Trace concentrations of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc were determinated in muscles and internal organs of rock shell (Stramonita T. chocolata), hairy rockcrab (Cancer setosus), Peruvian rock seabass (Paralabrax humeralis), small mussel (Semimytilus algosus), keyhole limpet (Fissurella spp.) and chiton (Chiton spp.) collected in October 2001 from Huarmey bay, Ancash, Peru. The selected organs were liophylized and process according to CEM the USA 1994 and analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Lower concentrations of cadmium (0,63 μg/g), copper (1,87 μg/g) and zinc (1,70 μg/g) were observed in P. humeralis muscle, in contrast higher values of zinc (24,16 μg/g) was in T. chocolata and copper (28,0 μg/g) in muscle of Chiton spp. Trace concentrations were within the international standard limits established by some countries (Nauen, 1983).

Bulk aerosol samples collected during cruise M91 of FS Meteor off the coast of Peru in December 2012 were analysed for their soluble trace metal (Fe, Al, Mn, Ti, Zn, V, Ni, Cu, Co, Cd, Pb, Th) and major ion (including NO−3 and NH+4) content. These data are among the first recorded for trace metals in this relatively poorly studied region of the global marine atmosphere. To the north of ∼ 13◦ S, the concentrations of several elements (Fe, Ti, Zn, V, Ni, Pb) appear to be related to distance from the coast. At the south of the transect (∼ 15–16◦ S), elevated concentrations of Fe, Cu, Co and Ni were observed. These may be related to the activities of the large smelting facilities in the south of Peru or northern Chile. Calculated dry deposition fluxes (3370–17 800 and 16–107 nmolm−2d−1 for inorganic nitrogen and soluble Fe respectively) indicated that atmospheric input to...

Trace metals continue to generate environmental pollution problems because of their persistence in the environment, representing a hazard for living organisms. Although recent studies have reported trace metal environmental pollution in soils of some parts of Lima, there is still much about trace metal pollution that needs to be explored. Using feral pigeons (Columba livia) as biomonitor could facilitate rapid assessments of trace metal contamination in cities like Lima.  In this study, we determined the concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), selenium (Se), iron (Fe) and strontium (Sr) in the liver of 21 pigeons from three sites with industrial, urban and rural land-use characteristics. Our results showed that when compared to the rural site, the concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, Se, Fe and Sr were significantly higher in both the industrial and ...

The southern rivers of Peru originate in the Andes Mountains and flow in a southwestern direction to the Pacific Ocean through one of the most hyper-arid regions of the world. During each sub-equatorial summer from December to February, rains and snow melt in the Andes increase the streamflow in these rivers, even as they pass through the 100 km arid zone to the ocean. This study quantified seasonal dynamics of 34 trace metal elements (TM) and other constituent concentrations in four southern river basins of Peru (Chili-Quilca, Tambo, Camana-Majes-Colca, and Ocoña) during 2019–2020. Consistent with previous studies, we observed that: (1) the river water in the southern basins had relatively high concentrations of B, As, Fe, Al, Mn, P, Pb and Ni, with As the most ubiquitous toxic TM in all the basins, often detected at concentrations surpassing Peruvian and USEPA regulated concentratio...

Fertilizers provide essential nutrients for crops, however, they may also inadvertently provide trace elements that in certain concentrations represent a risk to the soil and the food chain. The objective of this research was to determine the concentrations of Cd, Pb, Cu, and Zn in the most common fertilizers used in Peruvian agriculture. Twenty-one products including inorganic, organic mineral, and organic fertilizers were analyzed by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. The results were compared against international standards. The content of the trace elements was variable and related to the type of fertilizer. Phosphorus fertilizers showed higher concentrations of Cd (3.3-42.3 mgkg-1), most of which exceeded the regulatory limits of several countries. In the case of Pb, none of the fertilizers analyzed exceeded the regulatory limits. Chicken manure showed the highest concen...

There is concern about the anthropogenic impact on the Antarctic ecosystem, for this reason the Peruvian Marine Research Institute carried out the Twenty-Fifth and Sixth scientific expeditions of Peru to Antarctica. The investigations were carried out in the austral summer 2018-2019 aboard the BAP Carrasco from the Mackellar Cove located on King George Island, in which samples of water and marine sediment were taken at 11 sampling stations for the evaluation of trace metals (Cu, Zn, As and Pb) by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). It was observed that the highest concentration levels of Cu, As and Pb in the water matrix corresponded to the year 2019, compared to the year 2018. Also, these metals did not exceed the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS), for which it is considered that there is no risk of water contamination yet. However, there is a trend of increasing ...

The urban agglomeration of Lima and Callao is the second largest city in the world located in a desert, and its supply depends on three small rivers, the Rímac River being the one with the greatest water supply, affected by contamination by mining tailings, sewage and Solid waste. In order to know the climatological and hydrographic conditions that favor the concentration of heavy metals in the water, the relationship between rainfall, water discharges and concentration of aluminum, cadmium, iron and lead in the Rímac River hydrographic system in the period 2018-2021. For which data processing was carried out from six meteorological stations, a water quality monitoring point and four limnimetric stations, through dynamic tables. As a result, it was found that the concentration of heavy metals is higher in the lower basin when rainfall and river level increase in localities of the Alto ...

Natural recovery and remediation of acid mine drainage (AMD) reduces the generation of acidity and transport of trace elements in the runoff. A natural wetland that receives and remediates AMD from an abandoned copper mine at Parys Mountain (Anglesey, UK) was investigated for better understanding of the remediation mechanisms. Water column concentrations of dissolved Fe and S species, trace metal (loid)s and acidity decreased markedly as the mine drainage stream passed through the wetland. The metal (loid)s were removed from the water column by deposition into the sediment. Fe typically accumulated to higher concentrations in the surface layers of sediment while S and trace metal (loid)s were deposited at higher concentration within deeper (20–50 cm) sediments. High resolution X-ray fluorescence scans of sediment cores taken at three sites along the wetland indicates co–immobilizatio...

The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentration of trace metals (Arsenic, Aluminum, Barium and Manganese) contained in the tributary rivers of Titicaca lake and its effect on the water and sediment quality of the lake. The concentrations of metals in the water matrix for the years 2013-2016, published by the National Water Authority (ANA) were compared to the Environmental Quality Standards (EQS) for water; and the concentration of these metals (As, Al, Ba and Mn) contained in the sediment during the years 2013-2014 were compared to the EQS for sediment of the Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The concentrations of these metals in the water matrix did not exceed the EQS, except for Al and Mn in the waters of tributary rivers; and regarding the lacustrine sediment, As and Ba are the only ones that exceeded the EQS for sediment. Likewise, statistically significant rela...

This study investigated lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) transfer in three dairy farming areas in the Mantaro river headwaters in the central Peruvian Andes and at varying distances from the mining complex at La Oroya. At each of these sites, the transfer of trace metals from the soil to raw milk was estimated, and a hazard assessment for lead and cadmium was carried out in scenarios of minimum, average, and maximum milk consumption in a Peruvian population aged 2–85. Pb and Cd were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. Significantly, the concentrations of lead and cadmium were found to exceed the maximum limits recommended by the World Health Organization, with a positive geospatial trend correlated with the distance from mining activity. Both Pb and Cd were found to be transferred through the soil–pasture–milk pathway, with the primary source of Cd being phosphate-based f...

Planktic and benthic foraminiferal iodine (I) to calcium (Ca) molar ratios have been proposed as an exciting new proxy to assess subsurface and bottom water oxygenation in the past. Compared to trace metals, the analysis of iodine in foraminiferal calcite is more challenging, as iodine is volatile in acid solution. Here, we compare previous analyses that use tertiary amine with alternative analyses using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) to stabilize iodine in solution. In addition, we assess the effect of sample size and cleaning on planktic and benthic foraminiferal I/Ca. Our stabilization experiments with TMAH and NH4OH show similar trends as those using tertiary amine, giving relatively low I/Ca ratios for planktic and benthic foraminifera samples from poorly oxygenated waters, and high ratios for well-oxygenated waters. This suggests that both alter...
