The promotion of organic and ecological production seeks the sustainable and competitive growth of organic crops in countries like Peru. In this context, agro-exportation is characterized by-products such as fruit and vegetables where they need to comply with organic certification regulations to enter products into countries like the US, where it is necessary to certify that weed control is carried out using biodegradable materials, flames, heat, media electric or manual weeding, this being a problem for some productive organizations. The problem is related to the need to differentiate between the crop and the weed as described above, by having image recognition technology tools with Deep Learning. Therefore, the objective of this article is to demonstrate how an artificial intelligence model based on computer vision can contribute to the identification of weeds in basil plots. An iterat...

The introduction of artificial intelligence methods and techniques in the construction industry has fostered innovation and constant improvement in the automation of monitoring and control processes at construction sites, although there are areas where more studies still need to be conducted. This paper proposes a method to determine the criticality of cracks in concrete samples. The proposed method uses a previously trained YOLOv4 neural network to identify concrete cracks. Then, the region of interest, determined by the bounding box resulting from the neural network model classification, is extracted. Finally, the extracted image is converted to negative grayscale to quantify the number of white pixels above a certain threshold, automatically allowing the system to characterize the fracture’s extent and criticality. The classification module reached a veracity between 98.36% and 99.7...

The quality of chilli is prime concern for farmers, traders and chilli processing industries. The effective determination of chilli dryness and ripening stages are important factors in determining its quality and chilli shelf life with respect to manual estimation of ripening/dryness that are complex and time consuming. Chilli dryness and ripeness prediction at post-harvest stage by non-destructive machine vision technologies have potential of fair valuation for chilli produce for the chilli stalk holders. Chilli pericarp color values calculated from RGB, HSV and CIE-L*a*b* color space, texture properties using edge-wrinkles parameters are described by histogram of oriented gradients (HOG). LDA(linear discriminant analysis), RF(random-forest) and SVM(support vector machine) classifiers are analysed for performance accuracy for chilli dryness identification and chilli ripening stages usin...

The learning process in training children with visual impairments and low vision requires the use of new devices that integrate image recognition and feedback on stimulation sequences with the senses of tactile and auditory responses into their design. Eighteen students with visual impairments (blind or low vision) between the ages of eight and twelve, who attend a school specialized in teaching children with visual impairments, completed three numerical stimulation routines. The software developed evaluates skills of addition and subtraction, identification of geometric shapes, and mental calculations to achieve a goal. The results of the test showed that the students performed better in the game dynamic than in the addition and subtraction routines. This study is a contribution to designing software for low-cost devices as it has been verified that this type of application works on bot...

Computer vision is one of the fields of Artificial Intelligence that is flourishing because it focuses on the development and improvement of techniques that allow computers to identify, process and classify images, in a way that resembles human vision. This feature makes them an excellent tool for vehicle control systems. For this reason, we developed a system for the recognition of Mexico City license plates using artificial vision techniques, image processing and automatic learning, in order to monitor and speed up response times, when a stolen vehicle is found.

The study of artificial learning processes in the area of computer vision context has mainly focused on achieving a fixed output target rather than on identifying the underlying processes as a means to develop solutions capable of performing as good as or better than the human brain. This work reviews the well-known segmentation efforts in computer vision. However, our primary focus is on the quantitative evaluation of the amount of contextual information provided to the neural network. In particular, the information used to mimic the tacit information that a human is capable of using, like a sense of unambiguous order and the capability of improving its estimation by complementing already learned information. Our results show that, after a set of pre and post-processing methods applied to both the training data and the neural network architecture, the predictions made were drastically c...

Potato is economically important in Peru, which is the first potato producer in Latin America, however, the quality of native potatoes need to be improved to increment their consumption. An automatic classification process to detect potato defects is important within the entire production chain to guarantee the high quality of the product. In the present research, a Convolutional Neural Network is used to detect defects in the Huayro potato surface. This is an Andean potato originally from Peru and is special because it has very marked eyes that can complicate the differentiation from pests that leaves holes in the potato. An adaptive learning was proposed in the work, where the principal idea is to evaluate continuously the learning of the neural network to adapt the training process (in this case the training data) to increment the learning performance. The detection results were aroun...

Road damage, such as potholes and cracks, represent a constant nuisance to drivers as they could potentially cause accidents and damages. Current pothole detection in Peru, is mostly manually operated and hardly ever use image processing technology. To combat this we propose a mobile application capable of real-time road damage detection and spatial mapping across a city. Three models are going to be trained and evaluated (Yolov5, Yolov8 and MobileNet v2) on a novel dataset which contains images from Lima, Peru. Meanwhile, the viability of crack detection through bounding box method will be put to the test, each model will be trained once with cracks annotations and without. The YOLOv5 model was the one with the best results, as it showed the best mAP50 across all of out experiments. It got 99.0% and 98.3% mAP50 with the dataset without crack and with crack annotations, correspondingly..

Object recognition in videos is one of the main challenges in computer vision. Several methods have been proposed to achieve this task, such as background subtraction, temporal differencing, optical flow, particle filtering among others. Since the introduction of Convolutonal Neural Networks (CNN) for object detection in the Imagenet Large Scale Visual Recognition Competition (ILSVRC), its use for image detection and classification has increased, becoming the state-of-the-art for such task, being Faster R-CNN the preferred model in the latest ILSVRC challenges. Moreover, the Faster R-CNN model, with minimum modifications, has been succesfully used to detect and classify objects (either static or dynamic) in video sequences; in such setup, the frames of the video are input “as is” i.e. without any pre-processing. In this thesis work we propose to use Robust PCA (RPCA, a.k.a. Principal...

This project focuses on developing an NLP-based text analysis tool to evaluate Android app user feedback, specifically collected from F-Droid. The lack of an automated solution to analyze and understand these opinions, classifying them into specific topics, motivates research. The goal is to provide developers, users, and data analysts with a detailed view of user preferences and perceptions. Using data sets in English between 2014 and 2017, the proposal is implemented in Python with the Pandas library. The BERT model is used for classification, with a specific focus on the comparison of different models. The graphical interface is built in Visual Studio, allowing users to enter comments and obtain topic rankings, along with word cloud visualizations.
