emerging demands were evidenced by the effort of the organized civil society to meet such demands. This study analyses the crisis management and co-production process during the COVID-19 pandemic in the city of Santa Maria-RS, in 2020, via the Mesa Brasil food bank program. The chosen research strategy was the case study. Data collection was carried out through documentary research, interviews and surveys with managers of participating institutions in the Mesa Brasil program. For the results, a content analysis technique was undertaken. The study allowed to conclude that crisis man...

The COVID-19 pandemic has represented a major global challenge. In Latin America, both Brazil and Peru reported the highest levels of impact in terms of proportional infection and death rates. Within this context, this study sought to compare food consumption and wastage patterns in Peruvian and Brazilian households. For these purposes, the authors conducted a quantitative research study based on a self-reported online survey submitted during the pandemic outbreak. Results revealed that the intention of reducing food wastage and implementing leftover management routines are related to the economic value of wasted food. In addition, in both countries, shopping lists are used as planning elements, and food purchases are influenced by on-sale products. Leftover management is also similar in both countries, and the expiration date on the label is the most commonly used criterion for consumin...

The concept of circular economy has recently emerged as a political goal (Gregson et al., 2015), in a context of rising resource prices and climate change. However, the idea is more often criticized, questioned than celebrated. In a circular economic model, waste becomes a resource to be recovered and revalued through recycling and reuse. In this context, five circular economy models are emerging and spreading rapidly in organizations, namely: circular supply chains, recovery and recycling, product life cycle extension, shared platforms and product as a service (Lacy and Rutqvist, 2015). However, companies looking to adopt these circular models will have to develop new business models at the expense of linear thinking (Sehnem et al., 2022). Such models help companies to improve differentiation, in reducing costs, in generating new revenues, in reducing risks as well as in reducing the im...
