Academic efficacy and academic engagement scales were used, as well as cell phone, internet and video game addiction tests. Results: The application of the program significantly reduced the internet addiction, cell phone and video games and at the same time significantly increased the positive assessment of academic engagement and academic efficacy; comparisons between the study groups (GE versus GC) according to the effect sizes (.30 < d >. 50) evidenced important practical differences in the internet addiction, cell phone and video games, for th...

Background: Several risk factors for noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including obesity, are associated with behaviors established in infancy that persist throughout adolescence and adulthood. As such, adolescents should be engaged in the design and implementation of NCD prevention strategies. Community Context: In Lima, Peru’s capital, the proportion of adolescents aged 15 to 19 is 9.3% of the city’s population, and school enrollment rates are high. The prevalence of excess weight in Peruvian adolescents is 14.2%, and prevalence has not declined in recent years. Also recently, NCDs and their risk factors have gained more attention in public health and policy areas, with regulatory action focusing on healthful nutrition to address obesity and related NCDs. The Multiplicadores Jóvenes (Young Multipliers) project was conducted among adolescents aged 15 to 17 from 9 public secondary sc...

Objective: To determine the prevalence and incidence rates of Healthcare Associated Infections (IAAS) in the NationalInstitute of Maternal and Perinatal Health (INMP) from 2012 to 2016. Materials and methods: We reviewed the cases of IAASin a historical cohort from 2012 to 2016, the case definition of IAAS or intrahospital Infection (IIH) was performed accordingto the Technical Standard of MINSA. The prevalence was established comparing it with the total of hospital discharges duringthe study period. The average incidence rates were established for each type of infection, according to risk factor of exposureand service of occurrence. These rates were compared with the national incidence rates established by the National Centerfor Epidemiology, Prevention and Control of Infections of MINSA - Peru.

The recent suspension of U.S. government support for various health and development programs in Latin America highlights the risks of dependence on foreign cooperation. This decision compromises Peru's progress in public health, particularly in strategic areas such as HIV prevention, tuberculosis control, and the elimination of communicable diseases. Despite the historical dependence on international cooperation, USAID reports have highlighted the potential for self-sustainability of the programs implemented in Peru. However, the suspension of foreign support significantly impacts on the development of activities that favor health care coverage, continuity of services, and research capacity in public health. These effects could be sustained in the long term, with consequences that are difficult to reverse if compensation measures or national strengthening strategies are not adopted.

Plagiarism is a serious, yet widespread type of research misconduct, and is often neglected in developing countries. Despite its far-reaching implications, plagiarism is poorly acknowledged and discussed in the academic setting, and insufficient evidence exists in Latin America and developing countries to inform the development of preventive strategies. In this context, we present a longitudinal case study of seven instances of plagiarism and cheating arising in four consecutive classes (2011–2014) of an Epidemiology Masters’ program in Lima, Peru, and describe the implementation and outcomes of a multifaceted, “zero-tolerance” policy aimed at introducing research integrity. Two cases involved cheating in graded assignments, and five cases correspond to plagiarism in the thesis protocol. Cases revealed poor awareness and high tolerance to plagiarism, poor academic performance, an...

Iodine is an essential element for synthesizing thyroid hormones, it is also essential for cell metabolism and tissue development, especially in the brain. Iodine requirements are higher during pregnancy and lactation. Iodine deficiency (ID) is a widespread condition all over the world; it is frequent in Peruvian highlands and rainforest. ID causes damage in all life periods, and vulnerability for this is greater during pregnancy and infancy. Universal salt iodination (USI) for human use is the most cost-effective and sustainable strategy for controlling ID. Peru has achieved the sustained elimination of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) since 1994. Objective. To determine the effectiveness of the national program for controlling IDDs and the USI strategy for complying with the increased iodine requirement and to assure optimal iodine nutrition in pregnant women from the Peruvian highlan...

The objective of this study was to describe the knowledge levels regarding the prevention triad for rabies transmitted by dog bites among residents of Metropolitan Lima. Data were collected from the National Survey of Budget Programs 2020. The classifying variables included district groupings (Lima Norte, Lima Centro, Lima Este, Lima Sur, and Callao) and the socioeconomic stratum of the population (A, B, C, D, and E). The study variables focused on the proportion of residents who were aware of the components of the prevention triad for rabies (washing the wound with soap and water, identifying the biting animal, and seeking medical care). The study found that only 7.2% of respondents were aware of all three components of the prevention triad for rabies. The best-known component was seeking medical care (90.2%), followed by washing the wound with soap and water (49.7%), and identifying th...

The aim of this study was to determine the knowledge of the Peruvian population about the actions that make up the preventive triad of rabies that were reported in the National Survey of Budgetary Programs 2020. The independent variables were the departments of the country (includes Callao), area (urban and rural), geographic region (coast, highlands and jungle) and urban sociodemographic strata (A, B, C, D and E). The study retrieved information from 52 791 surveys, finding that the most frequently recognized component of the preventive triad was going to the health facility (85.4%), followed by washing the wound with plenty of soap and water (43.1%) and, by last, identify the aggressor animal (15.5%). These components were recognized more frequently in urban areas and on the coast of the country. A positive and direct correlation was found between knowledge of the components of th...
