The construction of the Colón Theater meant a contribution to the urban evolution of Lima, quickly becoming an important public space for social interaction since its inauguration in 1914. The diffusion of national and international theatrical performances and films took place in its crowded interior with an audience from all social sectors. In its evolution during the 20th century, the Colón reflected, like the rest of Lima’s theaters, architectural progress. The reconstruction carried out in 1941 was no coincidence, to be in keeping with the avant-garde and the harmony of the urban environment where it was located. Through unpublished sources, this article focuses on revealing how was the link that maintained this historical monument as a public space in Lima in the last century with urban progress, until the moment when it began to lose significance and fall into oblivion.

Many of those large areas known as “part of the city” have not reached the minimum conditions to develop a sustainable ecosystem, that is, they lack a fundamental characteristic for the coexistence of their citizens: urbanity. Under these conditions, it is essential to identify the problems and turn them into opportunities for the transformation and improvement of the city as a space for citizen coexistence. Faced with this situation, urbanity is the key to achieving social equity, as well as mobility, and public space constitutes the elementary infrastructural tool to trace the path to egalitarian and inclusive development.

The objective is to highlight how theatrical architecture emerges from the interaction between text, actors, and audience. The article addresses key concepts, such as the active participation of the audience in ancient Greek theater and the entertainment-oriented approach of Roman theater.

Combine painting and architecture is a principle that artists of the first half of the 20th century considered fundamental to their approach to a unitary project. This article analyzes the pictorial works, in connection with their environment, inside the former Peruvian Ministry of Public Education building made between 1951 and 1956 by the architect Enrique Seoane Ros. The objective is to know the type of link between these creations and the space that contains it. For this purpose, we have applied the historical-critical method based on publications and visits to the referred place. The conclusions are related to the idea that the murals are integrated into modern thought, under artistic-political convergences and influences of the Bauhaus ideology, Le Corbusier’s theories and what Siqueiros called “Integral Plastic”. Finally, we find that these paintings qualify their architectu...

One major contribution of the Metropolitan Lima Urban Development Plan 2035 (PLAM2035) to the history of planning is its innovative strategy to integrate the city’s open spaces and archaeological heritage within a network of green corridors for the enjoyment of the community. Most of Lima’s architectural heritage is located in the periphery of the metropolis, linked to river valleys and mountains, sites that have been converted into landfills or wastelands threatened by informal urbanisation. However, these places foster the potential to become ecological and cultural assets that help in connecting the metropolitan ecosystems with Andean heritage, to promote the protection of archaeological sites, tourism, national and international research activities, and community integration. This study seeks to analyse the PLAM2035’s proposal regarding the integration between the System of Ope...

In this article, I study the effect of aging of neighbors on local organizations in San Felipe, a middle-class neighborhood in Lima, Peru. I elaborate on this effect by using the case of the control of public space in the neighborhood. I conducted participant observation during a year. During that year, I observed the dynamics of local organizations’ meetings; I interviewed 46 residents of different characteristics; and I observed a large amount of situations andcontroversies among actors in San Felipe’s public space. I find that senior residents are the ones who impose their point of view about the neighborhood’s fortune. This result is surprising considering that senior residents are neither the most numerous group in the neighborhood, neither the one with higher resources. I claim that that happens because senior residents transform time (a scarce resource for young-adult neighb...
