Background: Heterotopic ossification (OH) is a complication described in patients with neurological damage. Case report: Patient who suffered a multiple trauma and traumatic brain injury (TBI), with fractures and neurological deficit secondary to TBI, who presented several heterotopic ossifications (OH) during his evolution that compromised the achievement of functional objectives. The main manifestation was swelling and limitation of the articular range (RA) for the extension of the left hip and knee, which kept the lower left limb (MI) flexed, preventing standing and walking. He was diagnosed as osteoma secondary to neurological trauma and received structured medical management, which included surgical intervention: “resection of the osteoma and tenotomy in hamstrings”, obtaining improvement of the joint range, chieving standing and walking with biomechanical support. Discussion: T...

Carious lesions have been the main cause of premature loss of dental pieces in the deciduous dentition, there are a number of treatments which are focused on the prevention of the dental organ, to restore the anatomy of the dental pieces or the exodontics thereof. The premature loss of individual or multiple way can trigger disorders such as: limitation in basic functions, decrease in the length of the dental arches, and reach the point of decreasing the child's self-esteem. The case of a 6-year-old male patient with mixed, asymptomatic dentition, with the diagnosis of dental caries, pulp pathology and dental position anomaly is presented. The following procedures were performed; Pulpectomies, simple restorations and exodontics, to culminate in the placement of a functional orthopedic device. Upon completion of the treatment, the objective was to preserve the dental structure, bone suppo...

The sequence of a comprehensive oral rehabilitation is described in a patient with generalized loss of tooth structure, highlighting the importance of restoring stomatognathic system function through a multidisciplinary approach. The patient was a 57-year-old woman diagnosed with occlusal disharmony, generalized attrition due to parafunction, mild dental crowding, defective restorations, carious lesions, and partial mandibular edentulism. Treatment was performed in two phases: initially, an esthetic mini-JIG was used, and occlusion was stabilized by increasing the vertical dimension using stamped composite resins restorations. In the second phase, veneers, vonlays, and implant-supported crowns were placed in the maxilla, along with a removable partial denture in the mandible, followed by delivery of a protective occlusal splint. The combination of analog and digital techniques allowed fo...

This case report highlights the dental rehabilitation of a patient with controlled diabetes mellitus, emphasizing the importance of oral health in overall well-being. The treatment involved periodontal therapy, fixed and removable prostheses, and precision attachments to restore aesthetics and masticatory function. Significant improvements in oral health, function, and quality of life were achieved, along with stabilization of periodontal health after five months of follow-up. The case underscores the role of proper masticatory function in preventing malnutrition, especially in diabetic patients, where poorly controlled oral health can exacerbate systemic conditions. An interdisciplinary approach is critical in addressing both functional and aesthetic needs, improving both oral and systemic health outcomes for diabetic patients.

Obesity is a global pandemic with serious consequences for public health, directly associatedwith vascular diseases, diabetes, dementia, osteoarthritis, increased mortality and functionaldisability. In older adults, the diagnosis and management of obesity require specific considerations that differ from approaches applied to younger populations. The relationship between agingand obesity is particularly complex and multifactorial, sharing common pathways associated with chronic disease and systemic inflammatory processes. Interventions should focus on the individual, carefully evaluating the impact on both functional and intrinsic capacities, while also considering the expected time to achieve therapeutic benefits. Beyond changes in body mass index and weight, therapeutic strategies should primarily aim to reduce fat mass while simultaneously improving muscle mass and functionality. This ...

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between students’ cognitive and self-regulatory strategies, academic engagement, and academic achievement in higher education, analyzing the mediating role of reading comprehension. Different tasks to assess the constructs were administered to 209 students (Mage = 21.71; SD = 4.36). The students' GPA was used as a measure of academic achievement. Significant associations were found between cognitive and self-regulation strategies, academic engagement, reading comprehension, and students' GPA. In addition, a positive association was found between cognitive and self-regulation strategies and academic engagement. Finally, the structural equation model showed that cognitive and self-regulation strategies and academic engagement have direct effects on students' GPA. Additionally, an indirect effect of cognitive and self-regulation...

Periodontal disease affects patients’ health compromising the shape, function and aesthetics of the entirestomatognathic system, leading to significant deterioration in the quality of life of the patient. Using the actualclassification, we will evaluate the stages of disease of the periodontium depending on the severity, complexity of treatment and degrees according to the level of risk that the patient may present with. Thisclinical case proposes a comprehensive treatment of a 58-year-old male patient with periodontitisaccompanied by the new classification of periodontal diseases to make an adequate diagnosis, based onupdated scientific evidence. Both clinical and radiological assessments were performed as well asmeasurements of the depth of periodontal pockets using the WHO periodontal probe. These were recordedin the periodontogram to determine the pathology and staging of disease (S...

Dental erosion is the chronic and painless loss of the hard tissue of the tooth produced by acidic or chelating agents without bacterial involvement. The aim of this case report is to describe the comprehensive oral rehabilitation of a patient with dental erosion due to gastric reflux. This report describes the case of a patient that shows dental caries on occlusal surfaces of pieces 55 and 65 and wear on occlusal surfaces with compromise of dentin in pieces 64, 74, 75, 84 and 85. The decayed pieces were restored with composite resin and the pieces with occlusal wear were restored with stainless steel crowns. Post treatment follow ups were performed. The integral rehabilitation had a positive impact on the patient since the development of the masticatory and aesthetic functions were improved.

Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis, endemic to Latin America, caused by the dimorphicfungus Paracoccidioides spp., mainly acquired through the inhalation of spores present in theenvironment. It predominantly affects males in rural areas due to their frequent exposure tocontaminated soil. Following primary infection, the pathogen has the potential to spread viahematogenous or lymphatic routes, involving various organs and systems. The acute form ofparacoccidioidomycosis impairs peripheral T-cell function and disrupts neutrophil maturation, while the chronic form is characterized by a progressive decline of the cellular immune response, along with increased Th1-cytokine levels. Severe cases may present with hypergammaglobulinemia, reduced phagocytic capacity and immune dysregulation. The most significant risk factors includeprior immunosuppression and infectious comorbidities, such ...

The role of excess and deficit of thyroid hormone in the pathogenesis of mood disorders has been recorded for almost two centuries. Thyroid pathologies, the most numerous among endocrine diseases, are causally associated with psychiatric pathology in a significant percentage of cases. Specifically, hyperthyroidism produces multiple psychopathological manifestations of anxious and depressive type, manic episodes and, infrequently, psychosis. Although the influence of the thyroid axis on the neural pathways of norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin plays a fundamental neurobiological role in these phenomena, there are still multiple underlying mechanisms to be elucidated. Given the need for a broad and comprehensive differential diagnosis between primary and secondary psychiatric pathologies, we report the case of a 52-year-old patient with psychotic depression in whom the late diagnosis ...

The availability and access to city facilities are key metrics in the assessment of the quality of life of its inhabitants. In our case study, it became evident that there is a gap between the supply of facilities (education, health, supply, security, culture, recreation, and sports) and the context of urban planning, which must structure a comprehensive and long-term vision through urban plans. This management tool must integrate facilities with housing, transportation, facilities, workplaces, etc. Likewise, it must cover various scales (neighborhoods, districts, municipalities, metropolitan areas, regions) and a multi stakeholder vision (government authorities, private entrepreneurs, academics, and civil society). The existing gap generates an inequitable territorial distribution of facilities and services, which leads to progressive social segregation in the city and a progressive dec...
