Dropout has always been a concerning issue within higher education. This research explores the relationship between mental health-related problems and undergraduate students’ dropout rates amid the COVID-19 pandemic and within a civil engineering program. The study is quantitative descriptive, with a non-experimental and longitudinal design. Results show that the dropout rates of civil engineering students from a private university have increased, comparing before and after the COVID-19 pandemic, primarily due to mental health-related problems. Three strong tendencies within these rates have been detected, directly related to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was concluded that undergraduate students’ mental health had been undermined due to the pandemics, which has had an immediate impact on the increase of dropout rates.

This case study explores the use of online learning environments as an alternative tool for the promotion of undergraduate research culture within an engineering program during the COVID-19 pandemic times. This context entailed the transition from face-to-face to online learning environments, which was taken as an opportunity for the diffusion and socialization of outstanding research projects developed by undergraduate students within the classroom, through the launching of an online event and a virtual permanent exhibition. The results of this case study were measured through quantitative indicators related to the number of research projects submitted by the students for participating in this exhibition, the number of courses participating through these projects, and the number of professors involved. Participation of students and professors increased by 85% and 90%, respectively, comp...

Undergraduate programs face the permanent challenge of constantly transforming to keep an up-to-date curriculum according to globalization and internationalization processes. In the case of civil engineers, professional training should respond to the needs of the Architecture, Engineering, Construction, and Operation (AECO) industry. In this context, Building Information Modelling (BIM) constitutes a process involving shared digital representations of built assets to facilitate design, construction, and operations processes within the industry to form a reliable base for decision-making. The present research develops a methodology and a proposal to embed BIM in an undergraduate civil engineering competency-based curriculum. Mixed method research was applied with a descriptive approach and a concurrent design. The results show that it is possible to implement a curricular design to embed ...

Research training stands out as a means to develop generic competencies, potentiate lifelong learning (LL), and integrate initiatives for compliance with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), contributing to the development of a resilient society. Therefore, the constant promotion of a research culture within higher education institutions is an essential task for reducing the gap between scientific productivity and industry challenges and proposing solutions to real-life challenges. One of the main stages involved in any research process is the proposition of a methodological design: a detailed plan conceived and later developed to answer the research questions. Nevertheless, within the engineering context, even though a wide range of methodological designs are considered, these are not always explicitly stated in research papers, so at the undergraduate level there is an absence ...

Learning-centered models, which rely on active methodologies such as Project-Based Learning (PBL), should be adopted in undergraduate programs to potentiate the development of collaboration skills within future industry professionals like civil engineers. Thus, this study reports the implementation of PBL in two successive Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) courses from an undergraduate civil engineering program: 1) VDC I, in which the VDC methodology implementation was applied theoretically in an already-built project, and 2) VDC II, in which the VDC methodology implementation was applied in a currently-under-construction project. The study's objective is to identify students' perceptions of PBL influence on their learning experience, degree of acquisition of generic competencies, and project development under the VDC methodology. To assess the PBL and VDC implementation, a survey wa...
