The purpose of this work is to verify the presence of iron sulfides in gray laminar castings manufactured in a cubicle furnace using high sulfur anthracite as fuel, and to evaluate their impact on mechanical properties. In this work, 04 samples of foundries, 03 of high sulphur -above the standard for these materials- and one of low sulphur have been evaluated. The microstructural examination and analysis by scanning electron microscopy and EDAX microprobe, indicated abundant presence of inclusions of manganese sulphides, associated with these, iron sulphides and mixed of iron and manganese, especially in high sulphur samples. The evaluation of the manganese content in the samples explains the presence of iron sulfides, since according to the calculations made, it is present in the alloy even in that sample whose in a lower percentage than that required to neutralize all the S content is w...

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are the standard treatment for epidermal growth factor receptor mutant (EGFRm) advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Combining TKIs with an angiogenesis inhibitor has shown promise in pre-clinical studies. A systematic search of clinical trials found that combining erlotinib (a first-generation TKI) with bevacizumab or ramucirumab (angiogenesis inhibitors) improved progression-free survival (PFS) in EGFRm advanced NSCLC patients compared to TKI alone. However, no significant benefit in overall survival (OS) was observed in trials. Similar efficacy was seen in patients with specific EGFR mutations. Third generation TKIs were used as second-line therapy for patients with the T790M mutation. The combination treatment was associated with a higher incidence of severe adverse events. Overall, combining erlotinib or another TKI with an angiogenesis inhib...

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most frequent cause of direct cancer death worldwide. The study of the molecular state of oncogenes has predictive and prognostic value in metastatic CRC (mCRC). The B-raf proto-oncogene (BRAF) gene mutation represents the 8%-12% of all mutations in mCRC. The BRAF V600E mutation, considered the most common alteration of BRAF, corresponds to a constitutive kinase with a high activating capacity of the RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway after a cascade of successive phosphorylations in the transcription of genes. BRAF V600E mutation is more prevalent in women, elderly, right-sided colon cancer and Caucasian population. Unfortunately, it is considered a poor predictive and prognosis biomarker. Patients with mCRC BRAF V600E mutated (BRAFm) are generally associated with poor response to chemotherapy and short progression-free survival and overall survival. Recently,...

In current times, and with regard to extractive metallurgy, the use of new technologies for the recovery os values that can be present in minerals or in their concentrates and which can be hardly extracted by means of conventional technologies are shown special interest. One of these new technologies is bacterial leaching. In the present work, the theoretical aspects of bacterial leaching are made known, remarking on the importance of the mechanism involved in the biooxidation of Fe(II) towards Fe(III). Experimental aspects are also mentioned, such as the methodology followed in biohydrometallurgical processes. To that effect, results of tests carried out in the laboratory are presented, with which we can better outline the interest that the use of biological systems in the recovery of metallic values arouses.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is part of the Ewing sarcoma family of tumors. The present case reports a primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) of rare location in the bladder in a newborn. It was evaluated with prenatal ultrasound and postnatal tomography that revealed a mass in the posterior wall of the bladder. The patient underwent partial cystectomy with subsequent analysis of the surgical piece removed, the histopathological study indicated a tumor of mesenchymal origin, and immunohistochemical staining confirmed the diagnosis of PNET of the bladder. Satisfactory result and short-term follow-up.

Background: Mutations in STK11 (STK11Mut) and, frequently co-occurring, KEAP1 mutations (KEAP1Mut) are associated with poor survival in metastatic Non-small Cell Lung Cancer (mNSCLC) patients treated with immunotherapy. However, there are limited data regarding the prognostic or predictive significance of these genomic alterations among Hispanics. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed a cohort of Hispanic patients (N = 103) diagnosed with mNSCLC from the US and seven Latin American countries (LATAM) treated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) alone or in combination as first-line (Cohort A). All cases were treated in routine care between January 2016 and December 2021. The main objectives were to determine the association of mutations in STK11 or KEAP1 in these patients’ tumors with overall (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), presence of KRAS mutations, tumor mutational ...

Background Describing the prevalence and trends of cardiometabolic risk factors that are associated with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) is crucial for monitoring progress, planning prevention, and providing evidence to support policy efforts. We aimed to analyse the transition in body-mass index (BMI), obesity, blood pressure, raised blood pressure, and diabetes in the Americas, between 1980 and 2014. Methods We did a pooled analysis of population-based studies with data on anthropometric measurements, biomarkers for diabetes, and blood pressure from adults aged 18 years or older. A Bayesian model was used to estimate trends in BMI, raised blood pressure (systolic blood pressure =140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure =90 mm Hg), and diabetes (fasting plasma glucose =7.0 mmol/L, history of diabetes, or diabetes treatment) from 1980 to 2014, in 37 countries and six subregions of the Ameri...
