It has been determined Glycated A1c haemoglobin, Superóxido Dismutase, Glutation peroxidase and Malondialdehide levels in 25 patients with Diabetes mellitus type 2, whom participate in the Education Program for Diabetic Patients, from Arzobispo Loayza Hospital, they were confront with 15 persons apparently healthful control group. There is a positive correlation between Glycated A1c haemoglobin - Superoxido Dismutase (r=0,164, p<0.05) and Glycated A1c haemoglobin - Malondyaldehíde (r=0.432, p<0.05) levels. We deduce that a high level of Malondialdehíde is associate with the Diabetes mellitus type 2 complications, for a high free radicals generation, that conduce to antioxidantes system desequilibrium, resulting low Ievels Glutation peroxidase, normal or high slightly level Superoxido Dismutase confront control group.

This paper describes the research conducted to develop an optimal methodology to extract useful fibers from the “Ichu” grasses which can be used as reinforcement of polyester resin. Laminates were manufactured and their flexural properties were characterized as well as the optimal fiber properties. Results show that for this kind of materials, the mechanical and retting treatments are insufficient to remove lignin from the raw material state; on the other hand, alkali treatments are considerably effective. Laminates transverse strength shows an improvement (up to 30 MPa) when the alkali treatment time increases. Longitudinal strength and modulus present values around ~144 MPa and ~8.8 GPa respectively with fiber volume fraction around 0.38. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor & Francis.

Ichu and Cabuya were characterized and the effect of alkali treatment on the chemical and physical properties of these fibers was studied. This treatment was carried out to remove non-cellulosic components in order to improve the adhesion of these fibers to be used as reinforcing composites since they are currently being tested in polymer matrix composites. The chemical properties were investigated through TAPPI Standards and FTIR spectroscopy. The physical properties (microfibrillar angle and density) were analyzed through polarized light microscopy and a gas pycnometer, respectively. The results show that with this chemical treatment, it is possible to remove 53.9% of lignin and 22.7% of hemicellulose for Ichu fiber and 50.7% and 91.7%, respectively, for Cabuya. Besides, it was found that the microfibrillar angle is not affected by this chemical treatment since its effect is only super...

ZnO/TiO2 nanostructures were fabricated by an electrostatically modified electrospinning technique using zinc acetate and commercially available TiO2-P25, polyvinyl alcohol, and a solvent. It was found that the TiO2-P25 nanoparticles were attached to the ZnO nanostructures, and the mean diameter of the nanoparticles forming the nanostructures ranged from 31 to 52 nm with increasing the amount of zinc acetate. The obtained results evidenced that the coupling of TiO2 with ZnO enhanced the IPCE and improved the photocatalytic activity of ZnO. Particularly, the ZnO/TiO2 nanostructures fabricated with a zinc acetate-to-PVA ratio of 2:3 exhibited the highest IPCE and photocatalytic activity.

Background: Patients' lack of knowledge about their own disease may function as a barrier to shared decision-making and well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of written educational materials on breast cancer patients. Methods: This multicenter, parallel, unblinded, randomized trial included Latin American women aged ≥18 years with a recent breast cancer diagnosis yet to start systemic therapy. Participants underwent randomization in a 1:1 ratio to receive a customizable or standard educational brochure. The primary objective was accurate identification of molecular subtype. Secondary objectives included identification of clinical stage, treatment options, participation in decision-making, perceived quality of information received, and illness uncertainty. Follow-up occurred at 7–21 and 30–51 days post-randomization. ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05798312. Results:...

Background Describing the prevalence and trends of cardiometabolic risk factors that are associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is crucial for monitoring progress, planning prevention, and providing evidence to support policy efforts. We aimed to analyse the transition in body-mass index (BMI), obesity, blood pressure, raised blood pressure, and diabetes in the Americas, between 1980 and 2014. Methods We did a pooled analysis of population-based studies with data on anthropometric measurements, biomarkers for diabetes, and blood pressure from adults aged 18 years or older. A Bayesian model was used to estimate trends in BMI, raised blood pressure (systolic blood pressure =140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure =90 mm Hg), and diabetes (fasting plasma glucose =7.0 mmol/L, history of diabetes, or diabetes treatment) from 1980 to 2014, in 37 countries and six subregions of the Ameri...
