The central granular cell odontogenic tumor (CGCOT) is a rarely seen neoplasm of odontogenic origin with a predilection for mandible of middle aged women. The lesion shows slow growing and radiographic feature of a radiolucent unilocular lesion with a radiopaque border. The present study aims to report a new case of CGCOT with an atypical involvement of anterior maxilla. Clinical exam showed swelling of the hard palate and the vestibular area of left canine and pre-molar of maxilla. Cone beam computed tomography showed a hypodense unilocular well delimited lesion extending from central left incisive to left pre-molar region. Histopathological analysis showed granular eosinophilic cells and islands of odontogenic epithelium and positive immunostaining for CK14, vimentin, CD68, Ki67 and S-100, which established the diagnosis of CGCOT. The patient is under follow-up without recurrence for s...

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign intraosseous lesion of the jaws. Traditionally, surgery is the most used treatment for this type of pathology, however, in recent years the use of intralesional corticosteroids injections has been proposed as a conservative alternative. The aim of this study is to carry out a bibliographic review of the cases treated with corticosteroids. The author used PubMed and Google Scholar platforms were used to search for articles published between 1994 and 2020, related to CGCG and its treatment with corticosteroids. The results of this research were 28 articles and one abstract were found with 61 patients in total; in most cases, weekly intralesional injections of triamcinolone acetonide with anesthetic were used for 6 weeks, although protocol variants were reported. Of the 61 cases, 38 had complete resolution while the other cases required additi...

Non-Hodgkin lymphomas make up a group of malignant neoplasms of lymphoid origin, according to their corresponding cell line, as B or T cell lymphomas classified. Mostly, these entities come from B lymphocytes, being the most frequent diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). In the oral cavity, non-Hodgkin lymphomas have low incidence and their prognosis, clinical evolution and response to treatments, depend on the subtype presented. These malignancies can develop in soft tissues of the oral cavity or centrally in the jaws. We report an 80-year-old patient with an injury corresponding to large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the oral cavity, who has been treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, responding favorably to treatment. Likewise, in order to describe this infrequent type of lesions of the oral cavity and to assess the prognosis they have, a literature review was performed. It is ...

Posteri...

Primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) constitutes 2% of extranodal lymphomas and 0,3%-1,5% of all intracranial neoplasms in immunocompetent patients, being more frequent after the sixth decade of life. We report a case of a 76 year-old man with no antecedents who started his disease with march instability, difficulty to move left side of his body with brachial predominance, holocraneal headache and dizziness. He arrived at emergency with Glasgow 14 and right eyelid ptosis. He had left sided hemiparesis and hypoesthesia with crural predominance and occasional disorientation. Brain computed tomography (CT) showed a contrastenhanced image in the right frontoparietal region with both extra- and intra-cranial components, cerebral edema and middle line deviation. Craniotomy and biopsy of the tumor resulted in diffuse large B cell lymphoma of the central nervous system. The patient wa...

Background: Actinomycosis is an unusual chronic bacterial infection, even rarer in people living with HIV. It is not considered an AIDS-defining disease. However, the role in co-presentation or overlap with other opportunistic conditions of advanced HIV is unknown. Case presentation: A 49-year-old Peruvian male presented with a 4-month history of dysphagia, odynophagia, hyporexia and wasting. He underwent an upper digestive endoscopy, in which ulcers with a necrotic center were observed, therefore, the initial diagnostic assumption was esophageal cancer. Subsequent pathology report excluded neoplasms and confirmed the diagnosis of actinomycosis. Serology for human immunodeficiency virus was requested, yielding a positive result. Antimicrobial treatment with amoxicillin and antiretroviral therapy were indicated, with slow clinical improvement. After 4 months, epigastric discomfort present...

Since 1978, clinical uses within the central nervous system have been found for omentum tissue, particularly in patients with ischemic conditions and/or ischemic penumbra. Omental tissue, one form of white adipose tissue (WAT), has some features that distinguish it from other WAT depots in other areas of the body. It is the best adipose tissue for developing vascular connections with surrounding tissue, and through these newly formed arterial blood vessels, nervous parenchyma may receive nutrients, oxygen, neurotransmitters, neurotrophic factors and stem cells. Moreover, the amount of adherent scar tissue in the omentalnervous system interface is minimal.

The case of a 20-year-old male patient is presented, with an illness of one week characterized by asthenia, hyporexia, nausea, vomiting, neck stiffness, intermittent headache of intensity 9/10, fever quantified at 38.5. °C, scant dry cough, weight loss and left hemiparesis without loss of consciousness. Serological tests, including HIV, were negative. The spinal fluid showed pleocytosis with a predominance of mononuclear cells, hyperproteinorrachia and hypoglycorrhachia, with a positive GeneXpert MTB/RIF test for M. tuberculosis resistant to rifampicin, in addition to a positive sputum smear for the same germ. The images showed a miliary pattern and vascular compromise (bilateral hypodensities at the level of the basal ganglia and internal capsule). He was treated as multidrug-resistant systemic tuberculosis with a favorable outcome.

Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is a rare disease that complicates pre-transfusion tests due to the presence of autoantibodies interfering with conventional serological techniques. This increases the risk of alloimmunization and hinders the selection of compatible units, particularly in multi-transfused patients. This article reviews the use of molecular techniques, such as red blood cell genotyping, to improve transfusion safety in AIHA patients. Data sources such as PubMed, Cochrane, Medline, and Scielo were reviewed to identify relevant studies published between 2013 and 2024. Molecular techniques provide faster and more precise typing, overcoming serological interferences, but face challenges like high costs and limited infrastructure in countries like Peru. The centralization of molecular immunohematology laboratories is proposed as a cost effective solution to ensure equitable a...
