The characterization and delimitation of the existing vegetation cover in a given geographic area is of vital importance for an adequate management of natural resources. In this sense, this research proposes a methodology to delimit the types of vegetation cover in the Quillcay sub-basin. The study area is located in the districts of Huaraz and Independencia, province of Huaraz, Ancash; in the middle western slope of the Cordillera Blanca and Santa river basin. The delimitation of the vegetation cover began with the identification of the dominant vegetation cover types (Andean grassland, forest, wetland and shrub thicket); then, the geographic characteristics (slope and altitude) were defined for each type of vegetation cover. Subsequently, layers were generated with the Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) classifier and the calculation of the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI). Finally...

In Peru, work has been carried out in the area of solid mining waste from the mineral flotation process since 2000, where the Ministry of Energy and Mines begins to carry out the inventory of mining environmental liabilities related to abandoned mining activities where it involves acidic waters, dumps, manholes and mining tailings, respectively; coming to the end to prepare the law 28271, law of regulation of the environmental liabilities of the mining activity, promulgated on July 2, 2004. In the Santa river basin the inventory of 153 mining environmental liabilities has been carried out, reaching the conclusion the urgency of conducting research studies to control the alarming contamination of the physical environment in this basin. At the end of the project, it establishes the preliminary technical parameters at the pilot level in relation to the granulometric and mineralogical ...

With the sample of stream sediments in the basin of the river Torres – Vizcarra (Huanuco-Ancash), which have been subjected to the chemical speciation method, it has been possible to define the dispersion process for the main metallic elements. This characterization is define by the relation between the total metal content and the residual content of the sample, giving as a result a factor named relative dispersion, which it has been determined for the main elements, highlighting among them, copper, lead, zinc and cadmium because of its very high mobility, while chromium and vanadium for its low mobility. The application of the sequential extraction technique allows defining the fraction of metallic elements moving in a specific environment, identifying the bioavailable fractions, as well as allows identifying the real environmental impact produced by the dispersion of heavy metals in ...

Water security in Andean watersheds depends on adaptive water management in the face of glaciohydrological and socioeconomic impacts. The Parón sub-basin in the Santa River basin (Ancash, Peru) is a suitable case in this respect. Water is regulated by a floodgate in the Parón lake, which has become a focal point of social conflict. This study analyzes the water balance of this sub-basin using a semi-distributed hydrological model for the present (2006-2016) and future (2030-2050), considering different scenarios of precipitation variation, glacial melting, and increased water demand. Without regulation of the lake, the sub-basin would enter into a strong water deficit in the dry months (June-August). Until 2030 (2050), assuming a maximum regulation of 2.6 m³/s, a 15% (35%) increase in precipitation, and a 10% (26%) decrease in the glacier contribution to the annual flow, water availab...

The Peruvian Amazon faces an increasing threat of soil erosion, driven by unsustainable agricultural practices and accelerated deforestation. In Neshuya (Ucayali region), agricultural activity has intensified since 2014, but the effect on soil erosion is unknown. The present study aimed to evaluate the increase in erosion levels, at a subbasin of the central–eastern Amazon of Peru, in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment. The revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) model was used for assessing the effect of vegetation cover change from 2016 to 2022. In the Neshuya sub-basin (973.4 km2 ), the average erosion increased from 3.87 to 4.55 t ha−1 year−1 , on average. In addition, there is great spatial variability in the values. In addition, 7.65% of the study area (74.52 km2 ) exceeds the soil loss tolerance limit (15 t ha−1 year−1 ). The deforestation rate was 17...

Climate change is projected to increase global temperatures and alter rainfall patterns. In Peru, these changes could adversely affect the central basin of the Huallaga River by increasing pest and disease incidence, evapotranspiration, and water consumption. This basin is one of the country’s main rice-producing regions, where the crop is traditionally cultivated using inefficient practices, such as continuous flood irrigation. This study evaluated the effects of different irrigation management strategies on the growth and yield of rice (Oryza sativa var. INIA 516 LM1-La Union 23), the water footprint as an indicator of water use efficiency, and the incidence of pests and diseases associated with irrigation regimes. Three irrigation treatments were implemented: Traditional flooding T1 (maintenance of a 0.15 m water layer with replenishment every 4 days), Optimized flooding T2 (repleni...

Drought monitoring, including its severity, spacing and duration, becomes an essential tool to establish a drought risk management and mitigation plan. This paper aims to compare the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) with the Standardized Streamflow Index (SSI) in the Chancos sub-basin, Ancash. The statistical evaluation will be done through the analysis of homogeneity and trends of the data set, then for the analysis of the statistical association is included the Pearson correlation coefficient (PCC), root mean square error (RMSE), relative bias (BIAS) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE) to determine the degree of consistency between the drought indices. The study revealed that the characteristics of meteorological and hydrological drought in the study period show similarity of patterns which is indicated by the good correlation coefficient between them. In addition, the best ...

The peripheric and urban expansion area of Huaraz is taking place on the lower part of Anqui River’s Sub Basin, between 3,200 and 3,500 m.a.s.l. These areas were traditionally used to develop agricultural and livestock activities. Nevertheless, because of the economic boom of Huaraz, these areas are being urbanized slowly but constantly. The lower part of the basin is a natural area of fluvioglaciar sedimentation and mass motion (water, mud, and rock avalanches). In the highest parts of the basin the origin of the above mentioned natural process is the glaciar erosion and fusion of the glaciar mass. The incidence of avalanches, which could affect the lower part of the basin is slow. Nevertheless, the chance of having one like in 1941 or 1970 is not to be ruled out because Perú is a highly seismic country.
