Humankind is currently facing a challenge that distinguishes no borders, ideologies, socioeconomic systems, ethnic groups, religions or cultures. It is a war that unites us as a biological species, in which the main weapons come from research aimed at improving health systems. In this war, governments and international health organizations define the strategy; and health systems and law enforcement agencies, together with citizens’ support, carry out actions and fight the battles. However, the most important battle is fought inside each of us. Just like Perseus fought against Hades in a battle of titans to prevent the Earth from turning into hell, the immune system activates a powerful machinery in which molecules and cells of the innate and acquired immune system jointly act to defeat SARS-Cov-2: a machinery that follows a script written by evolution, and that will leave in our immune...

Despite the measures implemented worldwide, the spread of the new SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus is on the rise, which is why it is important to know the characteristics of the disease, as well as different considerations to take into account in dental clinical management. This pandemic obliges all health professionals to know their epidemiological characteristics, in order to generate preventive measures and care protocols that are necessary and important in these cases, respecting the biosafety regulations in order to avoid contagions between patient-professionals and professionals-patients. In the dental area, most clinical procedures are related to the direct contact of aerosols, which are a considerable source of contamination, which is why in this work a review of the epidemiological aspects of COVID-19 and the care to be taken in dental care.

The management of the SARS-CoV-2 infection in Taiwan has been listed as one of the most efficient in the world. Its population size is almost equivalent to that of Peru, but the rate of infections has been less than 600 and the mortality rate has been extremely low: only seven patients died until December. Despite its geographical proximity to the city of Wuhan, Taiwan successfully faced the pandemic because of its previous experience with the SARS epidemic in 2003 and its greater public awareness compared to that in other countries. The actions that have made of Taiwan an example of how to develop an efficient public health policy to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 are the following: the use of electronic and computer resources; the appropriate use of information; the development of its own laboratory tests; and, finally, the careful and effective management of suspected cases, contact...

Since its beginning, in December 2019, the pandemic caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has infected more than 116 millions of people. In addition to the well-documented respiratory manifestations caused by SARS-CoV-2, an increasing number of neurological and psychiatric manifestations are being reported among affected individuals and survivors. In this article we describe the potential invasion mechanisms of SARS-CoV-2 to the nervous system. On the basis of preceding studies on similar coronaviruses (MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV) and current evidence, three possible neuroinvasion routes used by SARS-CoV-2 are suggested: the transneuronal pathway (retrograde axonal pathway through the peripheral nerves), the hematogenous / lymphatic pathway (free through the blood and lymph or inside immune cells), and the digestive pathway (through disruption of the intestinal barrier). Although ...

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused an unknown impact on the male reproductive health. Therefore, this article aimed to collect evidence to discover if the causative agent of COVID-19 is found in semen. A search was carried out in the PubMed, BVS and Google Scholar databases. Articles with results of semen analyses to determine the presence of SARS-CoV-2 in men diagnosed with COVID-19 were considered. Eleven studies with a total of 296 samples were collected in this review, out of which only 2.70 % showed positive results. In addition, mixed results regarding the morphology of the spermatozoa, as well as patients with azoospermia or oligospermia, were reported. The latter could be a consequence of the high levels of the angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the testes, making them a target organ for SARS-CoV-2. It is concludedthat, due to the limited number of studies and samples, it is...
