OBJECTIVE: The absence of an universal classification for hyperthyroidisms (HT), give rise to inadequate interpretation of series and trials, and prevents decision making. We offer a tentative classification based on gammagrafic and functional findings. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical records from patients who underwent thyroidectomy in our Department since 1967 to 1997 were reviewed. Those with functional measurements of hyperthyroidism were considered. All were managed according to the same preestablished guidelines. RESULTS: HT was the surgical indication in 694 (27,1%) of the 2559 thyroidectomies. Based on gammagraphic studies, we classified HTs in: Parenchymatous Increased-Uptake, which could be Diffuse, Diffuse with Cold Nodules or Diffuse with at least one Nodule, and Nodular Increased-Uptake (Autonomous Functioning Thyroid Nodes [AFTN]), divided into Solitary AFTN or Toxic Adenoma...

The present article analyzes the importance of functional or program budgets in the public sector, as well as their implementation in Peru. In this context, the author defines functional budgets as a tool for public planning and management that allows for the allocation of public resources based on specific objectives, through the identification of programs and projects that can best contribute to achieving said objectives. On the other hand, it is established that the implementation of such program budgets in Peru has posed a series of challenges and difficulties due to the lack of serious plans, the broad powers of the legislative branch, as well as the null capacity for monitoring and the lack of continuous evaluation of programs by the government. Therefore, the question arises as to whether the program budget system really fits the reality of the country, or if it is rather a utopia...

This research focused on the synthesis of a functional alginate-based material via chemical modification processes with two steps: oxidation and reductive amination. In previous alginate functionalization with a target molecule such as cysteine, the starting material was purified and characterized by UV-Vis,1 H-NMR and HSQC. Additionally, the application of FT-IR techniques during each step of alginate functionalization was very useful, since new bands and spiked signals around the pyranose ring (1200–1000 cm−1) and anomeric region (1000–750 cm−1) region were identified by a second derivative. Additionally, the presence of C1-H1 of β-D-mannuronic acid residue as well as C1-H1 of α-L-guluronic acid residue was observed in the FT-IR spectra, including a band at 858 cm−1 with characteristics of the N-H moiety from cysteine. The possibility of attaching cysteine molecules to an a...

The objective of the research was to demonstrate that evidence-based learning as a didactic strategy influences the production of functional texts in university students. For this, the following methodology was used: quantitative approach, experimental level, quasi-experimental design. For data collection, the observation and survey technique was used: the instrument used was the rubric —differential semantic scale—, and knowledge test —measures the intellectual part—. To express the data, visual representations, tables and figures were used, obtained through the SPSS v.26 software. The statistical results allowed us to test the hypothesis through the Mann-Whitney U, indicating that the experimental group presents a better result in relation to the control group. In conclusion, evidence-based learning is an advantage for the development of the production of functional texts.

This study investigated consumers' perceptions of adding bee pollen to bread. An attitude questionnaire composed of 48 statements related to "general health," "light products," "natural products," "salty products," "food as a reward," "pleasure," and "food neophobia" was answered by the participants, who indicated their level of agreement with each statement according to a 5-point Likert scale, ranging from (1) "totally disagree" to (5) "totally agree." A check-all-that-apply (CATA) questionnaire was also employed to characterize 12 visual stimuli. The creation of stimuli was carried out using a factorial design, resulting in 12 images of bread. Three clusters of consumers were identified, each associating positive attributes with stimuli containing bee pollen, regardless of the health claim, while negative attributes were associated with stimuli without added pollen. The main positive d...

Arsenic contamination in water represents a serious public health issue worldwide, particularly in regions where natural or anthropogenic sources contribute to concentrations exceeding the maximum permissible limit of 0.01 mg/L established by the World Health Organization. This study evaluated the efficiency of a ceramic matrix made from red clay impregnated with ferric oxide (Fe₂O₃) for arsenic removal and water quality improvement. Water samples were collected from the Apacheta River and treated using a continuous-flow system with supports calcined at 800 °C. Arsenic concentrations were determined by spectrophotometry, and physicochemical parameters were analyzed before and after treatment. The results showed a reduction in arsenic concentration from 0.17 mg/L to 0.0053 mg/L, achieving a removal efficiency of 94.5 %, along with improvements in turbidity, electrical conductivity, a...

Cotton is the most widely used natural fiber for textiles but its innate capacity to absorb moisture, retain oxygen, and high specific surface area make it more prone to microbial contamination, becoming an appropriate medium for the growth of bacteria and fungi. In recent years, the incorporation of silver nanoparticles in textile products has been widely used due to their broad-spectrum antibacterial activity and low toxicity towards mammalian cells. The aim of the current study is to synthesize and characterize a nanocomposite based on silver nanoparticles and carboxymethyl chitosan (AgNPs-CMC), which was utilized to provide a functional finish to cotton fabric. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) to produce a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) image showed that the nanocomposite presents AgNPs with a 5–20 nm size. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed the ...

Edge detection is a digital image processing tool. It determines points in a digital image where light intensity suddenly changes. This process applies to a digital image which assumes some degree of uncertainty in the location and intensity of the pixel in the real image. In this work, we propose an edge detection model which consists in capturing this uncertainty in terms of interval images. Then we apply interval-valued fuzzy morphology to calculate the interval-valued erosion and dilation. Finally, we compute the convex combinations of the upper and lower bounds of the interval-valued erosion and dilation image, to obtain a morphological erosion and dilation respectively, and thus an edge image.

Background Pyrazinamide is an important drug against the latent stage of tuberculosis and is used in both first- and second-line treatment regimens. Pyrazinamide-susceptibility test usually takes a week to have a diagnosis to guide initial therapy, implying a delay in receiving appropriate therapy. The continued increase in multi-drug resistant tuberculosis and the prevalence of pyrazinamide resistance in several countries makes the development of assays for prompt identification of resistance necessary. The main cause of pyrazinamide resistance is the impairment of pyrazinamidase function attributed to mutations in the promoter and/or pncA coding gene. However, not all pncA mutations necessarily affect the pyrazinamidase function. Objective To develop a methodology to predict pyrazinamidase function from detected mutations in the pncA gene. Methods We measured the catalytic constant (k(...

Purple corn (Zea mays L.) is a superfood native to Peru, highly regarded for its functional properties and commonly used in the preparation of traditional beverages and desserts, such as chicha morada and mazamorra morada. Following processing, the corn cobs remaining as a byproduct retain significant amounts of bioactive compounds with potential for utilization. This study proposes their use as a primary component in the production of teas. To ensure product safety, the moisture content, total ash, and counts of enterobacteria and aflatoxins in the raw materials were first evaluated. Fourteen formulations were developed, varying in the proportions of corn cobs, quince, stevia, cinnamon, and cloves, as well as extraction times (5 and 10 minutes at 100 °C) with hot water. Two rapid sensory evaluation methods using consumer panels were applied sequentially: Flash Profile (FP) and Check-...
