Biosafety tests were conducted on albino mice (NMRI strain) to evaluate pathogenic effects of a native isolate LF14 of B. bassiana, highly virulent to Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma maculata (Triatominae), vectors of Chagas disease in Venezuela. A total of 1x109 conidias/ml of the fungus was administered to the animals by nasal drops. Body weight control and clinical and behavioural evaluations were done daily. Likewise, clearance of fungus was estimated by direct examination and culturing of intranasal samples, and infectivity by performing mycological and histopathological test after necropsies at 3, 7 and 14 days post-inoculation. Animals no showed discernible pathological changes or death and all had active-normal behaviour. Body weight increased in both treated and control mice groups, with statistically difference between sexes (p<0.0000). Anatomopathological changes were not de...

The objective of this article was to investigate the effects of chronic exposure to magnetic fields (MC) of existing environmental levels in the city of Lima on the reproductive health of male mice. Firstly, the information on the levels of the magnetic fields of electric power lines measured in Peru and other countries as well as the exposure limits of the international commission for protection against electromagnetic fields (ICNIRP) were reviewed to define the levels to which it would be exposed to biological material. The biological sample was 32 10-week-old male mice (Mus musculus) of the Balb C strain, with which four experimental groups of 8 mice each were formed, including a control group, one with dummy exposure (sham), a group exposed to 50μT CM and another exposed to 500μT, which were exposed during a spermatogenic cycle (35 days). The weight of the testicles and epididymis ...

Memory is an adaptive tool for survival. It is critical to remember events accurately in order to learn and interact with our surroundings. In that regard, noradrenaline and corticosterone stress hormones have been proven to improve memory but also disrupt it depending on the instant that these hormones levels rise in the brain (during information encoding, consolidating or retrieval). A less investigated aspect would be how these two stress hormones influence memory accuracy. Over time, episodic-like memories are transformed into more semantic ones, which become less dependent on the hippocampus and more dependent on cortical regions like the medial pre-frontal cortex (mPFC). The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of yohimbine (α2-noradrenergic receptor antagonist that increases noradrenaline levels) and corticosterone in memory accuracy in a low-arousing episodic-like...

The granulomatous lymphadenitis is an economically important infectious disease in alpacas. This disease is caused by Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, which is a gram positive bacterium that has an exotoxin (Phospholipase D) as its main virulence factor. The objective of this study was to test the efficacy of a vaccine in a group of mice (20 vaccinated and 20 control). The vaccine was prepared with protein extracts from C. pseudotuberculosis isolated from an alpaca, containing the exotoxin, and used for the immunization of mice which received 16 g of protein extract. This confered protection after challenging intraperitoneally with 104 UFC of C. pseudotuberculosis. The vaccine ameliorated the toxic effects of C. pseudotuberculosis, which was evidenced by the decrease in number and size of abscesses in the vaccinated group (40% affected), in contrast with the severe and systemic damage...
