A total of 4701 canine protocols, processed at the Laboratory of Histopathology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the National University of San Marcos (Lima) during the period 2003-2014 were evaluated to determine the frequency of types of cancer diagnosed by histopathology and in the case of the transmissible venereal tumor (TVT) by cytology. There were 3480 cases of neoplasms, of which 554 (11.8%) belonged to canines from 0 to 5 years of age. The 4-5 years old dogs (261 cases, 47.1%) and the male dogs (333 cases, 60.1%) had the highest number of neoplasms. The benign neoplasms predominated with 279 cases (50.4%), with TVT being the most frequent neoplasia of this group and of the general count with 94 cases (33.7%). The most frequent malignant neoplasm was rhabdomyosarcoma, with 47 cases (17.1%).

This study evaluated the protection conferred by a vaccine against Gumboro disease in laying hens. Three hundred Isa Brown one-day-old chicks were equally distributed in three groups. Groups A and B were vaccinated, twice, at 9 and 24 days old with an intermediate-intermediate strain (2512), and group C remained unvaccinated. Groups B and C were challenged at 32 days old with the F52/70 strain through the eye. Bursal index, bursa/spleen relationship and microscopic lesions of the bursa, spleen and thymus after vaccination were evaluated at 1, 35 and 45 days old. Antibody titers by an indirect ELISA study but not in birds of groups A and B. The bursal index values in the three groups were compatible with bursal atrophy. Histopathological lesions were severe in the three groups. At 45 days of age, birds of group C had the major seroconvertion (3997), while groups A and B presented similar ...

The aim of the study was to evaluate an immunohistochemical technique for the diagnosis of canine mixed mammary tumors (CMMT) using anti-cytokeratin AE1/AE3 and anti-vimentin monoclonal antibodies that are routinely used in the diagnosis of human mammary tumors. Twenty paraffin tissue blocks of canine mixed mammary tumors, previously diagnosed by hematoxilin-eosin (HE) histopathology were used. Three slides sets, 4 μm thick, were obtained per viability of the tissue, and the other two were used for the immunohistochemistry through the Streptavidin-Biotin-labeled method. Epithelial cells positively reacted against the anti-cytokeratin AE1/AE3 showing a brown colour at the cytoplasma level. Fibroblasts, connective tissue, myoepithelial cells, cartilage cells and bone areas showed a brown colour against the anti-vimentin antibody. All benign tumors reacted positively to both antibodies, wh...

Canine histopathological records from de Pathology Laboratory of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Lima, during the period of 1995-2006 were evaluated for determining the frequency of neoplasias in relation to sex, age, breed, cellular origin, and localization. Out of 4438 canine records, 1092 corresponded to neoplasia (24.6%). Higher tumoral frequency was found in age groups of 5 to <9 (37.1%) and ≥9 (35.6%) years old. None differences were found due to sex, but the Boxer breed was the most affected (12.1%). Malignant neoplasias were most frequent (64.9%) than benign ones, where the transmissible venereal tumor was the most frequent benign tumor and the mammary adenocarcinoma was the most frequent malign tumor. Skin and subcutaneous tissue (39.5%) and mammary gland (16.7%) were the most common sites for neoplasias.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and type of prostate disorders in canines through the use of ultrasound and cytology techniques. A total of 62 noncastrated dogs that were patients of the Small Animals Clinic of the Veterinary Faculty of San Marcos University, Lima were used. The ultrasound examination was conducted followed by the ultrasound-guided prostatic aspiration technique. The smears were stained and the cell recognition was done. The effect of age, size, breed and clinical signs on the clinical disorder was evaluated. The results showed that 40 animals (64.5%) had a prostate disorder with any of the two tests. The ultrasound technique showed cysts or abscesses (4.8%), hyperplasia (32.3%), hyperplasia and prostatitis (20.9%), prostatitis (4.8%) and neoplasias (1.6%); while through cytology was found glandular hyperplasia (32.3%), hyperplasia associated to infl...

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency of canine rhabdomyosarcoma based on its histopathological classification, that were diagnosed in the histopathology laboratory of the Veterinary Faculty of San Marcos University, Lima, Peru in the period of January 2000 to December 2008. A total of 63 cases of canine rhabdomyosarcoma were diagnosed out of 1125 canine neoplasic tumors (5.6 ± 1.3%). Among this, only 47 cases were possible to classify where 27 cases (57.4%) corresponded to embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, 19 (40.4%) to alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, and one case (2.1%) to pleomorphic rhabdomyosarcoma. The most frequent region of the body affected by the embryonal type was the head and neck, where 6 to 10 year-old animals were the most affected.
