Objective: To assess the degree of hemoglobin correlation as a possible predictor of hematocrit and red blood cell count according to age and sex in a population of the district of Villa El Salvador, Lima, Peru. Materials and methods: An observational, analytical, correlational and prospective study carried out with 550 menand 700 women of all ages who attended monthly preventive-promotional health campaigns, as well as routine medicalconsultations, from January 2021 to June 2022. Collected data consisted of hematocrit, red blood cells and hemoglobincounts. The Spearman’s correlation coefficient was used. Results: There was a higher prevalence of anemia in the group of women older than 11 years (35.10 %), while hemoglobin levels in most children younger than 11 years were mainly normal. High and positive correlations between hemoglobin and hematocrit close to one were found in all age ...

Introduction: Stage III non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) management is challenging given the heterogeneous nature of the disease. The LATAM subset of the real-world, global KINDLE study reported the treatment patterns and clinical outcomes for LATAM from the pre-immuno-oncology era. Methods: The study was conducted in seven countries (Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay) in stage III NSCLC (American Joint Committee on Cancer, 7th edition) diagnosed between January 2013 and December 2017. Retrospective data from patients' medical records (index date to the end of follow-up) were collected. Summary statistics, Kaplan–Meier survival estimates and a two-sided 95% confidence interval (CI) were provided. Cox proportional hazard model was used for univariate and multi-variate analyses. Results: A total of 231 patients was enrolled, the median age was 65....

The purpose of this study was to determine the survival and prognostic factors of patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the oral cavity and maxillofacial region. Retrospectively, the clinical records of patients with a primary diagnosis of DLBCL of the oral cavity and maxillofacial region treated at the A.C. Camargo Hospital for Cancer, São Paulo, Brazil, between January 1980 and December 2005 were evaluated to determine (A) overall survival (OS) at 2 and 5 years and the individual survival percentage for each possible prognostic factor by means of the actuarial technique (also known as mortality tables), and the Kaplan Meier product limit method (which provided the survival value curves for each possible prognostic factor); (B) prognostic factors subject to univariate evaluation with the log-rank test (also known as Mantel-Cox), and multivariate analysis with Cox's reg...

Undifferentiated carcinoma with undifferentiated osteoclast-like cells (UC-OGC) in the head of the pancreas is extremely rare. The clinicalpathological, imaging and topographic appearance characteristics are not wellclassified. This case report describes a patient with UC-OGC of the Pancreas Head. Our patient, an adult over 75 years of age, had a considerable illness time, without relevant symptoms until the advanced stages of the tumor, debuting with shallow gastric discomfort, then weight loss. In the diagnostic tests they found the presence of a tumor that compromised the stomach, duodenum and pancreas. The definitive diagnosis was given by the pathological study. There are not enough clinical data available for a treatment that guarantees a higher survival rate in patients, however, pancreatoduodenectomy is currently the alternative that offers the best results, on the other hand, th...

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global health crisis. Vaccines against this disease have demonstrated variable efficacy and safety, although effectiveness has not been evaluated. In February 2021, the Ministry of Health of Peru approved the emergency use of the inactivated SARS-CoV-2 (Vero Cell) vaccine and initiated vaccination with health personnel at the national level. The objective of the study is to determine the effectiveness of this vaccine to reduce infections, hospitalizations, and deaths due to COVID-19. Methodology: We performed a retrospective cohort study in the period from 23 February to 26 June 2021; data were obtained from the Ministry of Health (including demographic, epidemiologic, clinical, hospital, laboratory results, deaths, and both date and quantity of vaccine doses delivered). The exposed cohort were those who received one or two vaccine doses a...

Background: Text messaging (SMS) interventions to improve HIV retention in care have shown mixed results, probably due to the diversity of features of their design and implementation. Methods: Using routinely collected data of the largest HIV program in Lima, we retrospectively evaluated the efficacy of an adapted single-arm, one-way SMS pilot intervention, intended to improve compliance with medical and ART pick-up appointments, by use of (i) SMS reminders before scheduled visits, (ii) a motivational SMS after scheduled visit, and (iii) phone calls after missed visits delivered for up to 9 months. The SMS group included people living with HIV (PLWH) ages 18-29 starting or restarting antiretroviral therapy (ART). For the control group, we non-randomly selected PLWH up to 35 years-old who were enrolled in the same HIV program within overlapping or closest dates to those of the SMS group (...
