Wetlands are fragile, unique and important ecosystems that harbour great biodiversity. However, mammalian diversity in wetlands along the Peruvian coast is poorly known. We present data on the diversity and abundance of small mammals from four wetlands located on the central Peruvian coast: Albufera de Medio Mundo, Pantanos de Villa Wildlife Refuge, Ensenada San Antonio, and Caucato. We used conventional traps to survey rodents and mist nets combined with acoustic recording methods to survey bats. Our sampling effort totalled 4651 traps/night, 145 nets/night, and 48 hours/detector. We recorded 5 native species of rodents, 3 non-native rodents, 12 species of bats, and one marsupial. The rodent Akodon mollis and the bats Nyctinomops laticaudatus and N. macrotis are the first records for the department of Lima. The wild guinea pig is distributed along the central and southern Peruvian coast...

In the present research we evaluated the antibacterial and antifungical activity of marine actinomycetes over pathogen of clinical origin. Likewise, it was evaluated the capacity to produce extracellular enzymes like carbohidrases, lipases and proteases. The Actinomycetes were isolated from sediments collected between September to December 2005 of Ancón (Lima) and Independencia (Ica) Bays at depths of 34 and 100 m. The isolation was performed in Casein - Starch Agar (CSA) and Marine Agar (AM) with addition of Cicloheximide (10 μg/mL). The antimicrobial evaluations were done comparing them with pathogenic antibiotic-multiresistant bacteria and fungi from clinical origin; in as much, to evaluate their multienzimatic activity several polimeric substrates were used. A total of 62 actinomycetes were isolated, 31 of there (50%) showed antibacterial activity in opposite to Staphylococcus aure...

Objective: To determine the presence of icaA and icaD genes in biofilm-forming coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from central venous catheters (CVCs) from the intensive care unit of the Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen (HNGAI). Materials and methods: One hundred fifty-one (151) CVCs were collected from the HNGAI in Lima. For the microbiological analysis, 30 CVCs were randomly selected for the Maki method and 121 for the Donlan method. A total of 73 CoNS isolates were obtained and their ability to form biofilms was evaluated using Congo red agar (CRA). CRA-positive isolates showed the presence of icaA and icaD genes by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Results: Out of the 27 CoNS isolated from the external surface of the CVCs, 81 % (22/30) were CRA positive, of which 13.6 % (3/22) presented both genes. Out of the 46 CoNS isolated from the internal surface of...

This study assessed the diet of the Neotropical lizard Liolaemus polystictus from Huancavelica region in the Peruvian central Andes. The diet composition was identified from 54 sample stomach contents. Percentage of vegetable content was higher than the animal one (V% animal content= 22.97 and V% vegetable content= 77.03), and arthropods were the highest animal content with ten foods items. Within the animal content, Coleoptera were the most representative (N%= 32.05, FO= 59.26 and V%= 41.36%). No animal category showed high IRI values to be considered fundamental. There were not significant differences on prey selection between males, females and juveniles, and on vegetal volumetric contents between adults and juveniles. However, vegetal volumetric contents were significantly different between males and females. Significant differences were found between prey length, width and volume an...

This study describes the parasitic fauna of Mylossoma duriventre caught at Lake Coari, a tributary of the middle Solimões River, in the state of Amazonas (central Amazon, Brazil) and the relative condition factor (Kn). Out of 70 necropsied specimens, 90% had the gills parasitized by the helminth Anacanthorus paraspathulatus Kritsky, Boeger & Van Every, 1992 (Dactylogyridae: Anacanthorinae) and the intestine by Eustrongylides Jägerskiöld 1909 (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae) larvae. Atotal of 19,763 specimens of A. paraspathulatus were collected, but the infection by Eustrongylides sp. larvae seemed to be accidental, only three hosts were trophically infected. However, there was no significant difference (p<0.05) in the Kn of parasitized and nonparasitized fish, indicating that the intensity these parasites has not affected the health of the host. This is the first report of parasit...

The genus Trichoderma is primarily recognized for its role as a biocontrol agent against various plant pathogens. Among the actions exhibited by this genus is its activity against Phytophthora capsici (P.c.), the causal agent of crown rot, foliar blight, and fruit rot in pepper cultivation. This study evaluated the antagonistic activity of T. koningiopsis and T. lentiforme against P. capsici. These species, isolated from the Peruvian central rainforest, were previously identified through morphological and molecular methods. The research was conducted in two phases: 1) In the in vitro phase, the treatments included isolates of T. koningiopsis, T. lentiforme, and T. harzianum, each tested both individually and against P. capsici, along with a positive control (+P.c.); 2) For the in vivo phase a negative control (-P.c.) was included. The in vitro antagonism evaluation featured a dual plate ...

The study focused on the assemblage of ‘living’ benthic foraminifera (stained with Rose Bengal) in the surface sediments of El Ferrol Bay (Chimbote, 9°S). Twelve sampling sites were selected at depths ranging from 4.5 to 27 meters in September 2015. Water samples were collected near the seafloor to determine dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, and nutrient (nitrate and phosphate). Sediment samples were analysed for total organic matter (TOM) and the chlorophyll-a to phaeopigment ratio (chl-a/phaeo. Our findings confirm that this bay experiences hypoxic conditions at the seafloor (~2 mL/L) in addition to high dissolved nitrate levels. The assemblage was primarily composed of hyaline calcareous species, a porcelaneous calcareous species, and a soft-shelled foraminiferal species. Densities ranged from moderate to high, with the calcareous species Bolivina costata being the dominant species and ...

The situation of the production of cocoa in the province of Manabi (Ecuador) is presented, together with its development possibilities with the introduction of a sustainable cultural revaluation policy. Cocoa producers generally carry out their activities in rural areas and urban peripheries where living conditions are often precarious; each productive unit (farm) has an approximately extension of five hectares, and 90% of their maintenance is carried out by the family. The objective of this research was to identify the different groups of producers, based on their motivations, for the production of cocoa in the north central area of Manabi, Ecuador. The work comprised two stages: (1) exploratory, where data from official bodies was processed on the ARC GIS software; (2) field work, in which a Likert scale questionnaire was used. The sample is made up of 196 cocoa producers. The research...

This study describes the parasitic fauna and the host-parasite relationship of Semaprochilodus insignis Jardine, 1841 from Coari Lake, a tributary of the middle Solimões River (state of Amazonas, Brazil) in Central Amazonia. Of 56 fish examined, 23.2% had gills parasitized by Gyrodactylus Gemini Ferraz, Shinn & Sommerville 1994 (Monogenoidea: Gyrodactylidae), and the intestine by Procamallanus inopinatus Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928 (Nematoda: Camallanidae). The highest rates of infection were caused by G. gemini. Even though the relative condition factor (Kn) was not affected by parasitism, there was a positive correlation between the intensity of both helminthes, the Kn and the total length of the hosts. This is the first report on the parasitic fauna of S. insignis with occurrences of G. gemini and P. inopinatus for this Neotropical host fromthe Amazonia.

It is attempted in this study to precise a preliminary set of concepts for an analysis of acquisition of historical sense by traditional societies of Andean and Amazonian areas in modern context and with reference to the school. The usual variety in the interpretation of facts by these societies is presented in its cultural context with a preliminary treatment of historicities and mythistory in these areas. In a first cross-cultural analysis of this way, it is made a somere comparation with some historicities of modern Peruvian society. It is also attempted an analytic differentiation of these historicities with the historiographical thought and historical conscience properly conceived. At the end, there are some reflections about a future construction of a historical narrative of this traditional societies with consideration of the somewhere elusive factors of perspective and transdisci...
