Medical emigration is a really important problem for Peru in order to consolidate a sustainable health system. Objectives: To determine the prevalence of emigration intention and associated factors according to gender in recently Peruvian graduated physicians. Design and setting: Cross-sectional, analytic study developed in Lima, Peru in 2010. Participants: Two hundred eightynine recently graduated physicians from Peruvian universities were included. Interventions: An anonymous and auto-administered questionnaire was handed to the study subjects to measure their intention to work abroad. Data was analyzed using the statistical package STATA 11.2, and a log-binomial generalized lineal model was used as regression model for multiple variables. Main outcome measures: Self-reported emigration intention. Results: Prevalence of intended emigration was 42.1%, higher in males (50.0% versus 36.4%...

Background The shortage in Latin-American Primary Care (PC) workforce may be due to negative perceptions about it. These perceptions might be probably influenced by particular features of health systems and academic environments, thus varying between countries. Methods Observational, analytic and cross-sectional multicountry study that evaluated 9,561 first and fifth-year medical students from 63 medical schools of 11 Latin American countries through a survey. Perceptions on PC work was evaluated through a previously validated scale. Tertiles of the scores were created in order to compare the different countries. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios were calculated using simple and multiple Poisson regression with robust variance. Results Approximately 53% of subjects were female; mean age was 20.4±2.9 years; 35.5%were fifth-year students. Statistically significant differences were foun...

Objectives. To evaluate the frequency of publication and its associated factors by professors of scientific research in medical schools in Peru. Materials and methods. This was a cross-sectional study. We included all teachers of research courses from the 32 medical schools in Peru in 2011. The publication search was conducted using Google Scholar, Scopus and Medline. Both the crude and adjusted prevalence ratios (aPR) were calculated with confidence intervals at 95% using simple and multiple Poisson regression with robust variance. Results. Of the 201 university teachers, 43.8% had never published an article in a journal, 26.9% had an original article published in a journal indexed in Medline and 16.4% did so in the past two years. Only 3% had been corresponding authors in non-Peruvian, indexed journals Factors associated with having an original article published in Medline in the past ...

Although often viewed as an action of last resort, going on strike remains a legal and often effective option for physicians seeking labor improvements and better working conditions. Indeed, in some countries, there have been reports of strikes by physicians 1 2, followed by ensuing discussions of potential ethical implications 3–5. However, little has been said about the consequences of such a mass labor stoppage on undergraduate medical education – and those students who aspire to the profession. In Peru, physicians from the Peruvian National Social Insurance (EsSalud) went on a 33-day strike (August 7 to September 8), effectively limiting medical services to only emergency and critical care units. Furthermore, per EsSalud's labor guidelines (prepared for purposes of the strike), all academic activity within affiliated teaching hospitals was explicitly forbidden during the strike.

Breast cancer (BC) screening could reduce its mortality; however, its access is influenced by societal forces. Our objective is to identify the social determinants associated with mammography screening (MS) in women aged 50 to 59 in Peru. In this cross-sectional analysis of the Peruvian Demographic Health Survey, 2015, MS within the past two years was evaluated through self-report. Prevalence for MS was 21.9% [95% CI: 18.9 to 25.1]. The average age was 54 years (s.d.: 2.5). The higher the socioeconomic status, the higher the prevalence of screening (3.2% vs 41.4% in extreme quintiles, p <.001). In the adjusted models, higher socioeconomic status (PR: 5.81, 95% CI: 2.28 to 14.79), higher education level (PR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.30 a 3,15) and having health insurance from the Ministry of Health (PR: 2.21, 95% CI: 1.28 to 3.82) and EsSalud (PR: 4.37, 95% CI: 2.67 to 7.15), were positively assoc...

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) has proven to be highly beneficial for children’s health. Identifying the associated factors with its cessation is useful in order to target specific groups for preventive interventions. Objective: To evaluate the associated factors with EBF cessation before six months of age in women with infants, living in a district in Lima. Methods: A cross-sectional analytic study was performed. It evaluated mothers with infants aged 6-24 months, in a periurban district in Lima, Peru, 2013. The study outcome was cessation in EBF before six months of age. Sociodemographic variables, factors related to gestation and delivery, and factors properly related to breastfeeding were assessed. Crude and adjusted prevalence ratios and their respective 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) were calculated through simple and multiple Poisson regression. Results: From the 10...

Objetives. The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between the time of outsourced work and the development of pneumoconiosis in Peruvian miners who attended the "Centro Nacional de Salud Ocupacional y Protección al Ambiente para la Salud" between 2008 and 2011. Materials and methods. Retrospective case-control study. Cases were defined as workers diagnosed of pneumoconiosis under standardized criteria. Outsourced work was defined as the time (in months) of work in a company that does not own the primary mining project. The project owner company was registered in the Mining Companies Directory (Ministerio de Energía y Minas). We used multiple logistic regression with crude and adjusted ORs. Results. The study comprised 391 cases and 1519 controls. In both groups, most of the study subjects had a level of education lower than complete high school and were born and currently ...

Introduction: Health professionals performing their social health service (SHS) in rural communities could be at risk of developing depression. Moreover, those who migrate from farther places to perform their SHS could have an increased risk. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between place of origin and the presence of depressive symptoms, in health professionals performing rural social health service (SHS) in Ancash, Peru. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. During April 2015, a survey was applied to health professionals performing SHS in the Peruvian Ministry of Health (MINSA) facilities in Ancash. The main outcome was the presence of depressive symptoms, defined as a score ≥2 points in the Patient Health Questionnaire-2. The main exposure was the place of origin, defined as the place where the subjects completed their undergraduate professional studi...
