Cisplatin-based neoadjuvant therapy has shown clear benefits in clinical stage II or IIIA muscle invasive bladder cancer (MIBC), achieving an impact in progression-free survival and overall survival. This updated review focuses on neoadjuvant therapy for MIBC, including the current recommendations from international and/or local practice guidelines, as well as studies of new therapeutic agents (immunotherapy, targeted therapy), on top of research on potential biomarkers that may predict response to immunotherapy.

This article presents the development of abdominal laparoscopic surgery at the Hospital Guillermo Almenara, since their beginnings, on september 1991, to december 31th 1995; and involve a review of 2750 medical records from patients who underwent this surgery. Cholecistectomy account for 96% of the cases, followed in frequency by inguinocrural hernioplasty (0,88%), splenectomy (0,85%) and cholectomy (0,38%). It is important to underline that there had been an increasing number of surgical procedures (in the field of laparoscopic surgery) other than cholecistectomy, which constituted a little proportion up to 1993: 1,3%, increasing to 2,6% at the ending of 1994, and to 4% at the end of this study. There had been a total of 2465 cases of laparoscopic cholecistectomy, showing a predominance of female patients and a mean age of 44 for females and 51 for males. Convertion index was 4,9%. Tota...

Introduction: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is notably an aggressive breast cancer (BC) subtype, leading to early relapse and poor prognosis. Effects of adjuvant chemotherapy among early-stage TNBC (pT1N0M0) patients remain unclear in different populations. Objectives: Our study aimed to determine the impact of adjuvant chemotherapy on overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) within the specific subset of Peruvian pT1N0M0 TNBC patients (pT1a/b vs. pT1c). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 2007 TNBC cases diagnosed between 2000-2014 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplásicas (Lima, Peru). We included only non-metastatic TNBC cases and classified them as pT1N0M0 after surgery. TNBC patients who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy were excluded. We describe our population according to the tumor size from the residue disease (pT1a/b vs. pT1c). We used the...

Introduction. In Peru, breast cancer represents the most common type of cancer in women and the sixth most lethal type of cancer in the general population. Overexpression of the epidermal growth factor receptor (HER2 +) occurs in 20% to 30% of breast cancers, and is associated with more aggressive tumors, with greater recurrence and greater mortality. Objective. Prepare a set of evidence-based recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of HER2 + breast cancer, in order to help reduce mortality, disease progression and improve quality of life. Methods. A panel of clinical specialists and methodologists was formed, who identified relevant clinical questions about the diagnosis and treatment of HER2 + breast cancer. A systematic search for CPGs was carried out in Medline (PubMed), and in developing and compiling agencies. For the formulation of recomm...

Background: Breast cancer incidence in the United States is lower in Hispanic/Latina (H/L) compared with African American/ Black or Non-Hispanic White women. An Indigenous American breast cancer-protective germline variant (rs140068132) has been reported near the estrogen receptor 1 gene. This study tests the association of rs140068132 and other polymorphisms in the 6q25 region with subtype-specific breast cancer risk in H/Ls of high Indigenous American ancestry. Methods: Genotypes were obtained for 5,094 Peruvian women with (1,755) and without (3,337) breast cancer. Associations between genotype and overall and subtype-specific risk for the protective variant were tested using logistic regression models and conditional analyses, including other risk-associated polymorphisms in the region. Results: We replicated the reported association between rs140068132 and breast cancer risk overall ...

A substantial portion of the genetic predisposition for breast cancer is explained by multiple common genetic variants of relatively small effect. A subset of these variants, which have been identified mostly in individuals of European (EUR) and Asian ancestries, have been combined to construct a polygenic risk score (PRS) to predict breast cancer risk, but the prediction accuracy of existing PRSs in Hispanic/Latinx individuals (H/L) remain relatively low. We assessed the performance of several existing PRS panels with and without addition of H/L-specific variants among self-reported H/L women. PRS performance was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression and the area under the ROC curve. Both EUR and Asian PRSs performed worse in H/L samples compared with original reports. The best EUR PRS performed better than the best Asian PRS in pooled H/L samples. EUR PRSs had decreased per...
