The industrialization of potatoes in Peru constitutes a business opportunity to increase the supply of processed potatoes, generating added value for small producers. For this reason, it is important to have varieties suitable for frying and thus supply the potato value chain for the processing industry (french fries) and snacks (flakes). It is described the origin and genealogy of the clone UH-24 (“Bicentenaria”), its agronomic characteristics through the identification analysis, the way how it developed and multiplied in the greenhouse and in the field, as well as the evaluation process through the analysis of adaptation and efficiency in four environments of Lima region. The potato variety Bicentenaria has good production and adaptation capacity in the central coast of Peru, with a mean tuber yield of 43.2 t ha-1, compared to the commercial varieties Canchán and Diacol Capiro wit...

Bio-innovation, encompassing developments in new breeding techniques (NBTs), presents substantial opportunities for addressing global challenges, though its progress is fundamentally shaped by surrounding regulatory frameworks. Three primary categories of regulations emerge as particularly influential: innovation-promoting frameworks centered on intellectual property rights, regulations targeting societal objectives that indirectly drive innovation, and structural frameworks affecting corporate strategies. Successful bio-innovation systems demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, stakeholder integration, and professional expertise in bridging academic research and industrial applications. Larger companies generally show greater adaptability to regulatory compliance compared to smaller enterprises, while emerging technologies require continuous evolution of governanc...

Peru is a place with abundant biological resources that should be employed for the benefit of society in general. However, to date, the use of Peruvian plant genetic resources was not fully exploited for the development of improved crops. This work was mostly conducted by the international private sector. The Climate Change Laboratory at Instituto Nacional de Innovación Agraria, and other laboratories at Universidad Nacional José Faustino Sánchez Carrión and Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina together with other research programs of other institutions seek to promote the massive and sustainable use of plant genetic resources maintained in germplasm banks. It is planned to make use of modern molecular and morphological techniques. Moreover, infrastructure and human resources are being improved. As a result, we will be able to maintain the growth of the agricultural activity in Per...

Breeding colonies of Storm-petrels (family Hydrobatidae) are poorly known and can be difficult to find because they typically nest on islands in crevices and burrows inside caves. In the past decade, some breeding locations of the Wedge-rumped Storm-petrel (Hydrobates tethys kelsalli) have been reported on islands off central Peru and northern Chile. Here we report the northernmost breeding colony of this subspecies from Isla Foca, northern of Peru. In April 2006 we found 28 nests, of which 46% had chicks and 54% had eggs. Nests consisted of small holes in the rock with no nest material used for construction. Nesting season coincided with that of other reproductive zones found on the Peruvian coast. These results contribute to the knowledge of the distribution of reproductive colonies of this subspecies on the Peruvian coast.

Population growth, climate change and global warming are the great challenges facing agriculture in the 21st century. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the efficiency of selection of new varieties in plant breeding programs. In this regard, flow cytometry has proven to be a very powerful tool to speed-up selection processes in plant breeding because of its versatility and capacity to evaluate large populations.

Every year the government and sheep farmers imported, mainly from Chile, to improve the herds grazing in the highlands of the Andes, which is a significant sum of money which strongly affects the economy of the herds in the region. It was therefore necessary to study results obtained from these imports and if possible give new insights to make better use of the imported cattle.

Birds select habitats to optimize resources and maximize fitness, with some species recently colonizing new areas, like the Eurasian Collared Dove (ECD) in the Iberian Peninsula. The ECD spread across Europe in the early 20th century from South Asia. This study reanalyzes data from the Atlas of Breeding Birds in the Province of Alicante (SE Spain) to identify macrohabitat-level environmental variables related to its occurrence and abundance in this semi-arid Mediterranean landscape during the breeding season. We performed Hierarchical Partitioning analyses to identify important environmental variables for the species associated with natural vegetation, farming, topography, hydrographical web, urbanization, and climate. Results show that ECD has a higher occurrence probability near anthropic areas (isolated buildings, suburban areas), water points (medium-sized ponds), larger crop surface...

We present new aspects of breeding biology of Gray-fronted Dove Leptotila rufaxilla, from five nests found between 2012 and 2014 in a lowland forest fragment in southwestern Brazil. The nests simple/platform shape were built at a mean height of 1.90 m above ground. The clutch size was two eggs white and elliptic, incubated for 15 days (based on three nests). We recorded predation in two nests still in incubation phase. Minimum hatch weight of nestlings was 10 g and young fledged with a mean mass of 56 g. The constant growth rate (K) of nestlings was 0.40 with a growth asymptote of 60.7 g. Daily survival rate, Mayfield and apparent nesting success in the incubation period was 90, 20 and 56%, respectively, while in the nestling period were all 100%. Our data and the contribution of citizen science showed that L. rufaxilla breeds over the year, mainly in the rainy season, both in southweste...

New records of the Brown Booby (Sula leucogaster) in Peru are documented in Guañape, Lobos de Afuera, Macabí and Mazorca islands, and Coles cape. In the fi rst locality, the individual observed corresponded to S. l. brewsteri, extending its dispersal range 3800 km south of its closest breeding area. In the other four areas, probably correspond to S. l. etesiaca, extending its range of dispersion 2860 km south of the closest reproduction area. Considering these observations and those published between 1972 and 2017, the species has been reported throughout the Peruvian coast between 3°S and 19°S, with a maximum of 50 individuals. Since 2008, the species it is reported almost every year, mostly during El Niño warm conditions, and to a lesser extent in normal and cold La Niña conditions, from casual observations to prolonged stays. Based on the observations presented here, the presenc...

The phenomenon is quintessential American racial miscegenation, generated by the Spanish invasion and, in addition, the distinctive cultural phenomenon of the American people, becomes a syncretism or fusion of its life forms adapted into a new pattern, the cultural mix and religious. This article seeks to explain how they lived oppressed Andean women and children charged with first mestizos almost all bastards, with the offspring born in these lands whites relations «conquerors» with young women converted to mistresses or concubines. It also analyzes the life of the first mestizo born in the fateful years of the «civil wars» and early days of the Colony: Francisca Pizarro Yupanqui, Maria Yupanqui Betanzos, Beatriz Coya Loyola famous mestizo Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Carlos Inca, Blas Valera, Tupac Amaru, Juan Avendaño Azarpay, among others.
