The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a health problem in various parts of the world, and measures to curb the spread of the virus were based on the use of masks, social immobilisation, preventive and constant cleanliness, etc. Likewise, other public health problems such as anemia could not be tackled as in previous years. National surveys show that the consumption of iron, the main measure for the preventive and therapeutic treatment of this hematological condition, was significantly reduced. On the other hand, anemia figures in the Andean region were not affected, remaining at a similar value as in 2019. Therefore, the hypothesis supported is whether policies have been based on scientific evidence, given that despite the great efforts of multimicronutrient supplementation interventions, prevalences did not decrease. The present analysis is based on the formulations of the misdiagnosis of t...

The rapid global spread of a new coronavirus initially named 2019-nCoV, detected in the city of Wuhan, China, now known as SARS-CoV-2, has posed new challenges for epidemiological surveillance. At the same time, the alarming growth of the pandemic makes it necessary to know and implement reliable diagnostic methods to detect and adequately treat patients. To this end, the most commonly used methods for diagnosis are: the immunochromatographic (IC) technique, which includes both antibody detection tests and antigen detection tests; and molecular diagnostic tests based on PCR technology, detecting virus quantitatively and qualitatively, such as qRT-PCR and LAMP, respectively. In the present review, we compare the diagnostic utility of LAMP, PCR and IC tests applied to the diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2, and how the different virus variants has impacted on its reliability. The necessary informatio...

The diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is key for the initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Viral load (VL) values and other immunological components are essential for the follow-up and prognosis of people with HIV. The aim of the study was to evaluate patients with a confirmatory diagnosis of HIV residing in the Callao region. Prospective study, in which 289 adult residents of the Callao region were evaluated, confirmatory and post ART treatment measurements were performed. For the difference of means, Student’s T-test for paired samples was calculated, considering p<0.05 as statistical significant. People who received ART showed a significant decrease in VL values and an increase in CD4+. There have been a successful disease management and control of the HIV-infected population in Callao.

Objective: To determine the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 vaccination dimensions and COVID-19 death rates in the Callao region. Methods: A cross-sectional study based on the Ministry of Health databases was carried out. A total of 44,867 records from the Callao region were analyzed for the period 2021 to 2022. To assess the association of interest, logistic regression models were constructed, reporting crude odds ratios (cOR) and adjusted odds ratios (aOR). Results: The logistic regression models showed that vaccination had a protective effect against death from COVID-19, with an aOR of 0.19 (p<0.001) after controlling for sex, age, hospitalization, ICU admission, and pandemic wave, compared to the reference group (unvaccinated). Conclusions: Vaccination provides a monotonic protective effect against death from COVID-19 in the Región Callao.

Anemia during pregnancy is considered a public health problem, due to the alarmingprevalence worldwide. The measure chosen by various governments is massive ironsupplements. However, there is currently contradictory evidence on iron intake, excess consumption, and potential risks during pregnancy for both the motherand child. For gestation, an additional 1 gram of iron is required for the mother, fetus, placenta, and delivery. This generates an increase in red mass of 20% but toavoid hemoconcentration the plasma volume expands by almost 50% generating aphysiological hemodilution. For pregnant women, no criteria have been establishedto differentiate iron deficiency anemia and physiological anemia due to the normalprocess of hemodilution. In the case of Peru and countries with high altitude residentpopulation, there is an additional problem, the hemoglobin correction factor forhigh altitude ...

Petroleum consists mainly of hydrocarbons and metals, in varying concentrations. It is highly flammable and throughout history has been used as a fuel and energy source. Oil spills are disasters that alter different ecological levels and affect different sectors, mainly the environment, health, the economy and tourism. Several studies have shown both short and long-term effects on human health, especially at the reproductive, cardio-respiratory, hepatic, hepatic, renal, metabolic and mental levels. Exposure occurs by ingestion, absorption through intact skin and inhalation. In Peru, on 15 January 2022, an oil spill in Ventanilla, Callao, of about 12,000 barrels of oil generated harmful effects on marine and ornithological species and on the quality of life of artisanal fishermen. Its impact is still under evaluation due to the slow response of those responsible for slowing down the advan...

For over 60 years the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended iron supplementation for vulnerable populations in low- and middle-income countries due to the high prevalence of anemia. Despite these measures, childhood anemia remains a serious public health issue. Governments have implemented policies such as iron supplementation and food fortification, but the results have been limited. Advances in the understanding of iron physiology—particularly regarding regulatory hormones and the risks associated with excessive intake—have led to a rethinking of current approaches. In 2024, the WHO updated the hemoglobin thresholds for defining anemia, which has changed the global landscape. In Peru, this revision reduced the prevalence of anemia in children aged 6 to 35 months to 35,3%, meaning it is no longer considered a severe public health problem. This calls for a reassessment of t...
