The extraordinary El Niño Costero of 2017 has affected the Peruvian coast, mainly in the Piura region, with the flooding of the Piura river, impacting rural and urban areas in the middle and lower basin. This paper analyses the situation from the perspective of hydrology. Since 2002, the basin has had an early warning system (EWS) made up of a hydrometeorological network and a forecast model, NAXOS. The EWS predicted flows at the Los Ejidos hydrometric station, located immediately upstream of Piura City. The hydrometeorological network has been gradually losing its operation and NAXOS has been left uncalibrated. Its inaccurate forecasts contributed to poor decision-making in disaster prevention in 2017. With the hydro-meteorological information of that year, three models of deterministic forecast of the flow in Los Ejidos have been adjusted by means of multiple linear regression, with 1...

Loop-mediated isothermal DNA amplification (LAMP) methodology offers an opportunity for point-of-care (POC) molecular detection of asymptomatic malaria infections. However, there is still little evidence on the feasibility of implementing this technique for population screenings in isolated field settings.

Background and Objective: Some countries in Latin America (LA) may have the greatest increase in the incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) in both sexes in the coming decades, according to some projections. Increasing efforts to study prognostic factors related to RCC may shorten the regional discrepancies, particularly in the scenario of scarce literature in LA, in comparison to Europe or North America. The evaluation of RCC prognosis allows a greater capacity to anticipate outcomes, in addition to a better understanding of tumor biology and the orientation of the proposed treatment. Herein, we provide a review of the main prognostic factors described in different stages of the disease, considering the progress of publications on kidney cancer in LA. Methods: The PubMed database was used to identify studies on this theme, particularly those from LA. Studies by the Latin American Renal...

The use of L protein coupled magnetic particles for the concentration and purification of immunoglobulin M (mIgM) monoclonal antibodies against Taenia solium was evaluated. Three concentration methods and different elution times were evaluated and the ratio of particles to the ratio of mIgM was optimized. It is demonstrated that: 1) with the use of magnetic particles, a previous concentration of mIgM is not required, which reduces the manipulation of the antibodies and improves the recovery, 2) the use of a binding buffer can be omitted, since the pH of most cell culture supernatants are neutral, and 3) longer elution times (~ 45 minutes) are needed to increase recovery to a level greater than 80%. The study demonstrates that the use of L protein-coupled magnetic particles is a simple and efficient tool for mIgM concentration and purification. © 2020, Instituto Nacional de Salud. All ri...
