Compressive strength and elasticity modulus are the main mechanical properties of concrete. The non-destructive ultrasound pulse test can be used to determine these properties without compromising the structure’s integrity. This study seeks to assess whether a correlation exists (1) between the Reinforcement Index (RI) and the mechanical properties, (2) between the RI and the dynamic properties, and (3) among the dynamic properties of polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete. The RI was modified through fiber volume fraction (0, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.2%) and fiber length (40, 50 and 60 mm). The dynamic properties were assessed through dynamic elasticity modulus and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV), which were determined by direct, semi-direct, and indirect prospect methods. Finally, compressive strength, static elasticity modulus, and Poisson’s ratio were assessed through destructive tests. T...

The construction industry requires concrete with adequate post-cracking behavior for applications such as tunnels, bridges, and pavements. For this reason, polypropylene macrofibers are used, which are synthetic fibers that fulfill the function of providing residual strength to concrete. In this study, an experimental plan is carried out to evaluate the bending behavior of concrete reinforced with polypropylene fibers using the four-point bending test according to ASTM C1609. Three fiber dosages (3.6, 7.2 and 10.8 kg/m3) and three fiber lengths (40, 50, and 60 mm) were used. The use of macro polypropylene fibers increased the post-cracking behavior of concrete. In addition, based on the experimentally obtained results and available literature data, a multivariable equation was developed to predict the concrete toughness as a function of the volume, slenderness, and modulus of elasticity ...

The use of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) platforms and photogrammetry in bathymetric surveys has been established as a technological advancement that allows these activities to be conducted safely, more affordably, and at higher accuracy levels. This study evaluates the error levels obtained in photogrammetric UAV flights, with measurements obtained in surveys carried out in a controlled water body (pool) at different depths. We assessed the relationship between turbidity and luminosity factors and how this might affect the calculation of bathymetric survey errors using photogrammetry at different shallow-water depths. The results revealed that the highest luminosity generated the lowest error up to a depth of 0.97 m. Furthermore, after assessing the variations in turbidity, the following two situations were observed: (1) at shallower depths (not exceeding 0.49 m), increased turbidity le...

A manually classified dataset of images obtained by four static cameras located around a construction site is presented. Eight object classes, typically found in a construction environment, were considered. The dataset consists of 1046 images selected from video footage by a frame extraction algorithm and txt files containing the objects' class and coordinates information. These data can be used to develop computer vision techniques in the engineering and construction fields.

Dropout has always been a concerning issue within higher education. This research explores the relationship between mental health-related problems and undergraduate students’ dropout rates amid the COVID-19 pandemic and within a civil engineering program. The study is quantitative descriptive, with a non-experimental and longitudinal design. Results show that the dropout rates of civil engineering students from a private university have increased, comparing before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to mental health-related problems. Three strong tendencies within these rates have been detected, directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was concluded that undergraduate students’ mental health had been undermined due to the pandemics, which has had an immediate impact on the increase of dropout rates.

An experimental study was conducted to examine the mechanical strengths of concretes with straight high-strength knurled polypropylene macrofibers. Incidences of concrete mechanical strengths were determined for three different fiber dosages and lengths. In addition, compressive, indirect-splitting-test tensile, and flexural strengths were determined through testing. The results showed no statistically significant correlation between the volume and length of fibers with the compressive strength of polypropylene fiber-reinforced concrete (PPFRC). However, there was a statistically significant correlation between the split tensile strength, the volume, and the length of the fibers when the volume was greater than 0.80%, and the length of the fibers was greater than 50 mm. Furthermore, the modulus of rupture increased when the volume of fibers was greater than 0.80% and the length of the fi...

The combination of light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platforms have garnered considerable interest in recent years because of the wide range of applications performed through the generation of point clouds, such as surveying, building layouts and infrastructure inspection. The attributed benefits include a shorter execution time and higher accuracy when surveying and georeferencing infrastructure and building projects. This study seeks to develop, integrate and use a LiDAR sensor system implemented in a UAV to collect topography data and propose a procedure for obtaining a georeferenced point cloud that can be configured according to the user’s needs. A structure was designed and built to mount the LiDAR system components to the UAV. Survey tests were performed to determine the system’s accuracy. An open-source ROS package was used to acqui...

This study addresses the gap in research on large-scale high-performance concrete (HPC) structures that exhibit self-compacting characteristics and high compressive strength through a detailed case study. It examines the temperature evolution due to hydration heat in a significant HPC structure consisting of an L-shaped reaction slab and wall arrangement. It is heavily reinforced and constructed for a structural laboratory in Lima, Peru. The investigation involved comprehensive instrumentation of the laboratory's reaction slab and wall to assess the impact of boundary conditions on temperature dynamics. Utilizing fifteen thermocouples, temperatures were monitored at various depths, and their progression over time was analyzed. Findings revealed that the peak temperatures reached 78.3°C in the slab and 74.6°C in the wall. Notably, the timing of formwork removal played a critical role ...

Learning-centered models, which rely on active methodologies such as Project-Based Learning (PBL), should be adopted in undergraduate programs to potentiate the development of collaboration skills within future industry professionals like civil engineers. Thus, this study reports the implementation of PBL in two successive Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) courses from an undergraduate civil engineering program: 1) VDC I, in which the VDC methodology implementation was applied theoretically in an already-built project, and 2) VDC II, in which the VDC methodology implementation was applied in a currently-under-construction project. The study's objective is to identify students' perceptions of PBL influence on their learning experience, degree of acquisition of generic competencies, and project development under the VDC methodology. To assess the PBL and VDC implementation, a survey wa...
