Purpose: This paper aims to examine whether a sample of non-financial Chilean firms performed earnings management to avoid the decreases and losses in the earnings during the 2010-2014 period. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis is undertaken using the distributions of earnings changes and earnings, according to Burgstahler and Dichev (1997) methodology. Findings: The results showed unusually low frequencies of small losses and small declines in earnings and unusually high frequencies of small benefits and small increases in earnings. Both results were statistically significant. Practical implications: The study presents evidence of possible earnings management activity to avoid reporting losses and earnings decreases during the period 2010-2014. These results would allow to identify “suspicious” companies of earnings management and would increase the likelihood of detecting fi...

Background: Case reports and case series are essential sources of knowledge; however, they only provide low-quality scientific evidence. These studies are common in the medical field because they allow to formulate new hypotheses and to report new and rare pathologies in a structured way and complications or adverse drug events. Hence, the primary objective of a case report or case series is contributing to the scientific knowledge. To publishing these studies, it is recommended to follow the CARE statement's recommendations to guarantee a structured report with a minimum of pertinent and relevant information to make a clear and precise interpretation of the findings. This review aims to provide a scientific writing guide for case reports and case series and maximize their publicity in indexed peer-reviewed journals.

The aim of this article is to report an atypical case of Heck's disease, given its single-site positivity for HPV genotypes 56, 71 and 74, with different biological significance. This disease is a benign oral pathology with variable prevalence according to geographic region and ethnic group; its etiology is multifactorial, in which the human papillomavirus (HPV), genotypes 13 and 32 play a leading role. However, in the last ten years, sporadic cases of this pathology have been documented, positive for non-classical genotypes and high oncogenic risk. The clinical and histopathological picture found in the patient's oral cavity was consistent with the entity in reference, confirmed by a molecular study based on polymerase chain reaction for HPV genotypes 56, 71 and 74. In conclusion, the present case is considered unusual due to positivity for genotypes that have not been documented in thi...

The odontogenic myxoma is a benign lesion that occurs mostly between the second and fourth decade of life, more frequently in the molar area and with a higher incidence in men than in women (2:1). Histologically, it presents starred and fusiform cells dispersed in a very abundant myxoid matrix. The objective of this article is to report a clinical case of an odontogenic myxoma, as well as a brief review of the literature. Subject: a 39-year-old female patient who attended the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery clinic due to an increase in volume located in the jaw in the vestibular area between teeth 31 and 44; asymptomatic at palpation, with an evolution of approximately twelve months. An incisional biopsy was performed for the histopathological study. The result of the histopathological study was an odontogenic myxoma, so we decided that the best treatment was a free margin resection and r...

One of the challenges of dentistry is oral rehabilitation in totally edentulous patients with atrophic jaws. This case reports a protocol for implant treatment performed in elderly patient with an edentulous jaws and advanced atrophy, in which an implant-retained implant-supported and consistent rehabilitation was conducted in a superior hybrid prosthesis supported by 6 implants and on lower denture retained by a horizontal bar attached to 4 implants, with a total follow-up of 1 year, without reporting complications. This case gives us evidence of an implant and rehabilitation protocol for patients with severe atrophy thus improving poor retention and stability posed by conventional prostheses in atrophic jaws, and show the benefits in terms of masticatory efficiency and better quality of life for patients with this diagnosis.

Errors in medical practice, associated with inappropriate communication, praxis and other factors have been reported in several studies and it is necessary to analyze them due to the consequences for the patient, the family, the health professional and the institutions; even more so if the final diagnosis is oncologic. The aim of the present article is to report two clinical cases in which misdiagnosis occurs. A review of various clinical documents has been carried out, after authorization of the two patients and a semi-structured interview. Factors that may lead to possible errors during the oncologic diagnostic process and affect the doctor-patient relationship are discussed, such as deficits in the communication process, educational and academic deficits, consultation time and deontological aspects.

Resection of vestibular exostoses and mandibular tori as a key pre-prosthetic procedure for optimal edentulous rehabilitation. This article reports a case involving the resection of a mandibular torus and vestibular exostoses, emphasizing the use of a 3D-printed surgical guide for enhanced precision. A 49-year-old female patient diagnosed with mandibular tori and vestibular exostoses in the edentulous mandibular region underwent pre-prosthetic surgical treatment. The procedure involved the resection of the mandibular torus and vestibular exostoses, guided by virtual planning. Customized mandibular cutting guides, fabricated using acrylic resin, facilitated precise osteotomy. The use of these patient-specific surgical guides resulted in: reduced surgical time, minimally invasive approach, improved postoperative recovery, preserved mandibular symmetry and fewer surgical complications. At t...

Heartworm disease is a parasitic infection with worldwide distribution, caused by the Dirofilaria immitis nematode and transmitted by culicid mosquitoes, with canines being the main hosts. Serologic tests provide some diagnostic help but are not conclusive. This report describes a clinical case of a canine in which the serological tests for filarial detection and the tests for the detection of microfilaraemia were inconclusive. However, the use of standardized protocols using ultrasound as part of the physical examination, evidenced the presence of cardiac filarials. The importance of reporting this case is to present a clinical protocol that includes cardiac ultrasound for an accurate diagnostic approach.

This thesis shows the existence of a problem in the analysis that judges do for granting of precautionary protection, specifically, when they evaluate the requirement called “plausibility of the right invoked” in each specific case. Evidence of this problem is drawn from various judicial decisions issued on the matter. Although the Peruvian legal system, local doctrine and judges according to their jurisprudence, share a conception of the fumus boni iuris and its importance as a requirement for granting of precautionary measures; in the reality, there is no uniform analysis methodology for this. This lack of uniformity produces negative effects on various fundamental rights that are developed in this work. Recognizing the existence of this problem, an analysis scheme of the “plausibility of the right invoked” is proposed that can contribute to the establishment of a general metho...
